  • Dick Boak of the Martin Guitar Company visiting Dan Erlewine's guitar repair shop. The conversation is about pre-war Martin tenor guitars, and Dick really knows this subject. From the free Trade Secrets newsletter at stewmac.com

I had a chance to go to the bar with Dick Boak after taking a tour of the Martin factory in Nazareth. He was the nicest guy you could meet, and happy to talk about any aspect guitars. This was in 1990s around the time when Taylor Guitars was fast becoming serious competition to Martin, and Martin in turn were starting to consider e.g. whether or not to employ CNC machines. Dick was completely open about this and was a really interesting man to talk to - it was a privilege.

3:57 The Shorter Scale Length lends itself to a Higher pitch, you'll need heavier Gauge Strings if you want to use a Lower Tuning (John Pearse 450 Strings for GDAE Tuning which will mellow it out).

Dick, The information on the little design taken from martin ukulele at the bottom of the bout, came from the Portuguese Braginha , Cavaqhino, from Madeira Islands when the Portuguese field working moved to Hawaii , bring the Instruments that later became the Ukulele. Thanks for showing the Tenor guitars and there history.

The Tenor Guitar is a Tenor Banjo Neck on a Guitar body making it in fact a Hybrid instrument. They're still popular today due to their versatility

Outstanding info. Thanks for sharing this. Also, kudos for noting the differences in smells. I thought I was only one of the crazy few who smelled guitars.

A pendalogue is a type of glass cut. Often on crystal chandelier pendents. It can have that pointed shape just like at the end of the Gibson fingerboard.

2:23 The Tenor Guitar has the same tuning as a Tenor Banjo but it sounds different

With Adirondack it didn't seem to me the grain count. Many early Martins had a wide grain count and they sounded fantastic.

Perfect for playing Jazz. John Pearse #450 Strings for GDAE Tuning would give you a pretty mellow Jazz tone.

I googled "pendalog" and found it defined as "the source of the lively spring".

Hi guys , I'm currently making a tenor guitar with no real plans - well I had one for a body but not for the neck I have made the body and braced it and it's 95% complete. I made the body to be a 23inch scale and now I'm making the neck I just have a problem I can't work out the fret positions. should I be using the stewartmacdonald banjo or guitar fret calculator? I notice the 14th fret butts the guitar when I have calculated the 12th does... what length would a tenor guitar neck be? Thanks John.

Just type 23" and the number of frets you have: www.stewmac.com/FretCalculator

      @johnog8358 8 ปีที่แล้ว

+ThisLoveIsSweet thanks but , that's what I was doing. but my 12th fret is always at the butt of the guitar not sure how they got 14th. is that just down to the shape of the body? I based mine on a dreadnought, I might be over thinking this just thought I would ask and make sure I don't ruin it... it was an expensive fretboard blank...

To make a 14-fret tenor guitar, you would have to adjust the bridge location on the body. A 12-fret guitar meets the body at the 12th fret. Either way, the scale remains 23", meaning the distance from the nut to the saddle is 23" and the distance from the nut (or saddle) to the 12th fret is 12.5". The folks at StewMac could help if you still have questions. service@stewmac.com hope that helps. Have fun.

+ThisLoveIsSweet thanks. I understand now haha. I'll leave the bridge where it is, as It's X braced and I added a strengthening plate on the under side of the bridge so it would probably sound best where it is, I'll know for the next one to bring it a bit higher up. Thanks again!

Use 23" scale best, use a full size guitar body and custom make neck sound much thicker Rich,, and tune mandolin octive EADG gives full 6 string tuning in 4 strings less the last 3 notes low G flat,F,E nothing hardly played on last 3 notes anyway.

String gauges... and intonation... if you want a higher tension... just swap gauges.

I would replace the Banjo tuners w/ Right Angle Guitar Style Tuners cause they're easier to turn & also the Paddle Shaped Headstock means they don't look out of place anyhow.

no need of it... I have a OT18 from 1929 and the original Grover banjo tuners still work wonderful

@@luischirinog3624 True but YMMV. The Paddle Shaped Headstock means Right Angle Guitar Machine Heads could work too.
