We got to watch you revive and use most of the machines, so I appreciate you sharing their next chapter. Aside from being a collector of typewriter experiences, you are an inspiration to the community. Without your motivation and guidance, I would certainly not use my machines as much. Looking forward to the next set of typewriter experiences.

Well done. Initially I was looking for a writing tool. It got out of control for about two years and I became a collector of sorts. But, like you, I was distilling the experience I wanted and which tools I wanted to be loyal to. I divested all but three machines: two SM-9s and an SG-1.

Great video as always! What do I do with my typewriters.... 1) purchase,in need of repair. 2) LEARN! Research, history. Clean and repair. 3) Type... Our home is called by many The JacksonInn. I start my day with a fresh cup of coffee, looking out at our gardens and I start typing what I've named Junk Journaling at the JacksonInn. It's a bit like a conversation with a good listening friend. It releases my ....everything. Each page has a page # and a date. When finished it goes into a folder. I never read them and neither does anyone else. The joy and peace is in the letting go. Probably will be recycled or burned at some point. Sooo you asked. I have 25 or so typewriters., some duplicates. I hope to find good homes for most, hopefully selling, maybe gifting to the right person. You've opened the door to that possibility. God bless, take care, thanks again for videos.

Hello Joe, out of all of the Typewriter Video Series episodes that I've watched thus far, I enjoyed this one as much as any of them. Don't get me wrong, I totally dig learning about all of the various machines that have come into your life at one point or another, watching you pour over each of them in great detail. But I really love the idea that the collector of typewriter experiences is now enabling others to experience typewriting (and by default typewriters) as well. I'm still less than six months into my status as a typewriter enthusiast and the amount of fun and joy that the act of typewriting has brought me to date has far exceeded my expectations. Because of this, the thought of potentially gifting one of my machines to someone else so that they too might come to experience this same joy has already crossed my mind. I've been mulling over potential recipients, and am just trying to think through who would most likely actually make use of the typewriter (as opposed to just sitting it out on display).

Hi Joe, This was very helpful. The collecting and restoring bug is hard to overcome. My wife and I enjoy browsing in antique malls, thrift stores, and eBay, and then there's the feeling you've rescued a typewriter when it's back in working order, but using a typewriter for a week at a time, it'll be well over a year before I get to use the same one again. Food for thought!

You’ve got a heart of gold for spreading the typewriter wealth Joe. I was curious which machines you would end up designating as “keepers” and it seems my guesses were pretty close to what you chose. I was a little surprised you gifted your Olympia SF though. A collector of “typewriter experiences” is an apt description I might borrow for myself. Thanks again for sharing your journey Joe!

Thanks so much for this video, and all the typewriter videos. You are part of the reason that I collect and refurbish old typewriters. The result of this is I acquire typewriters(several). I notice in my part of the world here in suffield Twp. Ohio that the millianial generation seem to love typing. How ironic they are known for lack of work effort and wanting something for nothing, and yet here they are wanting a machine that takes manual labor :). Please keep making typewriter videos. Its nice to know I have a kindred spirit in Albuquerque New Mexico. We have other friends there also. If we ever get to visit them ,I will drop you a line and I could take you for a cup of coffee. Thanks again.

Jay Leno’s Garage is a perfect comparison. That’s how i feel about my collection too. I love the historical aspect of typewriters and learn about it whenever i can but the great thing about typewriters is that you can actually integrate them pretty well into your life. I use my machines all the time to write down my university notes in a coherent form. It just makes the whole process more enjoyable. Restoring typewriters gets me emotionally attached to them though wich makes it rather hard for me to let them go haha

Thanks Joe, from a former New Mexican, I really appreciated your discussion. I have been wanting to cull my typewriter collection and really did not want to sell them. It isn't that I couldn't use the money, but I truly appreciate the solution you suggest in the video ... gifting my machines (except for several keepers :) to those waiting for an experience that only typewriters can give. Thanks again and very best to you Joe!

    Amen,
I use ever machine, I try to save some, but my collection won't go more than 12, I have currently 7, maybe 8 is it will ever ship.
But I don't want so many I can't use them, but I absolutely use all of my machines.
I write between 6 and 10 pages a day, and some days I want that snappy crisp SCM Galaxie Deluxe other days the buttery smooth Hermes 3000, some days I'm unable to leave my bed, so the EP-43, other times I'm out of the house and I'll take with me in a go writer bag my EP-20, when I'm doing a 1 or 2 paged outline I get my '68 Royal Aristocrat Special out, perfect for that.
Some days, Momma said there'd be days like this and when my hands are not up to pushing keys, out comes the Big Gun, my '72 Electra 110.
And there's a few more machines I'd like to have, I may even trade some out over the years. But 12 is a perfect amount for me that to me is within reason of use, too many more than that it would become hard I think to be able to use them and maintain them all.
As it is each of my machines undergo a light cleaning before and after each use, a once a month medium cleaning and then a major 6 month service.
I can't t imagine doing that more that 12 times over. And like you said Joe too many and it becomes what's the point especially if you can't use them all.
If I were to down size.
    I'd probably just keep
    The Hermes 3000
    Galaxie Deluxe
    SCM 110
    EP-43
And Royal Aristocrat Special because my Wife bought it for me and I want to continue to live, lol!
I said to her once I could get rid of the Royal to save room or open up for other acquisitions. The Look I got lol was just lol Thought I was going to need a Young Priest and an Old Priest lol!
As much as I wish I could save them all, I just can't, no one can, but I can certainly help to maintain a select lucky few. That live in a good loving home where there are exercised. ❤

Hi Joe, When I was kid, my DAD, the SUPT. of our 85 family building, acquired a HUGE, heavy solid oak desk which ended up in my room. "So what?" You say. Well, this desk was built around an old, heavy, huge REMINGTON typewriter.
It had a special, hidden compartment on simple swivel joints which tab locked in place when you wanted the typewriter to occupy the space instead of flat desktop.
Sadly, this multifunctional desk was put into our storage room when we moved to another apartment in the building and was neglected and forgotten over time.
Ruined by several floods of the storage room the desk with the REMINGTON typewriter was eventually "junked".
I lament that loss to this day. I've NEVER seen anything like the combo desk I described earlier ever again. To this day I wonder if it had been custom built for the original owner? Anybody ever seen similar? Where? I'd LOVE to have something like it again if I could locate one. Thanks!

I've seen people post pictures of those desks on the Facebook Antique Typewriter Group. They've also adapted other typewriters into them. Very cool.

I’m sorry to revive an old video with comments, but you spoke of your Alberqwerty Club in this video. Do you all have pen pals?
I have over the year watched many of your videos to peruse opinions of potential new additions to my collection and how to investigate their condition through your instructions of basic operating guides.
I thought it would be a fun thing to get a typewriter pen pal. Thanks

I’ve connected with most of my correspondents through signing up to Type Pals. Once you have your login, you can peruse the directory and find postal addresses of others desiring to correspond via typewriter.
