It has a lot to do with privacy. A typewriter can't be hacked unless the person is standing over your shoulder literally looking at what you are typing.
I worked as a typewriter engineer in the early 80s, when these machines are used in high security locations, defence , government etc. the ribbons and platen cannot be removed as in theory the information can be read from them,.. so hacking was an issue...
Typewriters are Cool !! The List and crew did an excellent job filming this segment in my shop here in Phoenix Producer of the segment, Todd, did a great job coordinating the shoot, Teresa couldn't have been nicer. The Revolution will be Typewritten . . . . .
I got a typewriter back in 2001, that one broke down , it took me forever to find another. I end up finding another one in 2015,at a thrift store, that's where I got my first one. Typewriters are awesome, way better than the technology that they want us to use, computers laptops, tablets, phones, don't forget the printer. I think typewriters will never go out of style. My family laughs at me, because I type stories, or writing a letter to someone, I don't use emails. I using my typewriter ,to send a letters or send thank you notes, make out menus, and a food planner. Typewriters will never go out of style, because some of us don't want to go paperless.
I'm a really big fan of vintage things. I just got one from a friend, as a gift. It's an Olivetti Lettera 35. I made adjustments, and it's useful and working again. I got my interest for writing again. I really love this one. Hanks is the best. Indeed, you don't need nothing else when you're a writing lover. Just words, paper and a typewriter. Stay creative, and put out your best words !!!
@@theloniouscoltrane3778 You can buy universal ribbons made to be used with any brand of typewriters, vintage or retro. I've seen the ribbons being sold on Amazon.

I worked with typewriters in early 80s just as the electronic ones came on the market, in our house when ever a typewriter is on a tv show my wife or daughter will say.. what model is that ? I still remember a surprising amout of models.. interesting industry and I ended up in IT and now Cloud security... 42 years of change.
I have three antique typewriters and I can't get any of them to type in caps none of the repairman will tell me because they want me to give them by typewriter because they've become so high in demand I just want to know how to get a brother correct a writer that works perfectly good and mint condition but will not type in capital letters only in lowercase everything else works except that somebody please help I try to reach Tom Hanks but I don't know if he'd read this or not he would be the one to know I'm 93 years old and I just want to know so I can use my old typewriters have somebody trying to buy it from me 😂
Ugh, so this is why I can't find a typewriter. I really need one. Not because I'm a sheep that does whatever is on tick tock but because my handwriting sucks now, and I want to redo my recipes. If history is a reliable indicator, I should be able to get one in a couple of years when the sheep move on to whatever the internet tells them is hip and cool.
1:20 This app defeats the purpose of even having a typewriter. The only good practical reason for a manual/mechanical typewriter, is as a protection against electronic bugging
Pre wordstar days, I would type but I hated using my pinky fingers unlike on a computer keyboard. Recently got a 31 Royal and didn't realize how soft the keys of this one was compared to my Olivetti :)
yes we must revive typewriters bcuz it needs no electricity & u can type any papers inland letters postcards photos on typewriters which is not posible in printers
I bought a Royal Model “A” flat top (1938), for $50, seller said it would never type again. I had it typing in 3 minutes. It needs cleaning, things are sticky, dirt accumulated on the tab rack, that sort of thing. I bought it as a project machine, it’s not as much of a project as I thought it would be. It’s in fair typing condition right now. My 1937 Corona Standard flat top (base model) is in very good typing condition, very clean, decals are nearly mint-$150.
I am a student and typewriter is like fantasy to me.I have always dreamt of owning typewriter and dreamt of making a personal diary using a type writer... If any one who is reading this knows any information about type writers... can you pls suggest me one?
Try to use one of that in your apartment at 3:00 AM. See what happens. Try to copy and paste with that. Insert all that text in a PDF and email it fast to your editor. Tywriter machines are cute, but no serious writer is using it anymore. JK wrote Harry Potter by hand and then she type writed it. Now she is a billionaire and uses a MAC Book air. George RR Martin uses a DOS terminal. Stephen King uses a computer. Ask that people if they want to go back to typewriters.
Well, I bełieve that a Typewriter shoud replace the pen, rather than the computer, and because it is more difficult to write on a Typewriter, I found first drafts are better on it.
Did in the past. To be a published writer you need an agent. No agent will read text by an unknown writer that don't know how to use a computer. A type machine is pretty, cool and all those things but had its inconveniences.@@JB-uv4hm
If you need the tool that manually turns this model I have one, I used to repair them in the early 80s.. the tool is needed when you need to press a key and make the golfball rotate and strike the platen.. I'll post if you want it.
And just coincidentally of course he took his corona typewriter over with him to Australia to have with him while he had corona. Also coincidentally he did a guest spot on the simpsons where he stated that America has lost its credibility so they are borrowing some of his. The last speech he gave before getting corona he said at the start bear with me I have a bad cold! But all just a coincidence right
Typewriters are not shit. 80s kid and grew up with both manual, electric and early PCs (remember the big floppy discs?). We had mandatory typing classes on IBM Executive machines in the early 90s while learning to use DOS in the computer classes. Without typewriters, you would not have computers. Bonus with typewriters: doesn't crash and lose your shit like computers. It forces you to slow down and really think about what you type. It's a totally different feel and process. One day, another generation will look at smartphones (this is another 50 years) and think WTF are we staring at such tiny shit screens.

Unless they scan all mail
Through a machine that x rays letters and mail and then will alert 🚨 any thought precrimes.
For me it's more about the lack of distractions and the feel. I love the connection to the machine.
@@peterbullen3347 Damn that's interesting
Since childhood I’ve been fascinated with these machines. Thanks Tom Hanks for making it trending!
I get no clicking sound - or any sound at all - when I use this app. Anyone else?
I memba my daddy had one 😂❤
No, no thanks Tom. Bunch of sheep.

Upper and lower case typing is just a cam usually to move the basket up or down.. operated by the shift key..
typewriters have always been cool
Duane is a great guy! He’s helped me out a few times and I’ve bought typing accessories from him.

Harlan Ellison was the king of the typewriter.

Do you throw away a full page when writing with a pen if you commit a single mistake? No, right?
Same with a typewriter.
They've ALWAYS been cool.
Any info about Duane Jensen?
If you don't own a typewriter, I have added typewriter simulator to Kiran's Typing Tutor (It is completely free)
Best I’ve ever owned was Consul made in Czechoslovakia.
Those are so cool. Lucky!

I have a 1930's Art Deco Woodstock Manual Typewriter you can have sir. I'm downsizing and giving away for someone who would appreciate it.

FU Tom Hanks! The paper gets jamed all the time in my old boy. Too thick and ribbons, i'm out!
Too bad old school, I like it.

cool to see but not to use
