Wye & Usk Foundation Fishery Reviews - PLUS Update on Chainbridge - June 2022

  • In this video I take a look back at the various fisheries I went to on my recent trip and my experiences of beats booked via the Wye & Usk Foundation. Plus, I made a huge mistake - it turns out that I didn't fish on Chainbridge at all, in fact I misread the beat map and ended up fishing in completely the wrong place. So out of fairness to the fishery owner I removed that video and corrected the reviews.
Check out my videos of the fisheries discussed in this video via my playlists:

Hi Chris. I've only fished two beats on the Wye a few years ago - Goodrich Court and Whitney. Goodrich was nice fly water but Whitney more suited to bait fishing (spinning) which I'm not a fan of. For prior reasons given I wouldn't pay good money to fish the Wye again. Given the right conditions the Border Esk can provide good salmon fishing - the Burnfoot beat isn't overly expensive and produces a lot of fish albeit a good number are caught on a shrimp under a float - but there is also some good fly water. From August onwards given water the other Solway rivers - Annan, Nith and Eden offer good value fishing with a reasonable prospect of a fish. Dalswinton on the Nith and Hoddom and Halleaths on the Annan spring to mind. Carlisle AA on the Eden have miles of the lower Eden with membership available which if you took would enable you to fish it on a regular basis and over time get to know the beat which IMO is half the battle in salmon fishing. Cheers Phil

I couldn't agree more. If only i lived just a little closer than the arse end of Cornwall I might get to know these rivers better 🤣. I fished the Nith at Dalswinton recently but will take a look at your suggestions for my next trip in September. All the best. Chris

Chris, I would give up on the R.Wye for all the reasons given in the other comments. It's a tragic situation to be in for once the finest salmon river in England.
For a better chance these days try the Yorkshire rivers: N.Esk and Ure for preference. I am most familiar with the latter and it is both productive and reasonably priced. But it is mainly a backend river though. Other English suggestions are to try the R.Tyne (North & South), R.Eden in Cumbria, and down south do not overlook the R.Avon, Itchen and Frome. I tried the Tamar in 2022 but there was no water so can't give a proper opinion atm.
Very happy to meet up if mutually convenient!

Hi Chris. If you're back on the Wye this coming season it might be worth you joining the Wye Salmon Association. They have a few beats on the river that, following your £10 joining fee, cost absolutely nothing. Limited to various days of the week. Also worth noting that the Wye is currently in shocking condition with the usual culprits. The WSA support environmental initiatives, so is a good cause.

Hi Kurt, thanks I did look at the WSA last year when I met a fisherman at Moccas Fishery ( i think that was the name) but tbh I am keen to go back to Scotland and maybe Ireland this year.

The Wye is not in good shape this past few years but even in good seasons about half the salmon catch comes from downstream of Monmouth and in a typical season half of those are caught from the Wyesham beat at Monmouth. So even if it costs a bit more, in terms of your chances of catching a salmon it is better to try Wyesham than anywhere else. Upper Bigsweir and Cadora are on opposite banks about six miles downstream of Wyesham and get fish off the tide. Wye & Usk Foundation seem to solely concerned with generating revenue and the only concession is a refund for a wash off.

Hi Paul, thanks everyone seems to be championing Wyesham, I will look at it again for next season.

Salmon fishing can be tough but as your subscribers all tell you stick at it and you will be rewarded. Trying to learn a lot of beats on a lot of rivers and how they fish in different conditions can take a lifetime. I'd suggest that whichever salmon river you fish next hire a ghille or fish with someone who knows the water. Optimise your chances of hooking a salmon.

You know what I would like to see Chris. I want to see salmon fishing for blokes like me who can’t afford the big four salmon rivers. Why don’t you fish all the smaller rivers like the Till, findhorn, Garry. I would love to see you find the best of those rivers to try.

Most of the W&U waters on the Wye revert back to barbel/coarse fisheries on June 16th, so in effect the salmon season on a lot of beats on the Wye is only for about 4 months! Work out the economics. One salmon angler fishing a beat for one day a week, probably the only angler fishing that beat in a week, £50. 4 barbel bashers fishing the same beat for a day, £27.50 each. Then factor in that some fisheries may be booked up for coarse fishing for their maximum several days per week....Add to that the lack of salmon and constant canoe traffic and you have your answer. There are very few Wye fisheries that operate purely as salmon fisheries during the season. Some are salmon fishing only from the start of the season until 16th June. Salmon fishing the Wye, indeed salmon fishing in general is a lottery, you have to be there when the fish are there, water conditions are right and then you have to try and catch them! The Wye isn't what it used to be and some people doubt it ever will be. Back in the day nearly the whole of the Wye was a salmon fishery with managed beats and the like. The Wye is not Scotland and, IMHO should not be compared. It may have been 50 odd years ago but, alas those days have long gone together with the fish.....Have a look at the WSA, Wye Salmon Association. They, again, in my opinion are doing more than the W&U to help the river and it's fishing. They also have some free fishing for members. Tight lines.

Thanks Graham, i never considered the coarse fishing tickets at all. That's great information and something to consider for the future. I met a guy at Moccas Fishery who mentioned the WSA but completely forgot about them until you reminded me, so I will be looking them up tonight! Thanks for taking the time to comment so indepth and thanks for your support! Chris
