    I don’t remember how many times I’ve watched all of your videos Floyd! you know I just love your style! I see some people show a qy70 or a qy100 and complain about antiquated sounds! First of all I like the sounds! The Data is what’s important anyway! Complaining about a unit that is still 100% usable that does what these do for, maybe $200, is pretty frickin greedy!!! And unrealistic! The more I play with these, the more I want to do some videos on Komplete 14 and Cubase and show the real value of these gems! Love ya buddy!

    Great Stuff. Why did Yamaha stop making such cool versatile devices... Roland has carried on, but this was the last QY and it's from 2001. I love the tweaking of the filter settings with the midi controller, I'm going to set up my Novation Launchkey Mk3 to do the same.

    • @mr_floydst
      @mr_floydst  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you! Yeah, that's a good question. The rise of Laptop-/Tablet-powered DAWs and plugins certainly played a part here, but as you pointed out, the other manufacturers kept updating their hardware.

      The ANNOYING thing about yamaha. Is they never look back. And see what the customer wants. They will make a great instrument. Then leave it floating in time forever. They've done this since the DX7. Right up to the QY100.

    • @mr_floydst
      @mr_floydst  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@fender1000100 I think it's a bit different. The stuff they built in the 90s was forward-thinking, but customers didn't buy it as much as anticipated. Back then, DAWs and VSTs were taking off, and XG/GM was getting bad rep. Like analogue synths were having a bad time in the end of the 80s. :-)

      Aha.. Someone else setting up a NL Mk3 with a QY.. How?! I mean.. What's the sequence of connections.. I'd sent this to Floyd earlier: "Hello Floyd, very watchable video. I wonder if you can advise me on the QY100? I just bought a Novation Launchkey 49 MkIII ~ intending to start working with Ableton. (I'm 'oldschool' and had always previously worked with CoolEdit) However, I find that Ableton isnon-intuitive, and difficult to understand or get to grips with. (not to mention the irritation of uploading, downloading, registering, and installing all sorts of programs and interfaces ~ When I just want to make music. I managed to pick up a QY100 secondhand here in China, and so now I have the Launchkey, a QY100 and my laptop - and have a 'DAW' ~ Cakewalk which is still available as a free download and install ~ No updating, upgrading, subscribing necessary!
      My query is this: How can I, if it's possible (!), utilise my LaunchKey 49 as a controller for the QY100, and combine with / record into Cakewalk?
      I'm wanting to utilise the soundbanks and drums on the QY100, possibly the sequencer too - But using the Novation as the control surface. Is it possible?
      Do I, should I get Cakewalk to 'recognise' the QY100 (somehow) and then the LaunchKey as the MIDI controller.. ~ So LaunchKey ~ Laptop (DAW-Cakewalk) ~ QY100 .. or.. LaunchKey ~ QY100 ~ Cakewalk ~ Obviously leads cables and connectors are not my forte!"

    I just started my journey with a qy70. I couldn't justify paying twice the price for the 100 as i am would probably never use the audio features. I also prefer the smaller form factor. I'm wondering if the qy100 has any other advantages such as sample quality ? Great to see these devices get the attention they deserve, let's not push the prices up too much though eh ! 😉 Perhaps Yamaha could work on an updated qy/qx one day, with a built in sampler to compete with contemporary grooveboxes and a backlight, and flashing coloured buttons......

      @seanluke3052 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The QY100 has two critical advantages: (1) it can save to standard MIDI Files (albeit in SMF0) and (2) it can save to SmartMedia cards, which even now can be read by computers. This means you can easily transfer data back and forth with DAWs and store it on disk. The QY70 cannot do this.

    • @Kevhuman
      @Kevhuman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I actually prefer the sound of the qy70. It's a bit chiptunes but it's bright and cuts through a mix. I only really use it to trigger other synths/drums anyhow
      I can completely see the advantage of the smart media and saving to midi. Whilst waiting for an affordable qy100 to appear, I actually picked up a second qy70. I mostly do dawless stuff so it's a quick way to back up without turning the laptop on. I just dump any patterns I want saving to the other unit.

      I used to work on ableton, but I really wanted to switch to hardware - hence rs7k. The An1x for me is a dynamic keyboard pattern, but modest polyphony ( when you like play a jazz hords ) - hence it is my control keyboard, and the M-Audio lies in the corner. the only thing i managed to do was the UC-33 controlling the effects in the rs7000 in real time for each channel separately + volume. but still and with envy I look at the equipment from the Elektron stable, incl. No, this a a general midi / xg module, the liven xfm is an FM synthesizer. This is sample-based, but you can change the envelopes, filters, tuning, effects, resonance... (basically, most of the usual subtractive synth stuff) to create new sounds.

      That's correct. The LPF filter is around 70% for most of the patches.
