    What is the IR-D?
The Friedman IR-D dual-channel tube preamp is an entire Friedman rig in a compact pedalboard-friendly package. IR-D boasts two fully independent identical foot-switchable channels which are based on Friedman’s legendary Dirty Shirley/Twin Sister design. This Dave modded JTM45 circuit delivers the signature British tone for which Friedman is known for.
Powered by two high-voltage 12AX7 preamp tubes, each channel delivers the harmonic richness and touch response of Dave Friedman’s finest designs. DSP IR cabinet/power amp simulation sends a studio-quality mic’d-up tone to your DAW or Front-of-House. The IR-D provides easy-to-use controls without complex menus and 100-page manuals.

Gotta say that this demo of the IR-D was one of the best I’ve seen.
Very informative, lots of humor, great playing! Well done, guys!

I bet if you shot an IR of the cab you had miced up for this video and put it in the Friedman IR-D and then did the A/B test it would be even closer. Good job guys!

Thank you my friend! Unfortunately, we couldn’t download the software as it wasn’t up on the website at the time of this demo. However, I totally agree. A lot of the major differences in tone came from how detailed the stock IR’s were. Overall, I’m super impressed with this unit. The clean and low gain setting are exceptional and that’s where most of these units struggle

Or just run FX send from the pedal into the DS power amp and used the same power amp and cab. The backend of the pedal is digital, and also has way different cabs and mic configs in the IR’s. So you could never really expect this setup to produce a dead on likeness. The IR-D is essentially the preamp section of the DS, so the above setup would be only fair way to to compare them really, if that’s what you’re after.

if the put the IR-D wihout the IR, on power class D and plug in the same Cab, it probably sound the same

At the end, when you’re comparing the amp and IR-D, with dirty tones, they sound totally different… drastically different

I agree 1000%. If given the choice between this or any IR device vs a tube amp, I would much rather have a tube amp. That’s my personal preference.👍

These aren't similar at all though? If you really wanted to test them with a loop for A/B, you could have run the IRD into a *Power Amp* and then into the same speaker cab. But man, the differences in this demo are astronomical

So I just ordered this and I have basically no idea what it does. Because GAS. Anyway all this direct stuff means nothing to me but I’m just hoping that I can turn my DSL 40 into a Dirty Shirley via the effects loop. ( I know the speaker and the power amp is part of it too) anyway that’s what I’m hoping to achieve. Or try it anyways

I was surprised honestly how different the gain sounds were. Like very noticeably different. Not inherently worse but clearly different.

It is worth noting that the software makes a tremendous difference when dialing in tones that are closer to the real thing. This demo just showcases the sounds that are onboard this unit right out of the box. That said I totally agree with you, there’s no doubt about it: They are different.👍

I love my IR-D, especially after loading some York IR’s onto it. It really made a big difference compared to Dave’s. The overdrives are so clear I don’t even want to use my overdrive pedals anymore. My Iridium sounded flat and 2d in comparison. I never felt like the iridium changed much with the York IR’s. People seem to love the UA lion but I can’t stand it.

    • @naterevolution

I agree, I do prefer the IRD over the Lion. It’s easier to use. It sounds great with minimal tweaking. Two thumbs up.👍👍

just got one of those today, opened the box excitedly and plugged it into my pedal board... and low and behold.. I get a metronome type click thru the audio signal ... no matter whether using channel one, or two.... My guess is blown tube? Anyway, returning it and getting a replacement...

Hi Sam, what were you running this into? Did you run it in isolation as well by chance?

@@nashdude2 first off, my bad ... mine is the IR-X, just realized after I typed the comment this is a slightly different unit, but yes, did it in isolation as well, same thing.. it's a metronome type sound, loud click with some distortion .. both channels, 1 and 2.

You really compared the the IR with the Friedman Box? That doesn't makes sense for a comparsion. Or did I missed here something?

  • @Scott__C
    @Scott__C 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

You don't sit in front of the furnace, you sit in the room with the vents in it. 🤣
On the gain channels, Dave's cab 4x12 IR is going to be a lot different than the 1x12 cab.

@@naterevolution Well I like the thought of a real tube preamp that breaks up exactly like the real thing but that goes into ir options. I’m a tube guy as well, it’s like they marketed it for us to try lol
