Can also recommend his recording of the Elgar cello concerto transcribed for viola, one of the few people who can make it work in that version - and it really does.
Hauntingly beautiful. The first time I’ve heard the viola sound this good - astonishing ! Did anyone know what he’s playing on - the instrument is clearly superb.
That's right, Tim plays a viola made by Peregrino di Zanetto of Brescia c.1565-75 on loan from a generous patron of Beare's International Violin Society.
A very lovely crisp viola with that mature yet hollow"woodblock-y" sound! I love it. The A string seems to have tamed a lot since I last hear it. Last time I heard it, it was "shrill city" and sounded like a chainsaw :O A performer like Ridout deserves a great viola that is even-across-the-strings.
Finding a great viola is very difficult. Almost all violas sound harsh and nasal on the A string. My viola sound great and its be a modern Chicago maker. I still wish I could find a gut like thicker A string. Violist should try a slightly thinner C string to maker the low C sound not so dull and wolffie and covered. PIANO IS TOOOOO LOUD!
The balance is fine as far as I can tell. It is Viola centred and having played with piano many times , a realistic aural experience. Are you a Violinist ?
19:41 Rubinstein: Viola Sonata in F minor, op 49
This guy is one of the best viola players of our century. Great duo, many thanx!
Ye, he is amazing

Terrific performances from both -- passionate, colourful, characterful.
I'm listening to these Albumblätter for the very first time and he made me like them instantly.

Beautiful, just beautiful.
Merci de nous faire écouter ces œuvres peu familières , même pour un altiste amateur passionné , et avec tel talent !
I saw Timothy at Eastmann a few months ago, what a wonderful violist!!

Fine playing and musicianship. What is the Instrument? Brescian?

It seems he’s using dominant strings, does anyone can corroborate it?
Its actually, A, D and G RONDO strings and a C spirocore
