    Rammstein has been watching America and they are not happy.

    This song and video is absolutely a masterpiece. There is so much symbolism here. And Till Lindeman’s lyrics always have more than one interpretation. “Schwartzen Mann” can be both the bogeyman (which it is in the German language), but also the black man (the literal translation). One of the interpretations (which the refugees surrounded by barbed wire at the beginning and end also allude to) is that it highlights how our media in Europe fed the “fear of the other” during the refugee crisis, which certainly had more than a tinge of racism and xenophobia. Another is the broader interpretation of the symbolism (the fear absorbed though the monitors alluding to our media, replacing thatched fences with brick walls, buying guns to “defend ourselves” etc) is how the cycle of fear just make us weak and paranoid. You’re definitely on to something with social media feeding that cycle.
    And the visual queues with everything in the video being black, white and red until Till smashes the TV, the source of the fear-mongering propaganda, and colours return are very poignant.

    • @Iustinfm
      @Iustinfm 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agree with your interpretation, just wanted to add about the bit at the end, where the guys are watching the refugees on the screen enjoying a nice treat, not a care in the world, while the refugees, the ones they were terrified of, are watching them living their lives in peace, wishing they could have that.

    The building of the walls and arming can also be interperated as countries considering eachother bogeyman, and arming themselves, thereby scaring thier neighbours into a collapsing situation. So so soooo many layers.

    The colours are those of the Third Reich and the German Empire, foreboding the return of fascism.
    The "schwarzer Mann" is what we in German call the "bogeyman", but a translation misses the double meaning: "black man". Brown, black people are the bogeymen. It's also a children's game where they have to evade the "bogeyman/black man".
    The cheerleaders' dance has similarities with the haka, which is a war dance.
    "Angst" could be translated into English as fear, angst (common origin), anxiety, terror and dread. Which is it?
    The white fences, the cheerleaders, the happy, white men mowing their lawn, the TV, the semi-automatic firearms (they're legal in the US). Clear references to the American dream.
    The more the man wrecks the TV and the lawn mower, the more colour comes back to their lives.
    We're normally watching refugees through our mobile phones, in camps, wandering, as if it were their everyday life. What if they watched OUR everyday lives? (towards the end of the video)
    The leader of the people is in a straitjacket (demented), yet his wires are also those of the band (entertainment) and computers (ideology) which people are literally glued to.
    Finally, "DU" (YOU) is being shouted during the viking clap. We're afraid of YOU.

    Greetings from Germany, "The Black Man" means in Germany the Boogeyman" !

  • @amaris7486
    @amaris7486 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello everyone. I'm German and I've known rammstein for so long that I can't even remember when I heard them for the first time. But one thing is for sure, they treat the first topics in their own way and leave room for interpretation, like in this song angst. in which they sing about the black man and no that has nothing to do with the color of the skin, it's about the boogeyman and fear itself. We are so busy in our time looking at our fears and our surroundings (media, radio, etc.) fuel this fear, and in the end we are so scared that we arm ourselves and shoot ourselves because we know nothing but fear. So mega cool the song is so bitter it is, but at the same time honest and real. And every time the cheerleading (Roboots) part comes they say Du = you. which comes from a child's game, here there is a catcher (the boogeyman) and the other players trying not to be caught by him. The "boogeyman" stands, for example, at the other end of the sports hall. He shouts, "Who's afraid of the boogeyman? ' while his opponents yell, 'Nobody' You're afraid of the boogeyman? Because the ironic thing is we all (humanity) are Black men (boogeyman).Don't live in fear folks, and Don't let the Fear in you.I can't describe it better because of my English Skill. Open your eyes people the world is full of colors, colors are life.

    As a German i may be able to give some context: they are very clearly talking about actual black people. When they sing about people being afraid of "the black man" they are talking about racist people that are scared about black people/people from other countries. This is made very clear by the after-credit scene: they were sitting together eating chocolate marshmallow. Those were literally called (translated) "n-word kisses" in germany up until a few years ago. And the mother and child sitting inside the barbwire also associate this song with refugees and people being manipulated into being afraid of these people they never met before.

      Rammstein are very aware of their word play. I had to search the comments for an explanation on what they were eating since we don't have those in the US. Sound wise I couldn't even place what the food was.

      As a German you must've realized this translates to being afraid of the boogeyman as well. This video is not just a reference to race. This video is about how severely the media warps and controls peoples perception and how the elite use fear as a tool to control people until we destroy our humanity and everyone around us. We are taught to fear(the boogeyman) even as little children. Fear is the ultimate tool and people don't realize the truth until it's too late.

    There was a game we played in nursery called: wer hat Angst vorm Schwarzen Mann? Before it was politicaly incorrect (1970's). It can be anything that puts fear in people. My interpretation is the international rise of right wing parties and their approach via fear. The game went like this: one was the black man stood in front of the croud shouting: wer hat Angst vorm Schwarzen Mann? Croud: niemand! (nobody!) Schwarzer Mann: wenn er aber kommt? (What if he comes?) Croud: dann laufen wir davon (then we run away) and then the chase started. That's Austria in the 70's and 80's for you. Nobody of us actually thought of an actual black man-it was mor like a demon or something. Ta, m.
