"Land of the Navajo" - Peter Rowan. Filmed in Ireland "Session"
For several years between 1983 and 1987, the bluegrass/folk music trio of Peter Rowan, Mark O'Connor and Jerry Douglas performed throughout the United States and in many countries around the world. While they never recorded an album together, the trio brought many memorable performances to the stage. Often they were joined by legendary Nashville upright bass player Roy Huskey Jr. to form a quartet when the group played in their hometown of Nashville, TN, and occasionally at some larger festivals. The group was largely responsible for reinvigorating the downtown Nashville music scene and specifically breathing new life into the bluegrass club the "Station Inn" beginning in 1983 with their now infamous weekly sold-out Thursday nights appearances. While O'Connor and Douglas were responsible for ushering in the New Traditionalist and acoustic music revival in the recording studios on their instruments (the fiddle, mandolin and dobro) during the same time period, their live musical outlet forays could be seen most every Thursday night at the Station Inn with many famous friends making a night of it every week. Their audiences amounted to who's who in the entertainment industry. On any given night most anyone could be in the audience to watch them play and kick back a few beers, and most the time it amounted to several high profile audience members taking in a couple great sets of music. Their audience regularly included people such as Roy Acuff and Porter Wagoner to Bela Fleck, Sam Bush and Edgar Meyer to Vince Gill and Ricky Skaggs, to Steve Earl and Lyle Lovett to famous classical musicians and even famous actors such as Robert Duvall. Soon, about every acoustic act wanted to appear at the Station Inn.

Mark O'Connor and Jerry Douglas on backup could make even Donald Duck sound good, but when Peter takes a turn, the roof just gently rises and floats away.

Great song. I remember when my dad would get his guitar out and play this. I was always very fond of this particular song.

Not only a superb song, but an epic narrative poem... kinda reminiscent of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's "Evangeline". Was required reading back in 8th grade, English class in the '60s when we had to read stuff like that. Excellent performance!

A vet with serious PTSD. Utah is my place of birth, and this sound my roots.Daddy played guitar while Mama harmonized and the girls danced. Baby brother played whatever he wanted.

Silly Peter. Bison aren't a significant part of Navajo culture. "Buffalo" and "Navajo" may rhyme but they don't belong together.
