Summary:
Charles Chaplin, a convict, is given $5.00 and released from prison after having served his term. He meets a man of the church who makes him weep for his sins and while he is weeping takes the $5.00 away from him. Chaplin goes to a fruit stand and samples the fruit. When he goes to pay for it he finds his $5.00 is missing. This results in a battle with the fruit dealer, but Chaplin finally escapes. He is held up by a footpad and finds it is his former cellmate. He is inveigled into joining him in robbing a house. They put a police officer out of commission with a mallet and stack up the silverware. They then start upstairs to search the upper rooms, but are met by a young woman who implores them to leave because her mother is ill and fears the shock will kill her.

It is wonderful that these Very Early silent movies have been preserved and in such good condition.I am surprised that men like Charlie Chaplin were in good enough spirits at that time in our culture's development to sit down and write a script for a movie. People at that time had to work long hours to just to make a living . Most did not have hot and cold running water, electricity was only in the big cities, life was tough but they still had time to enjoy life.
Well if you can't get out of it get into it.
You forgot that in 1916 a World War was raging.Our young people were being drafted into the military.It was a very stressful time.Families needed some laughter in their lives.

It's not that he had a time. He was an actor, a performer so this was his way of making a living. He went through a lot before he got to American tour, and there he got a job in a movie studio. He was originaly a theatre actor. Soooo....
I was born in 93'. Never would of thought id find this entertaining. I see the value of this now. I can understand why he was as popular as he was. This is absolutely brilliant.

I was 20 when he died in 1977. My 2 grandfathers were older than him. One was born in 1879 (died 1963);and the other was born in 1886 (died 1986). Charlie Chaplin was born in 1889. When I was a kid, people born in the 1800s were a dime a dozen. When my grandparents were kids, there were people alive that remembered George Washington as President. The past isn't that far back ....
