15 years later still gives me the same goosebumps like it was yesterday… just amazing this guy
I'm seeing him in Newark in April! Can't wait!
he is one of the reasons why i have buy my ukulele ^^
man he is a BEAST on a uke!!! I really wanna learn now.
Legendary strums in the beginning.
Amazing!!
I'm an aspiring musician. so, if anyone has seen OnePunch-MAN, im the guy the leaves the Hero tests after seeing Saitama.
That is one hell GOOD LOOKING Ukele!!
Greatsssssssss
awesome!
OH SO AMAZİNGG
It isn't talent alone that made him good- it was dedication and practice. He's probably spent hundreds of hours practicing.
So go buy an instrument and play it! You can't discover your talents until you've tried to find them.
...with a Japanese name, which is quite common in Hawaii. His uke is custom made, and I'm pretty sure it's a concert uke.
I think I'm starting to see smoke coming out of that ukulele.
omg ..
its like he has ten THOUSAND fingers
+MarkMason Susee why is this so damn hilarious
MarkMason Susee he only needs one, maybe two depending which woman he's with
There is a Spanish guy somewhere in the world going "What the hell?"
Hahaha xD
😂🤣😂
He's pushed this instrument to its absolute limit. Amazing.
Who knew a uke could sound like that!
Check out taimane.
And also
Honoka and azita
i eat shit. thats it. :)
I love when some person appears, and shows the world how far an underrated instrument can be taken.
This is outstanding.
Seriously amazing!!! I just started playing and I can barely get my fingers across a few frets. Jake has awesome talent without a doubt!!!!
I love how he plays music. He doesn't just use his hands and arms but his whole body... his whole being >0< it's awesome.
I was expecting David Bowie's song haha :)
Same!
Unreal talent
ay ukulele isn't about being the best player, what matters is that you're enjoying yourself.
bruce Lee on Ukelele, lol This kid has strong kunf fu
Oh I get it you thought I was referring to his ethnicity! Wrong dude. nope bc I absolutely love Bruce Lee and honestly this kids kung fu is very strong! I could ask you the same thing about your wack ass screen name. Mr. Vagina Inspector! Time for a new pair of correction glasses if your eye sight is that bad! Oh thats right! your name is sexist! back at ya. Good luck with future inspections...
thats racist omg
Thank all you haters for disliking for this amazing video now the like bar looks like a freshly lit joint.
He is a great guy. He always smiles when he is not playing
I saw him play in hawaii on '03 alone at the Aloha Tower pier and he blew everyone away!
Even though it's been 7 years since I first saw this, it still blows my mind every single time.
And what about now ? 😉
He is just amazing. Who knew that a ukulele could sound like this?
WOW FRANKU
You really shouldn't compare yourself to someone who's been playing several hours a day since he was a child. Compare your progress to you and only you! :)
I like how Jake's playing sounds as if there were more than one musician in the room. Even after viewing this so many times, I'm still just like . . . wow.
Eu jamais iría acreditar se me falassem que o Jet Lee toca cavaquinho tão bem!!!
kkkkkkkkkk
@TexasTeaDrums I think i enjoyed this comment almost as much as this video lmao.
So many tecnics in one music, insane skill!
@connorsmog Too much feeling for me. I know everything that you wrote, since I play myself on piano (and some other instruments as well), and I am used to say that my face "follows" the music. But I still think that what Jake does is a bit over(re)acting just to show how great artist he is. He is one without these theatratical movements.
This is soo sick!
I love the response of the interviewer at the end ! Says it all really . This guy is unbelievable and is responsible for me firstly taking up guitar and now recently the Uke too .
hooooly shiiiiiiiiiiit! i can't believe that was just him, about half way through i was thinking his finger tapping was a drum or something it was all harmonised amazing!
I went to school with this guy! hahaahaha!!!! I didn't realize how talented he was...back then! He always played the uke! Better than me!!!
I love that technique he does at the beginning where he like strums all the strings with his fingers in the like first 20 second of the song. i so wish I could do that
@musicmaster555 @norich111 @cocody121 .... This guy has been playing since he was FOUR years old ... if you guys would do ANYTHING that long, then all you guys would be great at it, no exception ... your negative comments are inacceptable and racist ... his talent has nothing to do with origin, grow up, and see in your daily lives how you contribute to the betterment of this world ... cause this guy is way ahead, doing something he likes, and something he is good at ... learn from him
Just picked up a uke and having a blast. My classical guitar is in a case against the wall while I take my uke with me to the beach, to the hammock, to the park... I was in Guitar Center this weekend and they had a ukulele display, of all things - and two people were in the process of buying ukes. They were selling ukuleles in my CostCo of all places - and these were decent Kohala concert ukes. I think ukuleles are the fun, social instrument and am glad to see them becoming so popular.
@iMoreAsianR As someone who knows very little about instruments, I had to comment on how thoroughly impressive it is that you can extract so much information from just a video. Not only the type of instrument, but also precisely what materials it's made of and how much it costs...jeez, if I ever buy an acoustic instrument, I hope it's under the advisement of someone as knowledgeable as you. Bravo!
@DotzomgFearz yea it is, and for all those who keep asking what type of ukulele thumbs this up.
Custom Kamaka(brand) Tenor(size) Ukulele
full curly koa body
rosewood bindings,
i think the neck is also koa,
bridge and frets are ebony,
that sweet looking headstock is a slotted-style headstock.
with integrated fishman acoustic matrix amp outlets.
i'm sure he goes through many strings so i can't say anything about that.
goes for 5grand.
@TheJosh1111111111111 You can't judge if his "syncopation" is right or wrong because it is his song so the assumption is it's right; do you have the piece? It would be like me listening to a Jazz player free-style his music and get up and say, listen buddy, you held that E too long. It is clear though that you are quite arrogant, so this convo won't go anywhere. I won't get into this "normal ear" convo. You know I am a med student so I don't think of a normal ear the same way you seem to.
I think it you met Jake, as I have, you would change your mind. He's so infused with the music when he's playing that he loses himself if in it. He has spoken about how Bruce Lee, of all people, influenced him in the intensity with which he practiced his art. There are videos of him in studio, and that intensity is apparent. If it's something you only do for audiences, the performance usually suffers, and Jake is fantastic in concert. Just because you don't do it, doesn't mean others shouldn't.
@TomiRing The guy is just feeling the music. You look at every bass player they always have their "bass-face" when they're getting in the groove. Guitar players too. Watch some of the greatest artists play and how much emotion you can see in their face or head moving. It's not useless at all. It's art and it drives them towards making even better music. If you're not feeling the music then I would say you're taking the art away from music all together. It's not useless or acting. It's passion
@renaud260492 It's some kind of a mute action, I think he's very slightly lifting up his fingers (on left hand) each time he strikes, and emphasizing shifting in combination with multiple finger strums so that the sound doesn't resonate as much. Maybe there's palm/finger muting involved too (on his right hand). FYI I'm mostly a violinist, so try for yourself and you'll probably get a second opinion from an experienced strummer.
Tenerife, Spain, Africa.
The Spanish word for ukulele is 'timple', and here we use a more traditional version (sometimes with an extra fifth string, sometimes with the usual four) than the Hawaiian innovation.
I bet this Jake Shimabukuro would be interested in checking out Spanish players like Benito Cabrera.
Very nice work, Jake.
You should come here for a visit to check out older styles.
There are thousands of good timple-players here on this small island.
Best wishes,
Solstice.

Not necessarily. It's a completely different instrument, complete with it's own specific techniques.
By that logic Eddie Van Halen would be a much better or equally talented bassist as Flea or Les Claypool, just because a bass has less strings.
Just because the number of strings is less than that of a guitar, does not mean that the talent will translate to a different instrument.
1. Keep your cool, there's no need to lose your head over things this minor.
2. It's called "nation-ality" for a reason. No country/nation is an ethnicity in itself. The English for example are mainly Anglo-Saxon/Caucasian; native Japanese are Asian. Note that their race is not English or Japanese as that refers to their nationality. You can be any nationality but your roots stay with you. The closest thing we have to an "American race" would be the Native Americans. Hope that helps.
You're wrong. So you're saying America is the only country without it's own race? Black Americans aren't African. There is no such thing as a Japanese-American or a Mexican -American. If you are born here and raised American, no matter what color you are, YOU"RE AMERICAN! I am of the American race, it doesn't matter where my ancestors are from. It's ideas like yours which keep people seperated in this country!
@UkuleleAce The uke, at the moment, is quite the opposite of a dying instrument. Some might say we are in the midst of a ukulele movement. Eddie Vedder released a ukelele album, Taylor Swift toured with a uke, and uke sales have exploded. Rolling Stone even had an article about its popularity. You can't really think the ukulele is dying. I'll check out your video
Earl Scruggs is a banjo player that revolutionized the way people listin to the banjo. He is now 80+ years old!!!! but before him people thought of the banjo as an instrument in the circus or comedy. now its one of the main sounds in bluegrass and lots more.
Jake is the same way with his instrument!!
I can't wait to hear what comes next.
Jake shimabukuro is bomb the finger roll is a very very intense technique on ukulele or guitar he makes it look easy Im a professional musician its true ukulele is really easy to play but Jake Shimabukuro has more intensity and musicanship than most professional guitar players, also keep in mind this wasnt an electirc uke so its even more crazy
whatever.... it's not like I care ....
when I see someone with slanted eyes, I say he's an asian
evenr if I know he is born in the same city as me...
that's why I said "ethnically"
if you see a black person on the road, you'll not said "he is american" you will say "he's black"
and that was what the guy you replied meant
Honestly if this guy lived in the 15th Century....we'd all still be listening to his music. The MASTERS would have WORSHIPED HIM. Then again...he might have been burned at the stake for being possessed by the DEVIL. What a gift to us all....for us all. WOW!
can't understand why some people keep saying he's closing his eyes and showing off the entire time? He just happens to have small eyes and he's looking DOWN most of the time. I think he only closes his eyes at some parts when he gets into a lot of expression.
It's a japanese technique called cutting. It includes various techniques, but the idea is to create a rhythm with your strumming hand and lead with your left hand by muting the strings in different ways. Listen to "バーチャル晩餐会" (Virtual dinner party) by SID, and you'll see what I mean.
Ukulele isn't dying. It's the opposite!
I bought one a few weeks ago. It's not much good, but i liked a lot!!
Here in Brasil, a lot of people is using Ukes as well... Growing up fast the Uke's popularity!
=)
I've made a vídeo, by the way... But do not watch it. It's sucks... ;D
@notoddenby
so... the ukulele is very popular up there.. didnt know that...
but nothing spezial, that asian guys can do something good... you have a lot of those crazy guy.. it seems like everyone has no life up there because of one thing hes doing the whole day (but doing it perfectly)
US is a nationality not an ethnicity. A Japanese couple could travel on vacation to the United States and happen to birth a baby there during the vacation. The child would have US citizenship but the child's ethnicity is Japanese. It's based on genetic background not location at time of birth. : )
@OfGreatLakes thank you! i know how to do that, it's just a triplet with the thumb and the index
he is really good, but this is all because of practice. you can tell where he speeds up a little, especially the parts he enjoys...like any normal person, he gets a little excited when he plays his favorite parts, moving his fingers just a little faster
@TheJosh1111111111111 As I told you before though, I'll let the other commentators decide on how to judge you based on the comment, I just gave you my 2 cents. This convo though is over, lets not drag out through replies back and forth.
Knowing chords or tabs wont help you become a better player its how you interpret the song and how you take its income of how he plays it. Try listening and watching its worked for me for the past two years and i have become a successful uke player
HELLLOOOO!!! he is GOD? wow do u ppl forget jimmy hendrix, van halen, the beatles, and michael jackson? hell even carlos santana....FUCK GUYS he is good but damn dont forget or disrespect the greats that actually proved themselves!
Still love this
It looks like he might be laying a finger or two of his left hand on the strings while doing the last strum of the roll with the right hand to make that mute strum noise. It especially looks like this on the third one at 0:39.
hey, at first, you rule this instrument =)
i play the ukulele myself, a soprano, pretty cheap and with not that much tone. I´d like to buy a better one, could you give me some tips ??? what instrument do you play ???
@FearOfTheFlesh I understand your concern, but his sycopation is what i was refering to, he gets a little sloppy through out the last third of the peice. At 2:20 2:21 is probably the most noticeable mistake for normal ears.
I don't mean to be negative, but if you need someone to tab this for you, you aren't going to be good enough to play it. Learn your theory, practice, practice, practice and then you'll be able to figure it out... maybe.
How is comparing any of these artists proving anything?
They're all good at very very different things, including Jake Shimabukuro. If you really want to try to knock him down then name drop some Flamenco guitars or something.
holy fuck, thats amazing
at first i thought it was kinda cheezy and thought "i think i play better than him" but as i kept watching it got better and then turned into amazing, i can never beat that shit right there lol
are you sure? im pretty sure asian americans are people that were born in asia but are citizens of the US. hawaiians are just americans. im not sure why we have to specify that they are hawaiians.
I'm very lucky, i have seen god. And it's fun because he play the ukulélé!
(i'm french, sorry for the spelling...)
a sentens in french?
INCROYABLE!!!!! sa te dirai de me donner des cours Jake? :3
I agree. James shows an incredible amount of showmanship. A few novelty acts, like Billie Jean, but everything he plays is impressive. Jake's playing just gets boring to me after a time.
i really wanna learn this song and i got the very first part by watching him on this vid. but when he gets to that picking part i just crap myself even thinking of dreaming of trying to play that part ;(
what type of ukulele is he using?
i wud apreciate if someone tells me because i really want to buy one and im lost with the different sizes that they are and i want the type Jake has.
thank youuuu!! :DD
jake shimabukuro took the ukulele, raped and enslaved it, and then the ukulele got stockholm syndrom. Since then, he has redifined this instrument and made it into his own indentured servant........GOD.
@whoesthatsexyguy When you're playing that quickly, it can actually be a hindrance to try to watch your fingers. It's much more efficient to just know what you're doing and "feel" it.
I typed in country music sucks into the search and this was the first video that came up. makes me dream of a world where all shit country music was replaced by amazing music like that.
although to be fair he did an album thingy with all the distortion, but then gave it up. not really sure why. maybe it didn't work. i think he should stick with the ukulele- more unique :)
wow before I thought Ukelele's were little bitch instruments compared to guitars...but after seeing this video and a video of him shredding it up with marty, this guy proved me wong!
I'm sorry. It's just that there are so many idiotic people on TH-cam that take almost no regard to making their comments comprehensible. Congratulations on knowing three languages.
it's sounds kinda like a 'Spanish' style character theme for a Final Fantasy game to me : )
Such an amazing piece. This guy can do with 4 strings what few can do with many more.
@PIECREST I know I saw a guy at this blues fest and he played ukulele I always joked about it...and now when I see what you can do...holy crap I want to learn so bad!
wait, let me see if i got it well, this guys ain't got even 3 mil views, and justin bieber gets tens of milion views for that "music" ? this is art not that baby shit
rock beats scissors, scissors beats paper, paper beats rock; Chuck Norris beats all 3 but who needs Chuck Norris when Asians are better than EVERYONE at EVERYTHING! :)
bennybigbooper jk gosh besides i am not a petifile or anything gosh anyways that sounded like a 2 yr old or a 6o yr old trying to MAKE a 2yr old laugh and a 4yr old cry
I am slightly disappointed because I expected this to be a Jake Shimabukuro cover of David Bowie's Let's Dance. But upon hearing it...its hard to be disappointed...
oh ya, my bad. i got nationality and ethnicity mixed up. but i still dont think they are asian. i think over the years hawaiian has developed its own ethinicity.
@AppoHead77 nah I just keep telling myself "nevermind, he's awesome, but you can CLAP WITH ONE HAND, DUDE! That's much more awesome. They're just jealous of you."
how this guy is not the biggest name in music i dont know. Haven't seen someone that good at their inSTRUMent (lol get it) in a long time. Kudos to you Jake!!
