I want to point this out, so folks don't confuse the Schuylkill River with a FISH TANK. Lots of folks usually say "Oh...don't clean your fish tank with soap!!!" Catfish bite on soap because of the fatty acids it contains! Catfish love it. Thats why they bite on it! Some of the disadvantages are that it's very soft! You learn something new everyday! Tight lines!
I tried this myself around a year ago. I I I believed the answer would be yes ! The main concept behind the fishing with soap is that older, cheaper soaps are made with fats from animals, which made certain types of soaps a potential fish bait. Muddy river cat fishing gave me the idea, and just like him, I struggled to catch a fish. I was very shocked! Tight lines Leo!
soap absolutely works and isn't harmful to the environment because a lot of soaps stuck to the originality of use animal fats as a base. the scent and oils also help to attract the fish. another great video Leo. Thank you
Great vid, we used to fish with ivory soap on the upper Mississippi River back in the 70s worked great. Keep up the good works! Oh and soap works because it's mainly fat that has been homogenized so it will dissolve in water, making it a self-chumming bait, it lays a scent trail attractant downstream for as long as the chunk is on the hook leading the fish straight to the hook....sorry had to repost tried new editor without much luck !
Yes! The Irish Spring soap works. It's because one of the ingredients is animal fat or tallow. My grandfather used to use soap as catfish bait in his hoop nets in Louisiana. I never knew why it worked. Now I do. Thanks and keep up the good work!
Fishing with Irish Spring works well while fishing for catfish because the soap (solute) creates a solution with the help of the water (solvent). This causes the soap to dissolve and the soap components are mixed around in the water. Because one of the main components of Irish Spring Soap is beef fat or beef tallow, the catfish are attracted to the bait, and hopefully, as you saw in the video, bite on the soap. Very informative video Leo. Tight lines!
The irish spring soap works because it is softer wich makes it easier to hook on but is more condensed so when it hits the water it doesn't fall apart right away or dissolve as quickly
Great video Leo! I'm going to try it myself. I don't think a little soap in the water is going to hurt anything. Can it hurt a fish? Probably not as much as what else is in that river.
It depends on the fat content of the soap, but YES it does work! It works because it dissolves slowly in water and leaves a trail for catfish to follow back to the bait. You proved it to be true by catching fish on it in right there in PA.
Not sure why that Irish Spring soap works, but if it is anything like Ivory soap, then it works because it is made with animal fats and gives off a scent trail. Great vid
And the soap does work because of the scent trail it gives off. It actually is used a lot by anglers that need to stay cheap. Tight lines and great vids dude
i think the soap will work because of its very strong scent and flashy whitish color could imitate a dead fish. also the oils and fats that are used to keep the bar of soap together help attracts the catfish by scent
Irish Spring Soap does work due to the fact that the animal fats in the soap attract the catfish. Soap in particular only attracts catfish and scares off other fish from the scent. I really likw that it is cheap and easy to use without any mess. Another great video!
Yes soap works because when it dissolves and the animal fat in the soap gets into the water and because a scent for the fish. Great video keep up the great work!!
I have used Ivory soap with some success. Never tried Irish Spring, I had an allergic reaction to it, but guess it would be OK for bait. We would melt the Ivory and add different scents and ingredients to it. Let it cool and reform and then cut it up. Soaps are usually the bait of choice for trot lines in the South, because the bait put out scent over a long period of time. We can't use trot lines in California, so we used it as a straight hook bait.
I think the soap works ! Another great video leo!! It works because the fish inhaled it ..they didnt just bite it...plus as it disolves it leaves a greasy substance around it atracting fish ! Nice work leo ;)
Yes soap does work with catching cat fish because of a solute (Irish spring soap) turned into a solution (schuylkill river water) with the help of a solvent (components of soap+water) and solution (beef fat (tallow)+ sodium hydroxide (lye)+water)
You caught some so it must work. Probably the unusual scent attracts them or the fish want to smell better , like a Irish spring morning As the soap dissolves dispersing smell and fat in the water The sodium tallowate is crucial
It does work surprisingly, I think it is because the soap dissolves in the water and makes sort of a chum, kinda like packbait for carp that Luke from catfish and carp uses
I have never tried using soap myself, but it makes sense. I guess the fish are attracted to the scent and color put out by the soap. Might have to try it next time I go fishing.
I am Brazilian, too. Southern Brazil. here we have a couple native catfish species. Both the mandi and the jundiá are tipically fished with soap. I believe it's the fat in it, probably, what atract them. And, man, it does atract those fishes...
I am a new beginner. I would've never thought about using soap for fishing at all because it does not make sense for me. But since you brought this up in this video, I guess I should revise my opinion.
Can't believe soap works. The fat chum effect makes sense but you'd think the irish spring scent would turn them off. I suppose watching the video the night crawler did better. Looks like fun. Have you tried any of catfish and carps homemade recipies? I plan to try the chicken, strawberry jello and garlic.
I think it might work for a little time before it dissolves or just plain falls off the hook when fish hit it but it does have a scent so it might work.
I really like how you explained the soap ingredients because at first I wouldve said it doesnt work since it's mostly alkaline. After I saw the fats and acids it made more sense because catfish senses blood and etc which is alkaline/nuetral but if you think about it, when it rots the acids gets released. So the soap is a perfect mixture but to see if it would catch bigger fish, you can try to make a fish imitation and see the results.
Yes! The Irish Spring Soap did work because when it dissolved, animal fat was in the solution, which catfish love. The solute (the Irish Spring Soap) turns into a solution (beef fat, Sodium Hydroxide [lye] and water) with the help of the solvent (the Schuylkill River). This video was very interesting! I certainly learned something new.
For me Irish Spring soap works well. It will catch catfish. Irish Spring soap tend to work best. Again, save the good stuff for yourself. But, in a pinch, even the cheapest soap will work for catfish bait.
Cat fishing with soap works because of the fatty acids in the soap and because the soap dissolves in water creating a scent that attracts them! Definitely very cool video Ill be trying this soon!
Yes because when it dissolves little particles fall off and leave a scent which is why powerbait works so well because it sticks If you choose me it would mean the world to me
I have used the pink laundry Zote Soap .......its soft, goes on the hook . It works on my trotline and limb lines. Channel catfish are the only catfish i caught with it.
Irish Spring Soap is good catfish bait for a few reasons. first of all, we saw in the video that it works. also, soap is basic, meaning that the pH is over 7. the optimum pH for river water is 7.4 (also over 7). additionally, soap is soft so it can be sucked in by catfish and other bottom feeding fish (there isnt much chewing required). additionally, if the soap is soft enough, it can be molded around the hook. i really loved your idea to use soap in this video
Irish spring soap works because channel catfish have a good sense of smell and Irish soap has an amazing scent which attracts catfish carp maybe other fish so yes Irish spring soap can work for catfish
Yes the soap works. It catches fish. That's what matters. It works because of the fat in the soap dissolves when it hits the water and leaves a scent trail that attracts catfish., The only problem is that you will have to re-bait it a lot because the soap dissolves in the water. Tight lines Leo, another great vid
Irish spring soap does work for cat fish because of dissolution a solute turns into a solution with the help of a solvent and from what EPF said soap has animal fat in it so catfish love it
The soap does work which is so cool, this happens because when the soap hits the water it makes a scent that the fish wants to eat, so they did. Great vid and I love the intros
Hey Leo! I just saw in the description that you filmed this on my birthday! The video was great and served as a great gift! Thank you for the great content. Tight lines!
Yes, the soap works to catch catfish, because of the sodium tallow(animal fat). Just came across your channel today. Love the videos. Keep up the great work.
I’m gonna say yes! I’ve seen catfish eat some weird things, and the soap will give out a smell that the catfish might like! If not then at least you’ll be cleaning up the river! Can’t wait to watch the video!
Nice!! Need to try this! Soap is made from fats, no? Thats why cat fish are attracted to it. Plus slow dissolving with scent. Money boi! That young cat fish doe.
Your supposed to boil a water and drop a bunch of soap in and that will break down and once it solidifies it will not crumble or you can put it in ice cube trays with hooks already in then and just snap swivel connect them to your line
Soap works well for catfish because of the fatty acids it releases as it dissolves. Big fan your channel and it was cool to see catfish caught on baits I️ wouldn’t normally think of.
Soap does work! It may take a little while before you get a bite but it works! The fatty acids in the soup are being spread through the water as the soup dissolved. So the “Soup chum” would attract the fish.
I think it is good because of the bubbles and smell. The bubbles attract slight attention enough toake the fish come over and investigate while the smell convinces them to eat it
I think it depends on the soap wether it works or not. Some soaps dissolve very fast and break easily. Others are stronger and their scent and presentation attract the catfish.
hey leo, nice video. you caught three species of fish, white crappie, green sunfish, and blue gill. however, you also caught a hybrid fish if that also counts
In my country we make our own soap from pig's fat. If any soap is made of fat, then yes, fish will eat it. The good thing about fishing with soap in a dirty river is that you clean the river with the soap! :)
Yes it does work. Dissolution: The solute (the soap) turns into a solution with a solvent (water) and the soap has animal fat in it. Apparently catfish like to eat animal fat. Btw awesome photos in the Philly Voice!
I also am envious of you. I was fishing last weekend and was heading to my second destination and someone hit the side of my car totaling my car and destroying my fishing poles. Now I can't fish, but still find time to watch your' and everyone else's videos
Using bar soap works because it has tallow (animal fat) in it. When the soap contacts the water the fat starts to dissolve, which then attracts the catfish
Yes it does work, the scent receptors that they rely on are very strong, they can’t see very well so since the sight sense isn’t very strong they use their sent sense, since soap is very strong in scent and the oder’s release in the water the catfish smell that and perceive it as food so by the time they get to it they taste it, then you set the hook and you got yourself a catfish.
Interesting to see that the soap actually worked. It makes sense though, with the animal fat that is used in it... but I remember on river monsters Jeremy went to like Africa I think and all they use for fishing is a long line with a hundred hooks and soap on each hook. Great video, and I'm sure those fish you caught have never seen soap before, but I'm sure they have seen all the other store bought baits lol
To my surprise Irish Spring Soap work a charm for catfish and the reason for this as you said was the animal fats being dispersed through the water and attracting those hungry catfish :)
I live in Ontario Canada and it is already freezing! No ice yet but very cold. I keep getting the itch to go out and catch some fish but never any luck. Any tips on winter fishing cold open water. (Ex: what lures/bait to use) ps. You should come to Canada next summer.
Yes fishing with soap does work because catfish use their whiskers and soap smells strong so the catfish will smell it and eat it. Keep doing what you are doing I really love your videos and I’m trying to become a fishing TH-camr to
Yes the soap catches fish because It disolves and when it desolves the animal fat attracts the catfish . The Irish spring soap is a solute that turns into a solution with the help of a solvent the solvent being the Schuylkill River water . Tight Lines !
Before watching, I’m going to guess that soap does indeed work for catfish. I’ve learned that catfish attack bait based on their smell, and I’m sure the soap leaves a very distinct scent in the water.
The soap works because of the fatty acids in it. The catfish barbs hone in on that stuff. Also, the actual soap scent probably isn't super attractive, but I bet it makes the fish curious enough to nibble.
It works because of the animal fat content, and the fact that it forms a solution that diffuses through the water so the catfish can smell it. As someone who makes their own soap sometimes, I thought most of the soap out there was just detergent. Some of the actual soap actual uses plant based fat, too (which is how I usually do it with olive and coconut oils) So you've got to check your soap to make sure it is one that uses animal fat (maybe? I don't know if the plant based fats would work. It is still fat). If I ever get around to making some more tallow based soap, I'll send some to you to try out.
I actually learned something today, I'm impressed leo. Definitely worked because the release of fatty acids. Also haven't heard the word "Solvent" since Highschool 😂
Of course the soap will work mainly because of the way many soaps are made today. Today, soaps are made from fats and oils. Solid fats like beef fat , or pork fat which are used to form bars of soap that stay hard and start dissolving as the more time it spends on the water.
Daaamn, chunky thicc catfish been hitting the Sodium tallowate in it's spare time ;D I think you caught a Sodium tallowate withdrawal cat who was like "nah, man. I gotta keep my shape, so I'll take the nightcrawler today" XD
You got some weird fish over there. At least you wont go home smelling bad. Lol. I was going to say you must be trying to clean the water. Lol. Great video. I didn't think it would work, cause Kris Flores tried it and he had no luck.
You should do a video using different food to catch fish. Like carrots, celery, potatoes, peas, pickles. Cucumber, grapes, orange, apples, an others to see what works.
It worked! Because the solute (soap) turned into a solution with the help of a solvent (Schuylkill river water) Sodium Tallowate in the soap is animal fat which Catfish Love. Great idea to use soap for bait as in my experience Catfish are extremely smelly fish. If you are using soap as bait you can wash your hands after catching them.
It kind of worked, it smells good and it has a strong smell but catfish really like the bad stench. The soap started to dissolve after fish started to hit it.
Soap indeed works because of the animal fat in the soap. Catfish love fat. I wouldn’t say it’s a disadvantage that it disintegrates over time because it’s so cheap. I’m sure the scent brings the fish in and it’s nice that it won’t hurt the fish. Thanks for the videos EPF

EDIT: I see some people very very concerned about the consequences that my small pieces of SOAP can bring to the local wildlife and environment, which is GOOD! However, folks, please do some research before spreading wrongful information!!!
*About the FISH:* every chemically made product has a certain level of toxicity to living organisms and the environment. Ultimately, it all depends on the amount of it that you put in the water. The negative effects of the small pieces of soap that I used in this video are insignificant! In nutrition, there are threshold levels for intoxication and toxicity. And I guarantee you that the amount of soap used in the video will not bring the fish any harm AT ALL. I am intoxicating myself more than I intoxicated those fish, since I go to Burger King once a week for my "heart attack" meal full of cholesterol.
*About the ENVIRONMENT:* from EPA data, 1 oz. of biodegradable soap needs to be diluted in 20,000 ounces of water for it to be safe to the environment and the living organisms in it. 20,000 oz = ~156 Gallons = ~592 Liters. I want to point this out, so folks don't confuse the Schuylkill River with a FISH TANK. Lots of folks usually say "Oh...don't clean your fish tank with soap!!!" There is a reason for that -- soap is anti-bacterial, and a fish tank can easily be LESS than 156 gallons. Thus, the soap will be TOO CONCENTRATED and be bad for the fish in it (break of the nitrogen cycle, and slime coat in fish). As a side comparison, lawn products and chemicals flushed down the toilet bring WAY WAY more impact than my poor soap in this video! The run off water from those chemically treated lawns + chemicals flushed down the restrooms is what brings algae blooms and summer kills each and every year! Think about it.
Extreme Philly Fishing soapy fisherman.
the soap will work because catfish are dirty and they need to clean themselves ;)
cool article, epf catching media attention. :D
nice i suggested soap a while back
Extreme Philly Fishing wwwwwhhhhhaaaaaatttttt sssssuuuuupppp
Well that’s one way to try to clean up the Schuylkill river.....
MN Fishing XD
Hayden Funk I
Hayden Funk You’re going to need much more soap.
I guess the soap does work. wow I was shocked.
another great video
Ryan Richardson Never watched River monsters ?
Soap is very efective lots of people use it, plus they make catfish soap now made souly for fishing
Catfish bite on soap because of the fatty acids it contains! Catfish love it. Thats why they bite on it! Some of the disadvantages are that it's very soft! You learn something new everyday! Tight lines!

The soap worked because it slowly releases its oils into the water around it witch brings the fish in and keeps them around. It also makes good chum.
Yes it does work! Surprising! I think it may work because of the smell of the soap and the fish may also be attracted to the bubbles! :)
I am a new beginner. I would've never thought about using soap for fishing at all because it does not make sense for me. But since you brought this up in this video, I guess I should revise my opinion.

It looks like Irish Spring works fine. I wash with Ivory bars and wonder if there's enough Sodium Tallowate to make it worth a try.
I think it might work for a little time before it dissolves or just plain falls off the hook when fish hit it but it does have a scent so it might work.
Yes it does because it slowly fizzles and dissolves and adds a smell to the water which catfish reli on smell to hunt so it attracts them to it
The average fishermen Technically not smell, but flavor.Catfish skin is COVERED in taste buds. It's like they're a giant swimming tongue.

Great video! Can not believe the soap work, but nothing beats the nightcrawlers.
Yes because the soap dissolves releasing the scent into the water and since catfish feed primarly
on scent they can smell it and find it
The soap works because of the fatty acids in it.
Also haven't heard the word "Solvent" since Highschool 😂
wow that's awesome! It actually works! I'm pretty sure it works because of the animal fat if I heard you correctly! Love the vids Leo!
Of course the soap will work mainly because of the way many soaps are made today. Today, soaps are made from fats and oils. Solid fats like beef fat , or pork fat which are used to form bars of soap that stay hard and start dissolving as the more time it spends on the water.
Daaamn, chunky thicc catfish been hitting the Sodium tallowate in it's spare time ;D
I think you caught a Sodium tallowate withdrawal cat who was like "nah, man. I gotta keep my shape, so I'll take the nightcrawler today" XD
You could try spam.
It's a classic bait in Europe... mostly for Barbel and Carp but it caught me some nice cats, eels and chubs too.
You got some weird fish over there. At least you wont go home smelling bad. Lol. I was going to say you must be trying to clean the water. Lol. Great video. I didn't think it would work, cause Kris Flores tried it and he had no luck.
Yes because catfish are bottom feeders and eat based off smell so when they smell the soap it indicates food and they eat it.
Very impressive Leo ...the soap prevails and catches some catfish very cool
You should do a video using different food to catch fish. Like carrots, celery, potatoes, peas, pickles. Cucumber, grapes, orange, apples, an others to see what works.
It worked! Because the solute (soap) turned into a solution with the help of a solvent (Schuylkill river water) Sodium Tallowate in the soap is animal fat which Catfish Love.
Great idea to use soap for bait as in my experience Catfish are extremely smelly fish. If you are using soap as bait you can wash your hands after catching them.
I think it would work because, where i live the fish will eat any thing. i could stick my finger in the water and they will go after it. Nice video
Although it dissolves catfish use smell for hunting and that’s something the soap will put off well
The soap works! For sure! The fatty acids that make up the soap are like a PB&J for the Catfish!
Yes, the Irish spring soap does work on catfish. The animal fat dissolves and attracts catfish with the scent.
And i am a long time Fan My Dude
It kind of worked, it smells good and it has a strong smell but catfish really like the bad stench. The soap started to dissolve after fish started to hit it.
Yes because the Irish cats love scents and the soap spreads a smell like chum.
Love you epf
Soap indeed works because of the animal fat in the soap. Catfish love fat. I wouldn’t say it’s a disadvantage that it disintegrates over time because it’s so cheap. I’m sure the scent brings the fish in and it’s nice that it won’t hurt the fish. Thanks for the videos EPF
Awesome video. Please try to use chunks of hotdogs for bait next!
I appreciate the suggestion! Thanks for sharing.
Yes it works the smell when released into the water attracts the fish.
