Let me know your thoughts on Gladiator II guys, and to follow up, let me know if a Gladiator (2000) vid would be fun/helpful (I’d recommend revisiting it before 2 but I know people don’t always have the time), or any other videos you’d like to see!🙌🏼
i'd give it a 3/5. and all owing to connie nielsen, whom i think did the heavy lifting. i love The Zel, but a gay alonzo harris is just out of place in ancient rome (or anywhere).
I love in this film the parallels between Acacius and Maximus. Acacius is what Maximus would have been if he lived in the Coliseum. It just so happened that he and Lucius ended up at the opposite side of war in the opening battle and ended up giving his life for Lucius later in the film (another parallel).
Just watched Gladiator II and enjoyed it a lot more than I thought it would, my favourite Ridley Scott film! I ran to this video as soon as I was done writing my review, of course
🤔 Watchable, but nowhere near, in the same class as the original. And, around the 3rd and final act, ie after one of the twin emperors is killed, the story just turns silly and movie loses it's way...
5-star movie for me! Scott is my favorite director. My Ridley Ranking: 1 Kingdom of Heaven (director's cut) 2 Gladiator 1 3 Napoleon 4 Body of Lies 5 Alien 6 Black Hawk Down 7 Last Duel 8 Blade Runner 9 Gladiator 2 10 Alien Covenant 11 Exodus Gods & Kings 12 Prometheus 13 Thelma & Louise 14 Hannibal 15 The Duelist 16 American Gangster 17 GI Jane 18 The Martian 19 Matchstick Men 20 The Counselor 21 Black Rain 22 House of Gucci 23 Legend (sorry) 24 Robin Hood 25 Some To Watch Over Me 26 All the Money in the World 27 1492
Looking forward to this movie since 2000,Also Spencer Treat Clark is in the new Salem's Lot movie. Paul Mescal played GAA Football not as good as GAA Hurling.
Wow, i hated Lucilla in this movie which is my hang up with this movie. It relied a lot on the first one. Instead of letting this round of character's (besides Denzel) carry it Scott basically said plot and characters from the first movie will carry this one then I'll throw in some new stuff
Good review! I felt it threaded familiar ground too often. It copies so much from the story of the first movie but it felt oddly paced in comparison. I also think they tried to create Maximus 2.0 instead of focusing on a making a interesting new character. Even motivations for revenge kinda falls flat if you compare it to the first movie.
Ah this movie was horrible. They took the legacy, the myth of Maximus and crap on it. So the entire point of his revenge is because of the murder of his wife and kid, that apparently, who he was unfaithful??? He didn't need to be related to Maximus, no need. The story went down hill from there, for me, also that saying he has, "know this, where death is, we are not.", stinks. "Are you not entertained?" I was not
You predict a lot of ppl will like it more than the original? Unsubscribed. That's the dumbest thing I've heard this year. You have no idea what you are talking about. That 1 statement stopped me from watching this review. I just saw the movie. It was a 7/10 for me maybe a 6/10. The original was a 9/10 maybe 9.5. Nuff said.
@@SydneyVolpe No, I'm pretty sure you said you thought ppl would like the sequel more. That's the vibe you got. That's insane. The first 1 is a masterpiece. It didn't need a sequel. I still gave it a chance and it wasn't bad but wasn't in the same vicinity as the 1st one. Also, look what you just replied to me, you are saying, you say, I think the original is better? The way you phrase that is you are unsure if it is? It's just disappointing. You look young. I am about to start a channel for reviews and stuff. I've been going to see other channel videos and they were all dissapointing. Gladiator is an iconic and masterful film. Number 2 isn't even in the same conversation. I think I might now go and watch your video and see what you actually think lol.
Ok Sydney, maybe there is hope for your generation yet. Yes, you gave it the same score I gave it and I like you described some of the problems I had. The motivations for the characters made no sense. Whoever edited this krap just needs to get fired. Lucius hates the general because he ordered his men to kill another combatant his wife in a battle? That makes no sense. She was an enemy. Wtf is that? Maximus hated Commodus coz he straight up ordered soldiers to rape and murder his innocent wife and child. Non combatants. In a battle, it's fair game. His motivation could be to hate the Roman institution but to hate the person that's doing a job in a battle makes no sense when you yourself are a soldier. If ppl like you predict will like this more than Gladiator, then truly the world is at a dark place. Gladiator has such great writing and acting. In that scene where the Emperor shows Maximus favour and you see the hurt/jealousy in Commodus's eyes when he watches them together, that simple scene just conveyed the characters so well. In this, I had no idea who Hanno/Lucius was, what he wanted or anything? Denzel's character was easily the most interesting but again, I don't know why he wants what he wants. None of the side characters did anything or showed anything. In original Gladiator, you understood the motivations of a simple slave. In this, it was nothing. Sure the specatcles were great, like the naval battle but some things were ridiculous, like sharks in the arena LOLOL. Anyway, sorry for attacking you but it was dissapointing to hear you say that you think ppl would like this more than the original. I cannot fathom a reality where this statement is true. I just cannot fathom it. Blade Runner 2049 was great but better than the original? No way. Same with this. I was entertained but so many mistakes especially character motivations. 3.5 or even a 3/5 for me. Carry on.

Thanks for the video, Sydney.
Love how you always address what's being said by your peers, but also often have a different perspective to share.
Appreciate you!🙌🏼
The first gladiator is a masterpiece! Pretty much an impossible task for a sequel to top it
Great overview. Subscribed!
@@lilij1915 thanks so much!!🙌🏼

Yess great point!!
I've been waiting to watch this video (just watched the movie yesterday) and I am so hype to hear your thoughts

Thank you! I totally agree!
Great review, Sydney! Yeah, I have to say I mostly agree with everything you said here.

Great video Syd! I would love to see a summary video on the first Gladiator!
Thanks papa!!
Thanks for your wonderful review! I am a huge Ridley Scott fan, I cant wait to watch it on iMAX
Outstanding story, strength and honour.
Connie Nielsen ❤
Exactly! Thats why I loved it!

I saw ‘Legend’ for the first time and it didn’t click with me, however I liked Tim Curry’s performance as Darkness 😅
I think videos on older videos is a great idea, way bigger range of ideas and you could also make videos on some of your favorite movies.
I agree, I feel like there’s a big hole in the film criticism TH-cam circle for films older than 2008 or so
Love this movie think the told story in full this should leave it here enjoy it big time
Would love a review the original Gladiator, especially in conjunction with a spoiler review of Gladiator 2!
First one rocks everything about it is great and Hans Zimmer scores 😮💨. I’m excited to see the 2nd one
the score ain't much this time around bub
Looking forward to this movie since 2000,Also Spencer Treat Clark is in the new Salem's Lot movie. Paul Mescal played GAA Football not as good as GAA Hurling.
I'm looking forward to this, but sequels don't usually live up to the original in my experience.
I have a feeling this is not going to be better than the first one. But I'm still going to see it.
I thoroughly enjoyed this film.
The people demand an OG Gladiator video
The movie had me hooked throughout except for the disappointing climax.
Yes! Now do the first one 😌
Training Day pre-quel? 😉
how alonzo got reincarnated as straight
I didn't really like the original but I'm looking forward to seeing this!
Ooo hope you enjoy this one more then!
Honestly, better than the original
How did they get sharks and salt water into the coliseum and then get it out for the next day haha
Shh too many questions lmao
Paul is miscast and felt that from the first poster
Well I don't remember the first one, this seems interesting.
you'd really want to remember after seeing the second one

That’s fair enough, i liked her character still but i think most of the interesting stuff just didn’t get enough room to breathe

revisit gladiator 1!!
Saw it, total trash …. It’s not even close to the original
😩this year officially made me lose faith in old ah directors; Coppola, Scott, Zemeckis. Scorsese is the only good one left
The first one was great the second one had a bad story some weird feminist twists in it and barely made any sense. I’d say 2 out of 10

I'd love a revisit of the original Gladiator!
Good to know!!
and you might want to just stay there
Just seeing the trailers, what a totally unnecessary hammy follow up - Russell Crowe he ain't. Cobblers.
Greatest actor of all times? You clearly haven't seen any movies made before 2000.
@@djc836 this is not an unpopular opinion and I have seen a great many films made before 2000 lol
As someone who never really clicked with the original. This has me excited. I’d gladly take a redux with smoother cinematography.
Hope you enjoy it!!
It's pretty campy, like when a certain character first sees a big ol' bust
