Can we have a weekly Eric homily please! I could listen to this guy all day :)
Really interesting to hear him talk about how he approaches his compositions and how he talks about their architecture, particularly how he highlights how creating those foundations (or perhaps restrictions) actually leads to more creativity. Really useful. And the Zimmer quote, "why go with your fifth bad idea when you can go with your first bad idea" is so wise.
I wish @TH-cam had a way to like a video more than once. I found my self to wanting to hit the like button 👍🏼 multiple times, throughout the video.

One thing I LOVE about choir is that it's not about anyone person. Choir is a team sport. It is hard to get it right, but when singing in a choir is done right, it is so worth all the blood sweat and tears! HUGE Eric Whitacre fan! I also find him super inspiring, the fact that he was willing to go out of his comfort zone, and write a song for his professor is such a cool story!
What an absolutely incredible interview in so many ways. He had some amazing takes on a lot of interesting subjects, never mind the pure inspiration from a musical point of view.. This interview will definitely stick with me going forward!

Wonderfully honest interview - the bit on the process of composing particularly was so useful to hear.
What a great person! So likable articulate and charming. Humble genius.
I love when he says he sounds like “I have it all worked out…but it’s really a disaster when it’s happening!”
(As a fine artist, in my case, his creative process is similar to my creative process in painting. And, that a piece potentially can never be finished. And, the time limitations helps him start and finish a work. In my case, I have to frame a painting or I’ll never stop working on it.)
I feel what he feels about the openness and possibility of anything in California, as well. I started my art career in San Francisco fir that same reason.
So great that there are people out there like this.

It is an awesome interview. It is fantastic when a composer starts appreciating own musical work. That is maturity. Thanks for sharing that.
Fantastic interview. I really miss feeling part of something bigger sat at my computer: first felt it playing violin (very badly) in a youth orchestra and later playing in a band when you're really clicking. Must be amazing to be part of a professional choir or orchestra.
It's a delicious irony that the same science whose value is promoted above that of music then underpins the very value of music. The therapeutic power of music is an innate knowledge we all share and is supported by a wealth of scientific evidence.

Anyone else notice the color glitch @19:07? I blinked and it freaked me out LOL.
"I am afraid" may be the opening words of the MD... but ultimately, they describe our own deep seated fear of death... if we get quiet enough to listen to it and stop distracting ourselves endlessly. "I am afraid" must surely have been the words of your friend and his wife many times over the course of the sickness. "I am afraid... of losing you. I am afraid... of being alone. I am afraid... of dying. I am afraid... of what comes next."
Great theme for a composition and one everyone can surely relate to. Because passing through death is the one constant none of us can avoid.
Very very old part of the animal brain - sits on brain stem: fear, breath, voice, muscle movements. Great place for art for trigger....

Huh, reminds me on a piece I've written using MRI noises....some of the last sounds many of us will hear....dark piece, of course.....
I am gigging musician and 3 things move my audiences - rhythm, lyrics the voice. I love my guitars but musicianship seems irrelevant to my audiences....

Non-artists are always fascinated by the mechanics of getting and crafting ideas....but to us it's very mundane. Feels like plumbing or fixing something. Nothing special. Like riding a bike or walking. No need to ever ask if it's any "good" - that's for others to decide, or job is just to get it done, as well as we can. Next?.....
