Title will probably change, cuz I'm really bad at names xD
Anyway, here it is, the new, improved, hopefully final this time, regular boss theme for the big encounters!
For those that don't know, similarly to a lot of the game's soundtrack, the boss theme has actually first been made a few years ago, close to when the game's development truly started, and when I was just starting to learn and get my footing in music making. I was really proud of it at the time, but ever since, as my music kept improving, it felt less and less... good. So, I tried to remake it many times since, but just never really liked it any more, as a lot of the song just felt... Samey. I came close to giving up and making a new one entirely, until i tried just for the hell of it to instead try to come up with new melodies to insert in place of the old ones, and surprisingly, it started to work! Changing around some stuff, inserting new melodies then giving those new chord progressions, i ended up making a weird mix of old and new that I'm really proud of. It finally feels like an exciting, epic confrontation! I hope the bosses of the game can match the hype I felt making this song!

Hunter Chronicles: Tara and Vyn is an indie game inspired by the Mario and Luigi series - primarily developed by me and MaxLos. It's battle system is heavily based off those games, with you controlling two characters at the same time, and timing action commands in tune with their attacks.

This definitely fits the structure of the original M&L games' boss themes, but mixes it with the composer's own style. It ends up feeling similar, yet different.
    I love it!

Time to analyze the boss theme. The boss themes of the M&L games have always been some of my favorites, and this theme does a great job recreating that feel!
The boss theme, starts off strong, with intense violens, and a low brass instrument that joins partway in as well. That low brass is actually a nice touch, since low brass instruments usually don't get unutilized as much for what their worth. You definitely did them justice here.
After some bells which are totally not foreshadowing a later part of the song, everyone's favorite Japanese-esque flute returns (the main instrument of this game at this point lol). It actually works really well here, to remind the player of its existence in the other battle theme, but also sounding more intense here than how it was in the regular theme. It goes to show that not even the solemn flute is playing around here.
It then switches to an saxophone briefly to add an almost jazzy-like flare to the song, without actually being jazz. It's sudden, but works really well due to how it hits the high notes and falls back down to let the flute join back in. The saxophone hops back in after the flute plays, kind of creating this pretty cool back and forth, just like how in the battle the player and boss are going back and forth. Pretty cool actually.
Remember those bells from earlier? Well, after the saxophone suddenly starts holding longer notes with the beat, which is a really cool transition by the way, the bells swoop in start playing their own part of the theme. I actually really like the transition here, and I think it perfectly lets the bells and lower pitched synth swoop in.
Then outta the blue, a sick guitar riff jumps in. While sometimes when electric guitars jump in like this it feels out of place, in this case it works really well! It's like the normal battle theme guitar, only this time it's more strong, which makes sense since it's an intense boss theme! Overally I really like it, and it does a great job transitioning to the next major section of the song.
Now of course, like all M&L games, it wouldn't be a boss theme without a random aah intense part out of literal nowhere. I mean that in a good way of course, because while BIS and Dream Team had parts to the song that got more intense before going back to being still a boucy boss theme, Paper Jam takes the cake for going from cool boss theme to randomly shifting the most intense thing ever. I can tell that's where this took inspiration from, and it actually works really well! The guitar transitions nicely into the beginning part, allowing it to still fit in without sounding too out of place. The low opera singing and synth help add a feeling of "this is the end of the line for you!", which perfectly captures that M&L "dramatic part" of the boss theme. The church bell that plays on the first beat is also really good, however I do have a nitpick with it, which while minor and doesn't ruin the song or anything, I still want to make known.
The church bell that plays on the first beat of each measure during this part, as shown in the midi, repeats itself a total of 6 times in sets of a back and forth notes. While this does create a cool church bell effect, it also feels kind of out of place. In my opinion, I think it would be better if the church bell only rang once and just had a long reverb at the beginning of each measure, rather than having the reverb be manually made using several other notes and lasting for like two beats. I say this because in general, that kind of reverb works better in like a dramatic introduction or overworld villain theme, or just a dramatic cutscene in general. Examples of this are in the beginning of the "Birth of the Chaos Heart" track from Super Paper Mario or in the "Dark Rust Appears!" track from Pokemon Rumble Blast. As a side note, Dark Rust's battle theme from the same game is probably the only exception to being able to use the multiple reverb church bell really well because that entire theme is extremely chaotic, so the random multiple forced church bell hits actually make sense in it. This isn't me saying it's bad or anything, I'm just giving some advice to help you with some of the future songs you make using the church bell, because it's a really cool and effective instrument when used well.
Anyways, back to the random aah M&L intense theme. Besides the church bell stuff, this part actually goes really hard. I absolutely love how the piano repeats the motif the boss theme in a more solemn way, almost like it's a sign of hope within the despair of the background opera vocals and deep synth.
It then perfectly transitions back into the saxophone, with the saxophone absolutely shredding it. The flute and violens come back and combo with each other with that church bell returning once again. Unlike in the dramatic part of the song, the church bell works really well here as a supporting melody, helping add back in that dramatic intense feel of the song subtly into the intense flute and synth combo.
The guitar comes back for one last hurrah, carrying with it a dramatic finish, that helps round out the song on a satisfying conclusion, especially at the looping point, where it holds a long high note. Also, like the regular battle theme, the loop here is pretty good too, with the song jumping from the guitar right into where it started with the violens.
Overall, this is an AMAZING boss theme. It captures what made the M&L boss themes so good, and had a lot of instruments that jumped in and out throughout the song. It's actually really impressive, because in general having tons of instruments that jump back in forth with holding the melody can be really messy if not done right, but here it was done perfectly. Even with my minor rant on the church bells on the dramatic part, the song is still amazing, and absolutely fine just the way it is if you don't agree or want to leave it as is. :3

Awesome boss track! Does a wonderful job at capturing that fun vibe of M&L’s soundtrack while adding a fresh new style to it all.
The whole section starting around 2:14 is gonna be stuck in my head for weeks, it’s that good! Can’t wait to see (or hear) what comes next :]

I always love it whenever a game’s boss theme calms down from the intensity and turns into some much calmer but still really epic music, just so that the player can really think about the fight and the situation that they’re in at that moment. I think 1:31 to 2:03 is a really great example of this which is why I especially love that part of this theme.
Really great work, I really hope this game can actually become a full thing one day ^^
