I think you are misinterpreting our message. We were simply saying that if you planning a trip half way around the world based on what other TH-camrs have posted that it isn't true. The people were lovely and it's a fine stop on your way in and out of the Amazon but it's just not a beautiful city to visit for an extended period. Nothing more...nothing less. It's the truth. Trust me...there are plenty of city here in the USA just like that!
I have been to Iquitos twice on Ayahuasca retreats. I disagree with you simply because my worldview is one of empathy. I had a great time in Iquitos and would love to visit again.
Hey Roy, thanks for responding. Maybe we missed the mark on communication if we sounded UN-empathetic. We too travel the world and see all kind of conditions and feel for all of those who aren't in the best of situations. Our commentary was really about given a little bit of travel time in Peru, is Iquitos worth spending that precious time visiting. Our answer was yes as a gateway on your way in and out of the Amazon but no in terms of additional time to visit Iquitos as a destination. Does that make sense?
Hey Roy I really am interested inayahuasca retreat tour , I’m in Colombia studying Spanish , if you could direct me as to how I can do this , I would really appreciate it thanks Niko.
Iquitos should be still considered off-the-beaten-path for the average tourist. Especially, if they don't speak Spanish. Which is a shame, because this city is surrounded by rainforests and National Parks (you can see the rainforest and rivers in most of the shots of this video). This is one of the reasons why it's considered one of the gates to the Amazon. And if you're going to any of the amazing eco-lodges around Iquitos, is your starting destination. But the city is not that pretty. Again, it's also a shame because if the local government could invest to restore the historical buildings, have a proper waste management policy, and improve the public transport (well, I don't mind to ride in a tuk-tuk, specially with the hot and humid weather) it has the potential to be a very nice small city, especially with all those historical buildings, which can't be seen in other places of Peru, like the one designed by Gustave Eiffel (the same guy from the Eiffel tower). Most of the historical buildings are from the Caucho fever era. Another problem with this city is that is underdeveloped. The only way that this city is connected to other cities is by river or plane (which is really expensive). This is mostly done to preserve the rainforest from illegal deforestation and illegal mining, but this makes the city (and their citizens) poorer than the rest of Peru. So I think it's also understandable why they are not able to speak English. Even some people have Spanish as a second language, having an indigenous language as their first (like Awaruna). If you're not able to see beyond all these issues, then Iquitos is not for you. But if you do, awesome! Unfortunately, most of the touristic guides about Iquitos are in Spanish, but I found this guide (iquitostravelguide.com/lugares-turisticos-mas-visitados-en-iquitos/) (in English and French). PD: I think that the video title could sound misleading because it sounds like they were scammed in Iquitos, which wasn't the case.
Hey...I want to thank you for your thoughtful reply! A couple things I'd like to clarify... We were on our way to the Amazon and it's a great way to journey in, we were just expecting something very different. The "scam" is/was after watching other TH-camr's version of the city, we expected something much nicer and we had extended our visit there to take advantage of what we had seen about the city. That was the scam... bad information we got from TH-cam. We loved the people and managed to work around the Spanish speaking ok. It was just weird that we've been...ALL over the world and had more issues with the language in Iquitos than in rural China or the outskirts of Egypt. It just was odd that this was where we struggled the most with communication. We don't want to do a hit job on Iquitos but... We do want to share a real sense of our travel experience so that people watching our videos can really use them as a reference to plan their trips. That honesty is important for our goal here.

I’ve never been to Iquitos but I’ve heard a lot of people really like it. I think that the issue of communication may have made the experience worse. Peru isn’t a country where English is as dominant as India for example (since you mentioned you’ve been there). And in the more rural/jungle areas it’s a lot less common. I think Iquitos may be more of a “tourist” destination for South Americans or anyone who speaks Spanish, as well as for anyone who knows what to expect in such an area. Otherwise I can see how it would be disappointing, especially when advertised as something it’s not. However, I’m also wondering what videos you saw. I just watched Samuel and Audrey’s video on Iquitos (the first impression one) and they showed the same things as you showed. Anyway, hopefully your next trips are less disappointing!
We spent two weeks in Peru and could not have loved the trip more...it was amazing! Our only point was really that we wouldn't recommend spending extra time in Iquitos. I think our time would have been better off extending our stay in the Amazon, in Cuzco, or in the Sacred Valley. That was it, not that it was a bad place, just not as good as the rest of it...from our perspective.
you explayined everything the way it is and the way it should be because its sad that people do vlogs on youtube with an amazing footage but many of them dooesnt ectualy tell you the right things and you are not prepared of what is the expectation :) we cant blame on the low development on that country or that place but yes we can do blame on the media and on all the influencers out here on the platform that give the wrong information with some visuals just for their own bennefit :) anyway love the video and thanks for sharig :)
.....about the garbage on the street...I just came back from a 3 1/2 weeks trip in Hawaii, and I visited all the islands, except for Molokai.....and I was as surprise about the amount of garbage and rotten cars parked in front of very run down houses, at least Iquitos is a THIRD WORLD city....but Hawaii? @@DOUGandNIKI hahahaa my long nails and the small keypads, let me correct it: I was in Hawaii for 3 weeks and a half, and I visited almost all the islands, except for Molokai...
This video alone is proof of why you shouldn't plan your travel based on TH-cam videos. "This is the least-English speaking place we've ever been" = selling point for me. God forbid you learn enough of the local language to ask the name of the restaurant. Stay home.
@@DOUGandNIKI You do know that not every country has its own language, right champ? And "Spanish" isn't exactly an obscure language, especially in Latin America. Y'all should stick to the RV parks in Georgia, close to the McD's and such.
@@098synergy That makes sense for folks who don't travel much but we travel the world. Spanish is just an America's thing other than Spain obviously. Hi, how are you? I am from the city of Iquitos. I'm sorry for the bad experience you had in my city. Can you answer these questions for you please? * Why is Iquitos not nice? * What services, attractions, places and infrastructure did you expect in the city? * What did he want to do in the city? * What is missing to Iquitos to be a better city? * Would I go back to Iquitos if it's better? Thank you very much for the answers.
There is nothing "wrong" with Iquitos. The problem is if you look at TH-cam videos they make it look like a bright and shiny amazing place to visit. Because of that we stayed extra days to experience it and our time is really valuable when we travel. We loved the open market and the quick visit on our way through to the amazon but beyond that it was kind of not what it's made out to look like here on TH-cam. I think we laid that out pretty well in the video. You guys just need some improved government, some money, and cleaning up to be a tourist destination. Not every town needs to be a tourist destination to be a great town. That's now what the measure of a people or a city should be.
La ciudad de Iquitos es maravillosa, y la gente es muy carinosa y muestra mucha hospitalidad. Vivia en varios locales como sargento lores y avenida del ejercito. Voy a volver pronto. Lo negativo es la bulla de los motocarros. Ojala que nunca haya un camino de la costa. Mejor aislado de la locura del exterior, en la panza de Pachamama
Some of the things you point out are ridiculous and petty. A crack on the sidewalk? Trash bags waiting to get picked up? Common man, that’s nothing. You literally went to the Amazon jungle and expected first world country?
We spent the week before in the sacred valley visiting locals who don't even have finished floors. We are talking dirt floors and they had so much more respect and pride in themselves. There was no litter, the roads were cobblestone but kept in good condition. Same country...every bit as poor...but a totally different experience. It's absolutely fair to point that out if we are trying to share our experiences with other travelers. We're from New York and experts on litter and cracked sidewalks. This was on enough of a level we thought we should share our experience. That's all.
if you knew Iquitos City is hot ,why you wearing long sleeve shirt, instead of tank top or something...i can imaging, how bad ,you was smelling ,almost comparable to that open drain sewer.
Very slick Jose, did it take you long to come up with something so deep and thoughtful? Before you answer... As we were traveling into the Amazon I could only bring a limited amount of "clothes" and that shirt is vented and bug repellent so I could try to return without and new tropical diseases...which worked. The other thing that worked was a shower and deodorant so no, I didn't stink. Thanks for checking in anyway.
Many white people wear long sleeved shirts in the tropics to protect from sun exposure, you moron. I lived in north Queensland for many years (if you even know where that is).
It is clear you are no great intellectual giants. Who would would have known that the prevalent language in Peru is Spanish or that it becomes very hot? Yet through sheer intrepidity you have exposed reality to the pollyannas of this world.
Why don't you call use Karen's and then take a little time to watch us in the Jungle on the Amazon, or in Egypt, or in India, or in China and maybe check the tude about us not being aware of the weather or the language issues. That is precisely why we know...EXACTLY...what we speak of and were completely on point. We've seen it and lived it (all over the world) so we can fairly comment on it. Thanks for your shallow bitching though.
I'm agree with you. I'm from Iquitos, but most people go to the forest instead of stay at the city. But the city has been abandoned, because of the government is centralist (Lima is just important, the rest no).
We loved Perue and actually really like Iquitos as a temporary transit point. Our mistake was spending an extra day there to see the city based on what we saw on TH-cam. That was the point of the video.
I agree. We did not enjoy Iquitos either. Filthy and chaotic. Serious noise and air pollution from the constant sea of motocarros; and highly dangerous driving. I lived in Spain for 5 years and have a very high level of Spanish, but that didn't help our impression.
Thanks for the support. We've been to Spain a number of times before we started this channel and always loved it. Where else did you go in Peru? How was the rest of your trip?
@@DOUGandNIKI The only other place we went in Peru was Lima, where my wife had to attend a conference. Lima was OK, I guess, but I wouldn't rush back there. We liked it better than Santiago at least, which is very shabby. It's all a long way from Sydney anyway!
@@NoTaboos We're off to India soon that should be interesting. How did you find our channel by the way? We're working hard to build the channel so it's always interesting to hear how people find their way to us.
These people have no clue about traveling in the 3rd world. Iquitos is like a resort compared to Cambodia, Burma, Laos and so many places. Please stick to Cabo, Cancun, hawaii and other gringo spots.
@@DOUGandNIKI Here's my 3 Hot Tips regarding enjoying travel in the 3rd world: 1) If you will cringe and whine about the amount of poverty, go somewhere else 2) If you struggle with the fact that they can't afford infrastructure that you are accustomed to (e.g. municipal sewage treatment, regular trash pickup with proper trucks/cans), go somewhere else 3) If you are too lazy to take a language training course (beginning a few months before your trip so that you can respect the locals by at least making an attempt to communicate a little with your host, go somewhere else. those three tips should server you well. Here's a bonus tip: 4) If you are unwilling to hang out with the locals and try to discover that many of these "dirt poor" people are lovely children of God and are very bit as good as we are, go somewhere else.

The whole point is that this city is exactly what you said, it's 3rd world and if you look at most reviews/information on TH-cam it looks bright and shiny and not 3rd world. Our goal/point is to correct that image so when people travel there from 1/2 way around the world they know what to expect...not that the people or place is bad just that it isn't at all what people show on TH-cam which is completely fair, honest, and true.

Thanks! We love Ninsky and Elly's channel and their VLOGS from Peru...awesome...check them out if you are looking for additional Peru videos.
.....about the garbage on the street...I just came back from a 3 1/2 weeks trip in Hawaii, and I visited all the islands, except for Molokai.....and I was as surprise about the amount of garbage and rotten cars parked in front of very run down houses, at least Iquitos is a THIRD WORLD city....but Hawaii? Hawaii is a state from "the most powerful country in the world"....
That's so cool that you were in Hawaii for an extra 1/22nd of a week. How long is that?
@@DOUGandNIKI hahahaa my long nails and the small keypads, let me correct it: I was in Hawaii for 3 weeks and a half, and I visited almost all the islands, except for Molokai...
@@seus2731 We know...it was just fun to goof around a little. We're glad you watched our video. We hope you subscribe and enjoy more videos.
This video alone is proof of why you shouldn't plan your travel based on TH-cam videos.
"This is the least-English speaking place we've ever been" = selling point for me. God forbid you learn enough of the local language to ask the name of the restaurant.
Stay home.
Thanks for your input Matt... Talk to us when you get to your 50th country or so and let us know how well you've done with all 50 of those languages.
If you knew what you were talking about, French is the most commonly spoken language after English. But...of course you didn't know that. No surprise to anyone.
@@DOUGandNIKI incorrect. Mandarin is the most common language after English. And I'm guessing you don't know a single word of that either genius.

VERY UNFAIR OPINION OF IQUITOS
Share with us and those who read these comments, how are we wrong?
Iquitos is a complete shambles. We would never go back.
Iquitos will soon be better since it will not be isolated anymore. The Nanay bridge will connect it even to Colombia.
We loved Peru and wish the best for the people of Iquitos...hopefully it really raises the city up.
@@DOUGandNIKI Better you folks stick to popular tourist destinations. May I suggest amazing Disneyland or incredible Six Flags?
@@ayahuascayage Dude...we never thought of that. We'll have to Google them.
We couldn't disagree more, we love this region. To each their own. BTW you might want to invest in a gimble or other type of image stabilization.
When were you there?
2015 and 2019
@@mikefreaz It looked differently than what we showed? We were there at the same time frame?

@@DOUGandNIKI Thanks.
Interesting, thanks for the useful insight.
thanks
How about the restaurant "The Yellow Rose of Texas"? Five Star
Huh?
Hopefully the government will change their stance and re-invest in Iquitos.
Please share the names of the vloggers so that we can identify and be careful ahead
It was like a year ago. If you search for Iquitos and look at the popular vlogs you will see what we mean.
be careful next time , feel sorry to know that theyre scammed you
There are a lot of worse things that goes on. It was just disappointing the conditions there compared to what we expected
Yea I think you should of stayed in Florida lol
We loved Perue and actually really like Iquitos as a temporary transit point. Our mistake was spending an extra day there to see the city based on what we saw on TH-cam. That was the point of the video.
3:25 That will be America after a few years of Liberal governments
Scary right?

@@DOUGandNIKI ...err, I think you missed the point. I had quoted your comment at 7 minutes.
@@jamesaloyisius6210 OK
These people have no clue about traveling in the 3rd world. Iquitos is like a resort compared to Cambodia, Burma, Laos and so many places. Please stick to Cabo, Cancun, hawaii and other gringo spots.
Why don't you share 3 of your amazing tips on how to improve on what we did traveling in the 3rd world so others can do a better job than we did.
@@DOUGandNIKI Here's my 3 Hot Tips regarding enjoying travel in the 3rd world:
1) If you will cringe and whine about the amount of poverty, go somewhere else
2) If you struggle with the fact that they can't afford infrastructure that you are accustomed to (e.g. municipal sewage treatment, regular trash pickup with proper trucks/cans),
go somewhere else
3) If you are too lazy to take a language training course (beginning a few months before your trip so that you can respect the locals by at least making an attempt to communicate a little with your host, go somewhere else.
those three tips should server you well.
Here's a bonus tip: 4) If you are unwilling to hang out with the locals and try to discover that many of these "dirt poor" people are lovely children of God and are very bit as good as we are, go somewhere else.
@@jamesaloyisius6210 So now that you've shared all that fair commentary, take a look at our channel...at us eating with locals in Egypt, in jungles of India, and spending time with a family in Urubamba who live in a one room house with dirt floors and then retry your attitude.
I lived in Cambodia for nine years. I loved it.
