    Look up Scotty Anderson. He has a lightning fast technique. Similar technique to Emil Ernebro but faster. It uses the thumbpick and index finger for alternate single line picking.

      Thanks, I really dig Emil's stuff so I'll look up Scotty Anderson too. Appreciate you mentioning that, Glenn. Cheers!

    Thanks! I was able to the first bit down pretty well after about 20 minutes of focus. Looking forward to learning the rest. Hardest part for me is getting a clean fret.

      Absolutely. Great player and I love it when he takes off on these runs.

    Hey man I love your channel! It's the best in class by farrrrrrrr. I'm trying to find a style like a guy named Colter Wall, but don't really know what to search to find it. Do you have videos in that style? What would that be called?

    • @BluesGuitarInstitute
      @BluesGuitarInstitute  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the kind words, really appreciate it. I just checked Colter Wall out - hadn't heard of him yet - WOAH!!! I dig it! It sounds to me like old school outlaw country, very johnny cash-ish. You should check out Justine Townes Earle. Guitar-wise it's a lot of thumbpicked alternating bass with brush stroke style strums. I don't have a lesson on this, but one may be in order now that you mention it!

    I'll ask you a question: is it possible to play any kind of music with the thumb pick?

  • @kcole83080
    @kcole83080 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    For me , the bumble bee thumb pick aids greatly in flatpicking. You can change the angle the pick hits the string as the pick part is moveable.

    • @BluesGuitarInstitute
      @BluesGuitarInstitute  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I love the design of those but the actual pick part is a bit too thin for my taste. I should check to see if they make a heavier version. Really dug the mobility of the pick. 👍

    I was fine with just using my thumb but the day I started using this thumbpick, now I can't even play those things that I was comfortable playing. I'm sure should I continue with a thumbpick?

    It find it really hard to do a fast alternate picking on the first 2 frets, specially when including some open string notes, because of the weird knife-shape from the Dunlop thumbpick. For example, I find the lick on the song Red Wing by Chet Atkins (once in major once in minor) really hard to play right despite being the easiest part of the song, because of the open strings.

    how do you upstroke with a thumbpick ?

    • @BluesGuitarInstitute
      @BluesGuitarInstitute  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have to hold the pick in the same way you would a flat pick. The index finger on the underside of the pick gives you enough support to do the upstroke.

    • @pankajjoshi2032
      @pankajjoshi2032 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BluesGuitarInstitute . Sorry. What I mean is; how do you up-strum with a thumb pick? I've tried using it like a flat pick but it's so difficult, and I couldn't even find any video for that. Thank any way for the reply. Cheers!

    • @BluesGuitarInstitute
      @BluesGuitarInstitute  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey no problem. It's really the same as holding a regular pick. The pick part of the thumb pick just needs to be pinched in between your thumb and index finger. Then, strum away. If that doesn't make sense, tell me what you're doing and what's going wrong and we'll go from there. Unfortunately, I don't have a pic or anything to share...

    I agree.... get a bumble bee ...pick

    • @BluesGuitarInstitute
      @BluesGuitarInstitute  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've got one and it's cool, but I'm favoring a modified Dunlop. I like the stiffness and I ground the end down to a nice point and helps me. But yeah, the bumble bees are cool for sure 👍
