Finally? This playstyle was not an option on any team he played for previously. Russ has always had the highest or second highest offensive load on the team which inherently limits you defensively. As a scorer he’s always been inefficient yet he’s also always been one of the best of all time at getting to the basket which creates opportunities for open teammates. On the lakers his open teammates were old and couldn’t shoot. Now he’s got guys that can push pace in transition and make an open jumpshot. This clippers team is far and away the best situation Russ has ever been a part of.

And props to Russ for having no ego and accepting coming off the bench. That's commendable for a former MVP, we've seen some guys getting out the league before their time for not being willing to accept a change of role like that

He’s not making 50 mil on the Clippers and he isn’t starting. If he was being paid to be your 2nd/3rd best player, you’d be hating him too. He’s making $4 mil and coming off the bench and is like your 5-6th best player.

Also he can show his skills better with these players. I don't know why they ever thought Russ would be able to play off ball with LeBron. Now that he has shown he has no ego and accepted coming off the bench for the Clippers we can see he can still play at a high level when given the keys. It's just a system that suits him much better than the Lakers did

The fact that Rus comes off the bench only proves how idiotically stacked the Clippers are. But for real, using him as a 6 man is highly tactical. He always dominates the substitutions, boosting his teams momentum while opponents loose rhythm. Plus he’s just fun to watch, gotta love the Russell hustle. Great video, he deserves the credit.

We go through this with a lot of stars. They aren’t the players they once were, then have a hard time adjusting. Then they struggle for a couple years until they learn how to be a role player. Then they either fall off or enter a sort of second prime and figure it out. One example recently is Melo. Klay is going through the transition right now for another example. It shocked me how many people gave up on Russ with his attitude and work ethic but it’s clear he’s figured out how to be a role player and a great one at that

Regarding Russ, I appreciate players who make major contributions in both ends of the floor. I think it's fair to say that he has been elite on both ends. That is AMAZING at 35 years old, and to be fair, at any age; This is the NBA, and he's dominating it on both ends.
His mental is sharp and you can see that he uses logic well on the spot both when defending and when attacking.

I am a diehard Clipper fan and like all the players on the team. I have always liked Westbrook, going back to his early days when he started playing with OKC. His downhill and push the pace type of basketball is something I love to watch. I'd like to see him finish off his career with the Clippers regardless if they win a championship or not. But of course I am hoping they can get to the Finals and win it all! Even if they just win one championship with this squad I would be happy. Too many good Clipper teams since 2012 with NO WCF appearance was frustrating to say the least.

chasing late gives opponent a false sense of security which he wants so he can unleash his athleticism and contest shots up there with no fouls.

I’ve always like Westbrook. I thought the Lakers did him dirty and essentially used him as a scapegoat. He’s still a good player albeit not the triple double machine he was in his prime.

As someone who has never been a fan of Westbrook throughout his career I’m really impressed with his ability to accept a lesser role and thrive in it. He’s completely bought into helping his team. He never use to play off ball, didn’t play much defense and IMO most of his career he cared a ton about getting his stats. This new version of him is exactly how you extend your career. He’s giving the clippers exactly what they need, is fine coming off the bench and should win 6th man of the year. I never thought he would be willing to adjust to being a bench player but he’s definitely proven me wrong. Hope he continues to thrive in this role and am def a fan of this version of his play style

Let’s be clear. Russ was only 3 rebounds away from avg a triple double before KD left. He will finish his career with less TO than LBJ with the same amount of assists. I think Westbrook is arguably the best guard we’ve ever seen. His monster game track record rivals and even eclipses Jordan’s.

whoa, slow down cowboy. i love russ, and i am so happy for him in his role with the clippers. i also think he is a great guy off the court. but the best guard we've ever seen? monster games rivals/eclipses jordan? take a deep breath.

@@laz0rama check the stats numbers don’t lie. It’s a reason he’s Jordan’s favorite player. He’s one of the few players in nba history with an excessive amount of 40 point games.

He’s been to the finals and multiple conference finals 2x scoring champ, there’s only one guard ahead of him all time in rebounds, led the league in assists 3xs. No other guards have done all those things. He’s on a tier of his own.

Russ is my favorite player and yes he does have his bad turnovers here and there, and I would rather he attack the basket than shoot the three, but he’s literally become one of the most underrated/unappreciated player in the league. The reason it didn’t work with the Lakers because they tried to make him something he’s not: An off ball shooter. LeBron should have been off ball in the post more and let Russ run point guard.
The guy has sacrificed for the Clippers and chose to go to the bench, and playing good defense. He’s always been a dangerous slasher with the ability to rebound and push the ball. Also, Russ is a great playmaker and it shows when you surround him with shooters. Real fans understand how good Russ is. It’s that simple.
