Yep an NCO serves and protects those above AND below. It’s easy to forget about that second part and that’s what separates the good ones from the bad. Your guys always get to eat before you your guys get to rack out first before you. It’s that way for a reason rank has its privileges but it also has its responsibilities. It’s something civilians often overlook but as you said he did a pretty good job.

In my personal head canon, Rex acted like an NCO because he likely was one, earlier in the war. He's one of the few people we see in the GAR officer corps whose number starts with CT, rather than CC. This would make Rex the equivalent of an enlisted soldier who graduated from OCS. On the other hand, clones like Cody, Wolffe, Gree, and Bacara (whose numbers all started with CC) were created to be in the officer corps, and are the equivalent of officers straight out of a military academy.

Good reply. I am not sure about the last sentence. They all were fresh, but after the battle of Geonosis the learning curve changed for them. Experience trumping classroom tactics. All the clones you mentioned made it all the way through the clone wars.

Also, NCOs are also important for the development of junior officers. When I got my promotable status to E-6 (Staff Sergeant) and re-enlisted a MUCH senior officer I worked with congratulated me and told me that the people he looked up to the most for tactical and leadership advice (and lessons learned) when he was a junior officer was his Squad leaders and Platoon Sergeant (E-6s and 7s).
Theres a reason why the NCO corps is considered the backbone of any military fighting force.

From what I've read, the Russian army's lack of an effective nco corp is also the reason so many generals and commanders have been sniped, since these high value targets have to expose themselves in order to give orders to the conscripts.

The Russian Army is also still stuck in the Soviet mindset of "your soldiers are not to be trusted with any authority that could lead to a successful mutiny", so that also contributes to the communication disconnect between the military hierarchy.

Former lower enlisted army infantry here. This is so accurate. We depended more on our NCO Corp who were more like cool uncles than our officer corps, aka, our super strict dads that dont let us play video games and eat candy. The NCO corp pound for pound has more field experience in every facet than the officer corp and in the army LTs might as well be E-4s with the amount of respect they get outside of rank. We respect them bc theyre LTs not because theyre experienced and good at their jobs. Thats why you have SNCO ranks. To further blur the line between NCO, enlisted and officers.

Okay, now that I think about it, it really is rare to see a droid or stormtrooper mission where the head officer isn’t always contacting command for instructions or updates. I honestly have to say I find it ironic that clone troopers who were bred from labs were taught by Mandalorians, Jedi, and mercenaries to operate as smaller units even under the watchful eye of the Kaminoans while the Empire and the First Order trained and raised stormtroopers to stick to the chain of command like glue. It’s all supposed to be the same military in different eras, and yet it’s so different. Even if you took into account of Palpatine probably sabotaging the war in the favor of the Separatists, the Republic still operates so well despite being a society only getting used to its new military. Honestly the only military we haven’t seen in action as much in Canon is the New Republic military. If we are to go off the accounts by Resistance agents, the New Republic Defense Force sort of operates ironically like stormtroopers, sticking to the chain of command like glue. Military officers likely downplay the threat of the First Order so as not to upset politicians. Though I do wonder if Leia was smart in making the Resistance or how she made it. Given what happens in just the first few days of the war, the Resistance is the only force left to lead the fight against the First Order, but they also suffer heavy losses right away.

The clones had to be able to take on Jedi. Once they were gone, an extremely skilled army became both unnecessarily expensive and a potential threat to the Emperor. As for the other part of your comment, I'm not into fan fiction. In the EU you don't see the New Republic army turning into stormtroopers 2.0.

@@tickticktickBOOOOM While I have issues with the Sequel Trilogy and think Disney should just stick to anthology films and TV shows, is the "fan fiction" label necessary. Honestly I say the only difference between a fan fiction writer and an official writer is the fact that the latter is hired to make the story while the other does it for fun. You can see plenty of fan fiction which could actually be planted into the timeline of shows and movies without causing any trouble, perhaps even contributing. Of course some fan fiction is incompatible like crossovers for instance and the Sequel Trilogy would be considered the lazy version of fan fiction writing. I figured the trilogy was just a copy of the original movies and only recently learned the third movie was basically a copy of two Star Wars Legend novels which aren't even high on popularity. I'll like future sequel trilogy material, but Disney should be concerned that they can do TV shows and anthology films better than the main series.

@@tristankawatsuma8962 You're right. I owe fan fiction an apology for comparing it to that dumpster fire.

    • @tristankawatsuma8962
      @tristankawatsuma8962 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@tickticktickBOOOOM Well, you could call it "bad fan fiction" instead of "fan fiction". That seems like a nice compromise. Still, even with how chaotic the trilogy is, it does set things up to be interesting in the future. Once again a republic, one made by the Rebel Alliance, has failed. Once more a brutal authoritarian government has been toppled by the people. There are two ways this can go after that. Either the Resistance using the Citizen's Fleet and whatever remnants of the New Republic are left to establish a new government and try to do better or the galaxy just divides into smaller regional governments and resembles our planet. Or better yet, the Resistance tries to make a new galaxy-wide government only to be opposed by the people who are done with Republics, Empires, and any form of government meant to unite the entire galaxy. And presuming any Sith survived and-lets be honest, they survived a massacre before as did the Jedi, so I think they can do so again-they would probably help the enemies of the Resistance. They already have tried and failed to conquer the galaxy with massive Sith Empires and the Resistance would be trying to ensure their new government can't be torn apart from the inside, so honestly the best thing the Sith could do in such a situation is to prevent a new galactic government from being formed. And since the leaders of the Resistance are close friends with the newest Jedi Master, it would be safe to conclude that the Jedi Order would have close relations to the new government, though it would be something in between being a part of the government like the Old Jedi Order and being completely separate like Luke's Jedi Order. Anyways the new government and the new Jedi Order would likely have a partnership, so the Sith of course would support local regions in stopping a new galactic government from forming. In history they have usually supported Separatist movements and planets in the Outer Rim regions. A Jedi-Republic relationship is what led to the near-extinction of the Sith after all. It was with the breaking of this relationship among other things that led Palpatine to take over the galaxy. And it would be hard to discredit Rey since she just wiped out the leadership of the Sith Eternal. Even with the revelation she is Palpatine's granddaughter wouldn't work as people would remember how they reacted to the revelation of Leia's bloodline and how despite that she was both a Rebel Hero and the founder of the Resistance, so they wouldn't want to make the same mistakes as before. So anyways it would be regional and planetary governments vs the Resistance and the new galactic government they are forming with the Sith backing the former and the Jedi being tight with the latter. It would be like if the UN decided to become the world government and tried to grow in power while nations across the globe not wanting to lose status as superpowers along with their sovereignty fight back.

In Finland, all leaders receive NCO leadership training which is then followed by follow-up leadership training for those staying as NCOs and Officer training for those selected as Officers. This leadership training is respected in FInnish society and those who receive it are highly sought after in the job market.
In my case, our squad's NCOs and our Platoon leaders were both rookies and privates at the same time as us before they began their NCO training. We had completed bootcamp together and had mutual respect and trust towards them. While authority was a bit harder to enforce at base, on the field in war exercises orders were followed. This familiarity made the NCOs and Officers very much like a part of the group and the good ones were loved by all. Definitely something that would prove beneficial in a warzone.

The important of a strong NCO corps isn’t just decentralized command, but personal initiative. A big part of the doctrine for militaries with a Strong NCO corps is allowing the NCOs and their smaller units the flexibility on the battlefield. As well those small units lead by NCOs are given more free range to engage and destroy targets of opportunity or other critical targets without input from higher echelons. Essentially, a group of much smaller units making small decisions can effectively decide the course of a battle by making a decision at the right time. Higher echelons need only to put them in the right direction and let the NCOs take care of the dirty work.

An interesting concept that the clone wars series touched on a little bit:
When Alan discusses the standard trooper as a conscript, I believe that it is overlooking the aspect wherein Clone Troopers were bred to be professional soldiers (although I understand the illustration he was trying to make in using this term). This is exemplified by how the average clone trooper is seemingly capable of assuming at least Junior NCO roles in the heat of combat, part of what made the Clone Army so effective in combat. Although the Grand Army of the Republic was the "center" of the Republic's troops, there were thousands of planetary defense forces that took part in the conflict. It would have been interesting to see a large percentage of the clone army sent to these planetary defense forces to provide leadership for these units, kind of in the same way that USSOCOM sends advisors to train up national militaries. This idea was touched on in the series, with Capt Rex leading a clone contingent to train insurgents on the occupied planet of Onderan. Thanks for a great video!

My dad was a CPO (Chief Petty Officer) with a couple of years and change of combat experience and the LT pretty much let dad take over the platoon until they linked up with other elements on the backside of the bluffs at Omaha Beach. Imagine that. A platoon of Devil Dogs being led by a squid.

I disagree on the conscript issue. Conscript army is well motivated to fight for the survival of its own country. It also provides a safeguard against detached class of military families, which don't necessarily feel commonality with the common people and they can become more mercenary like and have their loyalty towards the military, not the country.
One prime example of the first is Israel and the Ukrainian army is also based on conscription. For the latter one can use the fall of Soviet Union as an example. The regular troops refused to follow their orders to fight against their own civilian population when hard line communists tried to do a coup against Gorba and his reforms.

    • @GenerationTech
      @GenerationTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

For sure there are exceptions but conscripts as a whole even the majority of IDF units are poor quality and not combat ready when compared to professional military force. The territorial defense fighters in Ukraine are woefully undertrained and under equipped, I was hanging out with an army ranger who was training some units in the field as a volunteer, he called their deployment legal murder. It doesn’t take away the heroism of their actions of course. In the modern age the use of conscripts is a desperate last measure that is both horrific and tragic. This is one of the main reasons why I’ve used this channel to highlight the plight of the Ukrainians. Yes the TDFs are very important in the fight against Russia but seeing untrained civilians fight is never a good thing

They lack adequate armor and helmets and other protective gear. Army Sos also provides tablets, drones, walkie-talkies and night vision basically anything the Ukrainians need. (Non lethal)

Honestly, the Republic would've been better served militarily, economically, and morally by using their own droid army. But, that wouldn't fit into Uncle Sheev's plans. The lack of senior non-coms really hurt the GAR. Rex was effectively the sergeant major of the 501st, but few units were so lucky as to have someone remotely his caliber. A professional non-com corps is what really separates a first rate army from a second.
By the end of the war, the surviving early clones had the experience to fill those roles, but they earned it with blood. Going into the war, they should have had veterans, whether mercenaries, Judicials, or from PDFs, serving as at least platoon sergeant on up, preferably down to squad leader. The Republic could have done this, but then Order 66 wouldn't have been practical.
As has often been noted, Jedi are about the worst people to put in charge of military units in combat, so the fact that not only were they given command, but nobody else was, really should've raised some questions.
As for the last points, the Ukrainians had the moral high ground.
    Had.
Then the lunatics started filming themselves shooting prisoners, as well as taping ethnic Russians to poles and torturing them. That stiffened the spines of the Russians, to put it mildly.
I'm disappointed Alan believes that "One man fighting for his home is worth ten conscripts" trope. First, it's not true. A corrupt and incompetent army might lose despite having a huge numerical advantage, but conscription is rarely the problem. Training is usually the crucial factor. Second, aside from a few conscript units sent in by mistake, all the Russian troops fighting are volunteers.
For that matter, the Ukrainians outnumber the Russians actually in theater. Going in, the Ukrainians even had the edge in average training and experience. Unfortunately for them, the Russians had the better generals (although their logisticians still suck, as is tradition). If the Ukrainian quick reaction force hadn't retaken the airport in Kiev immediately, or the Russian forces that were supposed to encircle and bypass Kharkiv hadn't screwed up by the numbers, the war would be over by now.

This will be offtopic, but since you touched it by the end of the video, I gonna say it. I hope you will react to it
Its funny how people (mainly US and west EU) call me a racist and xenophope for few years, because of distrust and general opinion on Russians that I have for 20 years.
Funny is also that, what I foretold 10 years ago, really happened. In other words Russians attacked other country where they even kill civilians. It only shows that Russia hasnt changed since 1917, where human life didnt mean a bit for them.
For context, only a country that has been occupied by Russia/USSR knows, what the Russians are truely capable of, because those citizens lived through Russians tyrany and terror.
Thats why countries like Poland or Czech republic truely try to help Ukraine, because like Ukraine in past, they know what the Red terror is like. Unlike the west europe that either talks or just watches.
From what I have written you can easily tell that I am from one of those countries that went through Red terror. Before you start judging, I also have to say this.
Even though 30 years ago my country got rid of russians and their communist puppets, there are still echos of that terror. I dont mean buildings, but in culture, human behavior and society. For example, in the behavior, people are more agressive and backstabing then they used to. Because during the Red terror here neighbor was spying on another neighbor and was secretly reporting it to the police. All those things made people bitter, and that bitterness is now even passed down on another generation.

Basically America is a Democratic Republic meaning we elect our reps. While the Grand Republic was basically the same thing on a galactic scale, so instead of electing governing rep; It was rather a planetary rep.
