I'd blame the federal governments of the countries they sell these in before I blame Nissan. The reason most of these manufacturers fail is because they have to keep trying to meet unrealistic and constantly worsening emissions standards. It could be that Nissan quite literally couldn't _afford_ to ditch the CVT for the whole duration they'd had it. They don't have hybrids in the USA- haven't for a long time- and the ones they did were unreliable. I think it's a combo. Governments, and Nissan's attempt at keeping Infiniti alive, was hurting the lineup. There's been good changes since 2022. They have a 9-sp stepped auto now. They finally have a compelling electric car to help meet their quotas, in the Ariya. If they do a 12th generation Maxima I hope it's with the 9-sp. Or manual out of the Z.

@@vitreoushumor Im fine with it being FWD, an AWD system would add a few hundred pounds to an already 3,700lb sedan and it seems to put it's power down pretty well for 300HP, for me it's just the CVT that lets this car down, and it definitely lets down this 3.5L V6 which is a great motor, If Nissan put a Jatco 7 or 9 speed in the Maxima it would be great, a competitor like the Hyundai Sonata N Line has a DCT.

Heavy steering at low speed but light steering at high speed? That's the exact opposite of what people want from a car's steering.

I had a maxima as a rental and the light steering was scary at high speeds. There's a corner I could throw my 2016 optima in at 60 mph with no issue, but the maxima felt like it was gonna veer off of the road because the steering is so vague and light. It felt like I was driving a car with only one wheel in the center of the car.

I didn't say my Optima handles better, I pointed out how the maxima doesn't feel as confident in the same corner 🤣 you'll probably be pissed to find out my optima rides better too huh? The Maxima has a bumpy ride and a lot of journalists pointed that out too. The Maxima is my favorite Nissan and one of my favorite sedans of all time, but it has some shortcomings. Just a bunch of sheep in the comments. I hate the car community. There’s nothing wrong with this damn car having a CVT. The ONLY down side is starting off. The belt starts off slow then needs to ramp up speed. That’s it. Once the needle reaches 4k you’re good! A regular auto would just push you back into your seat more and have a better take off.
If y’all change your damn fluid in your transmission you won’t have issues. From what it seems , Nissan releases a new CVT every 3 weeks, this car is FINE. do you damn maintenance and you’ll be FINE! you don’t even hear of these cars having transmission issues YET you hear ALOT of Honda accords going through head gaskets and transmissions, yet y’all go for those all day long. None of you know a crap thing about cars. It’s just everyone repeating the same old stupid song.

I have a 2017 Maxima SL, the person who ordered it got a really good deal with it, they ordered the SL trim and added the platinum options, so it has more to it than it normally would, for like 10k less than the platinum model. I'm at 117k miles right now, I've since serviced the CVT every 50k, and I've had zero issues. It has never once caused me a problem mechanically. The only thing I'd say I've really had trouble with is that Nissan didn't plan out the accent piece that wraps around the C pillar, because it broke off on mine. I'm not really easy on cars, she's been through some AltimaTM shenanigans, but she takes them like a champ.

Not to disagree but it was always much easier to get these way below MSRP. Plus, on the used market, they became a much better bang for your back vs a poverty spec Camry or accord. (Especially sound system wise) if it were me now, regardless of price I’d say a q50 or an ES would make more sense even on the used market because they fulfill their roles better. I never thought I would go back to Nissan and even buy something with a CVT but, I loved this car when I test drove it. Honestly, yes, the sports sedan is a bad idea, that does not work well but it drives very sporty. The CVT does not work as a sport anything but, it works great as a daily driver, no complaints at all. I got back into my wife's Lexus SUV and I hated driving it. I'm really enjoying my maxima, and I hope they bring it back. My last Nissan was 2002 maxima.

I had a 2016 version when it came out. I enjoyed it until I traded it in 2022 for a Subaru wilderness but:
1-had a back knocking sound that ended up being shocks and Nissan took care of it after a year of visits.
2-no issues either with cvt but you really have to change the cvt oil every 25k or else it does start slowing down and whine more.
3-front control arms and bushings went bad at 60k and paid $1800 to replace them. No I was not off roading, just from high way speeds
4-always shacky around 80+ miles although I did stick with the stock tires even for replacement and it could have been one bad tire but still irritated me that it didn’t feel together after owning it a while.
5-she is very efficient even with premium fuel. You can get two weeks out of her.
6-my model never had apple car play and Nissan wouldn’t give it to us 2016 owners so this version gets the best version of it all but I felt it was a slap at the time for paying all this money and Nissan wouldn’t give it to us as a courtesy.
7-60k maintenance is horribly expensive and you can’t just change spark plugs on these things that easy.
8-AC isn’t enough and doesn’t cool car quick enough
9-Ac controls went bad operationally but worked fine for me or I made it work until I could trade it on
10-don’t put this thing through car washes, Nissan paint will not survive and start oxidizing around 50k

I had one of these, a 2018. It went through two recalls for leaking brake fluid, then it leaked brake fluid and left me without working brakes. I got rid of it ASAP. Good riddance. I got it only because the driver’s seat is super comfortable for a very tall driver.

Engine has more than enough power and good sound while the gearbox is dead and kill the fun factor.
Handling is ok but the steering is so light and slow and doesn’t have enough feel.
Styling is sporty and the car is low but the cabin is quiet and comfy.

Have a 2017 with 150k miles so far. Same gen as in the video and its been troublefree. I agree with your analysis, overall its a great car to drive around. The CVT isnt as bad as in the Altima and Rogue but def not a sports car. Great for roadtrips and commutes. Feels very different from the cheaper cars and more responsive. I still think the Maxima looks good on the road but its not worth the new MSRP price nowadays. The interior is great and comfy though.

The Maxima was a great vehicle but because the things that were going on with Nissan itself I don’t think and believe the Maxima, Altima, QX30, QX50 or the QX55 would have gotten an a/t just because the vehicles were already slated in Carlos era and its why when Makoto came in and the Pathfinder was being refreshed its why it and a few others got an upgraded transmission..
Let’s remember that they had sold their shares from Mercedes Benz
They also was in turmoil with the Japanese government
They had lost tons of cash because of a greedy CEO and who was turning the company into a eco box because of Renault and trying to merge Nissan into Renault to hide funds and build cheap vehicles
Lets also not forget that it was not Nissan fault but Carlos that made every bad decision for Nissan and Mitsubishi but wanted to continue to use these two companies to be a cash cow for Renault who is owned by the French government as well ..
Its a lot and I feel its why Nissan is still trying to find its way back because of all the things that happned

I have to say the way Nissan went about this car is about as weird as any car could be. So they design this thing as a performance sedan and they went above and beyond to give it an amazing, throaty sounding V6 fixed paddle shifters, wider body, nice seats, but they absolutely pooped the bed with that absolutely awful CVT and that weird, steering that's heavier at slow speeds and lighter at high speeds.
It's really weird to wonder what the designers of this car were thinking... there must have been a ton of arguments within the design/product development team.

Sound system was truly incredible like sub tophr said. Honestly better than like a WRX CVT or integra CVT in my opinion even tho I’m not a Nissan fanboy at all.
