      Just a simple way to make the acrylic a bit thinner in the bends. The wide you make the cut, the more you can bend.

      Diamond coated hole saw for glass, wood hole saw for acrylic. I have a video for the glass, next week i will cover acrylic again.

    I know you like clear bottom tanks. How do address the accumulation of debris and such on the bottom when you only use a weir? Do you only rely on a vacuum? And what do you suggest for a clean look?

    • @ItsAlleged
      @ItsAlleged 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe his answer to that is a good flow rate on the pump. If you have enough circulation there isn't anything building up on the bottom.

  • @cripnikka86
    @cripnikka86 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know this is a 5 years old video but can you confirm that acrylic won't bond well with glass? And I also read in the forum that acrylic absorb water overtime and it will expand; ripping apart the glue / silicone and creating some leak. Can you or anyone confirm this?

    Hi Joey I have a few questions and if you can I would appreciate a reply.
    I am currently building a 400 liter aquarium, 160x50x50 cm with 10 cm brace on the top and one brace in the middle for additional strength. Made with 10 mm glass. Do you know if Ceresit CS 23 silicone is good enough for that aquarium? That is the only fish safe glass silicone I can get where I live.
    Will it help to add "L profile" aluminium as a trim all over the aquarium making it hold better? (I am scared it might come apart and that will maybe add more strength, or is that a bad idea)
    I noticed you are building mostly acrylic aquariums recently for yourself. Is it cheaper for you or you simply like it better over glass for some reason?
    Do you recommend adding styrofoam under the tank to even out pressure if a stand has little irregularities?
    And lastly, is it better to have dark filter with no light in it or is it ok for it to be transparent? What is better for beneficial bacteria to live in?
    Sorry for questions you probably answered in your other videos, I am currently rewatching them all for more info, and sorry for not so good English.
    Thank you for your reply.

    would you recommend using an overflow like this or the smaller box style? I can't decide whether to build an overflow that runs from the bottom to the top of the tank or if one of the off the shelf overflow boxes will work. Need any input I can get. Thanks!

    How can I calculate how much flow I need? How does it help with constant height with evaporation?

    • @ItsAlleged
      @ItsAlleged 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally 5-10 times the volume of the tank per hour as far as flow goes.

    • @ItsAlleged
      @ItsAlleged 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Having an overflow-sump setup means that the sump (located under the tank) constantly provides water to the display tank. This fills it to about half way up the weir, where it overflows back into the sump at the same rate it is coming in the tank. This height will always be at that same level, unless the sump is dry. Evaporation still happens, but only the water level in the sump changes.

    HEY one question.
    My aquarium is made out of glass and its reallllyyy heavy.
    200x60x60
    I see you all work with acryl glass, well i buyed this aswell to try out but not any silicone glue holds its togeder its like its slips off the surface of the acryl.
    what du you use in your video? diffrent type of Acryl?

    • @Nick-fw5uj
      @Nick-fw5uj 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      As long their is no pressure pushing it off the glass it is fine. If the pressure pushes the acrylic away from the glass you need to use normal glass

  • @notoriousme8199

    hey bro ..i want to ask one question out of this video... Can I put betta , cichlid and cory catfish together in a same tank???? answer if you know😕

    • @northerniggy8261
      @northerniggy8261 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Betta & Cory catfish are a great combo... but Cichilds and Bettas are not. Bettas are slow swimmers and all it will take is one aggressive Cichlid and its over for the Betta. Cichlids need larger and tougher tank mates in my opinion.

    • @remingtonblaine4696
      @remingtonblaine4696 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cichlids are generally more agressive and will pick on other passive fish like the betta and Corry. Berta's only fight against males or other similar fish because they feel threatened and want to be the dominant male. Females can sometimes be very peaceful. Corrys will stay on bottom minding their own business. Bettas like a temp of 80, corrys like low ph and cichlids generally like a high ph. Research each fish individually and see if they require similar conditions. Then you can search them in pairs to see if they get along togeather. Also corrys like to be in groups of 10+ but 4 should be ok.

    I plan to take this design using a small trash can in my 55gal aquarium my cichlids are large and often break my equipment I thought this would be a cheap and less labor intensive idea for those of you with less time money tools and materials I hope it works out for me and anyone who wants to try it this way only concern I have is if the heater could melt the plastic and if putting large rocks in the bottom to sink it would take up too much room and I wont be able to fit all equipment

    • @wereboarder2009
      @wereboarder2009 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      acrylic doesn't bond to silicone at all so that isn't really an option sadly.

    • @erick6102
      @erick6102 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +wereboarder2009 silicone can work for acrylic in some situations. You have to sand the heck out of the edges you want to bond AND lay the silicone down thick. It doesn't look good for a display tank cause the sanding scratches the surface so bad. It won't be a really strong bond either-not for tank building, but it works for putting in baffles in an acrylic sump which is what I did. I wanted to be able to move the baffles if I decided to redesign the sump for any reason.

    • @rickztah
      @rickztah 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +wereboarder2009 I don't particularly agree. while we all know that acrylic doesn't bond well with silicone, an inside weir has pressure being placed passively instead of against it as an outside overflow box might. silicone would do the job and it does in a large majority of "reef ready" systems as well as diy sold weirs on glass tanks. on an acrylic tank, it only makes sense to weld it, but on glass, it is an option. it isn't as clean and you should sand, but it isn't impossible
