This album isn't good lyrically, but sonically it's almost as good as Witness. Not her best album, truly a great one for experimenting with these new sounds for her. Altough you could say that there ARE better single choices than the ones that already out, but happy for her for seeing her happy with this album!
yes, 143 feels like a natural transition after Witness, while Smile felt like the follow up to PRISM. She's teasing an acoustic era so I wonder if it'll fell like her most roots with One of the Boys slow tracks and pre-debut Katy

I'm not sure why so many people appear to be going into this album expecting moving lyrical content when Katy has never served that, and I say this as a Katycat. I think this is her best album since Witness. Smile is her worst imo. Are criticisms warranted? Sure. There's a lack of harmonies, bridges and adlibs that make a lot of the songs sound incomplete. That aside, however, I think this is a solid pop album from a production standpoint. And I'd argue that many people are letting the Dr. Luke situation cloud their true opinions about the album.
I think she’s delivered some incredible lyrics with songs FULL, not just 3/4 words listed while singing/talking. I would say everything she’s done before is better tbh. The second half is strong, the first half is simple in lyrics and production and EMOTION for me
It’s just the writing sucks regardless. For pop songs, Teenage Dream and Prism has better writing overall. Compare Walking On Air to Lifetimes. The former is fun, creative, and euphoric. The latter is generic and half baked. Not helping is lack of a bridge for Lifetimes. The first half of 143 suffers from this issue of bland and commercialized writing. The second half improves a lot but still a lot of them lack bridges. Smile is way better than 143 lol. 143 has nowhere near anything that can touch NRO, CAIL, Daisies, and Harleys in Hawaii.
Meh the instrumentals are missing a lot and sound empty and generic. Nirvana could’ve had a huge pop chorus with an actual chorus not a drop. Artificial could’ve been a single as well if it had better production.
The lyrics are a low point even for her. The album as a whole is bland and outdated and the songs aren’t catchy. It’s not just people being blinded by the whole Dr. Luke issue.

Ngl, Wonder was the only track where I truly detected some vital signs coming from the album, in my first listen. It's dancing, it's heartfelt, it's cute. Everything I could expect from KP. I wish the rest of the album could keep up with this track.

I think you're too much into your “lyrical lens” if that make sense. With how I take this album, Katy said that it's a dance album. Therefore I will listen to it as such - a dance record. I'm not going into this expecting groundbreaking songwriting skills or anything. I'm in it for the fun and enjoyment because this is what this album is, a dance album. Listening to albums should depend on your mood and the situation that you currently are. If I'm depressed, I won't be listening to this album. Lol. Because why would I? Right now, I'm having fun and I wanna dance so this album is IT!

This album feels so weird after smile. Even tho it wasn't one of her best discography's, it was one of her most personal IMO. Daisy is such a stand out to me as a song where katy was really hearing herself.

As a Katy fan I definitely understand your perspective. I'll give her her 10s on the transitions between songs and I love IHHM for the first half as a standout and as a close second Crush. But once All The Love started playing I was instantly captivated and the emotion in it really sold it for me. I get it's mainly a dance pop track so it has something for everyone. A solid 7.5/8 out of ten for me and if she makes All The Love or Wonder (especially since it isn't a Luke produced song) she has potential for a hit tbh! Thanks for sharing your honest thoughts.

As a Katy fan while I get its intention is to be fun dance pop, she could have easily had so much more depth in the lyricism, given us proper verses etc. Because she's done all that in the past. A few skips and a few gems imo. Lifetimes would go hard in the club though.
as a katycat, your reaction is so valid. its a solid pop record overall but the lyrics on some of the songs were really basic, tbh. yes its a dance album and its understandable how some of the songs are supposed to be fun, vibey and not that deep however there are also creative ways to write a dance song/album without using basic phrases, rhymes & words and being so repetitive. i really do believe katy can write better lyrics though. i remember how most of the songs from her debut album, one of the boys was self written and how she has also written songs for other artists and they were great. like thinking of you is a masterpiece and still one of my favorite katy songs ever. PS. i love how you just vibed to the 2nd half of the album which is great to see since its also my faves on the record. (all the love, nirvana, artificial & wonder SLAPS)
The synths in the beginning of Lifetimes are really similar to those in Kylie Minogue’s Tension, which is why I actually really dig it. I do prefer Tension over Lifetimes though, the production and vocal layering on that track should be studied, literally pop perfection.
All The Love is like the only song on this album that made me feel /something/ if not just like oh that sounds interesting and unexpected with the vocal runs. It carries some kind of feeling of authenticity
I honestly disagree and feel that this album is quite cohesive for a katy album, and that's certainly evident by the number of recurring writers and producers as opposed to the amalgamation of different sessions that made up Smile. I do agree that the second half of this album is the best part, though I do think the first half does a good job as setting it up by pushing out the meaningless, fun, easy breezy tracks before the deeper and more experimental side. She made it quite abundantly clear this album was just a positive dance album that wasn't meant to have deep lyricism or messages, so it's certainly not one for those who prefer poetry in their music. I personally think this one stands well in her discography as a fan for over a decade, certainly over her last couple of records.

On the Dr.Luke matter what upsets me for Katy is that people forget that Kesha willingly outed Katy being r*ped as well as talked terribly about her at the time as well. And for people to say “they were friends,” personally of any of my friends felt it was their place to tell the whole world I was r*ped as well as talked Terribly about them with no ounce of apology also I would not categorize them as a friend for me. I'm not excusing Katy’s decision to work with him but I also feel that the “kesha and Katy were friends” needs to let go because personally true colors were shown back in 2017 of where they stood. Please do RESEARCH and hold everyone accountable. What this album lacks indeed - it's Katy herself. Smile was a good album, the album you could both dance and cry to. And most important, there was so much of Katy in it, her emotions. The first half of 143 is bland and emotionless, you just don't feel anything. The second one is really better in this regard, but it cannot change the overall impression.
Katycat here!!! I totally agree that I highly prefer the second half of the album. Wonder is my favorite track. I do, however, love that each track fades in to the next. I just love the effect of that!!
as a fan I've been waiting for the dance record she promised back in 2014 (i guess), but imo only a few tracks stand out along with walking on air, which i expected to be the vibe for the record. let's see how the acoustic album will come out, probably next.
It’s not even that the songs have to be deep in any way, but the production on this record PLUS the repetitive, uninspired lyrics result in boring songs. Beyoncé, Dua, and countless others have shown that dance songs about love and carefreeness don’t have to be flat and lifeless. Katy just couldn’t do it with Dr Luke and others on this project.
My fav album with girl with no face released this year. I love the dancy vibe. My favs are Womans World, Crush, Gorgeous and Truth but All the love it great too
I went into this ready to judge it but personally I really really loved it. Personally, I love "bimbo pop" which is basically just kinda basic pop without very dynamic lyrics. Understand the criticism tho. Oh and my fav is Artificial
I love this album it gave what it needs to give to dance and just have fun with it!! I do have to say it’s one of her better albums in her discography!! It reminds me so much of Ava Max Diamonds and Dancefloor which I played that album out to the ground!!! Gorgeous with Kim is one of the standouts for me!!!
I was overall disappointed by this album but I too found All The Love was the hidden gem in this album, glad someone else agrees. 😂 but yeah the second half is better.
I didn't dislike 143, but I guess the fact that, except the singles, I finished the album forgetting right away how it was some tracks (namely the track 2, Crush, Nirvana, Truth) says a lot about the overall quality... That being said, LIFETIMES is pretty cool actually (if you are a EDM baby like me xD) and WONDER should be her next single.
I felt the same. I like it more from ALL THE LOVE onwards and ALL THE LOVE is definitely my favorite! 💛 But the others are growers, so now I can really enjoy the full album.

As a HUGE katy fan myself these katy rats in the comments are delusional. This album is in contention with smile for her worst yet. There is little personality in this album. In an attempt to mature her sound the lyrics are like a toned down version of Cardi B therefore missing the fun innuendos and humor that katy once possessed. Or her attempts at sentiment were incredibly cliche.More than that this album lacks substance. No one expects katy to be as diaristic as Taylor Swift but this album tells you nothing about her life or thoughts/feelings. Every album before smile although not lyrical masterpieces all had lyrics that felt unique and personal to her with songs like thinking of you, i’m still breathing, lost, the one that got away, circle the drain, not like the movies, by the grace of god, ghost etc. THE BIGGEST problem with this album that no one is talking about is how the verses suck. Because the beat in the verses are just a quieter/simplified version of the chorus’s all the verses lack melody and sounds like she’s just singing over a randomly chosen beat leading to unsatisfying verses. There were some things I liked about this album, Lifetimes Is so catchy (although the verse doesn’t help) the pre-chorus of Crush is great, I like artificial purely because of its uniqueness and JIDs feature is great, love the reverb at the end of the chorus on All The Love, and Truth is a pretty convincing song. But overall I feel like she phoned it in, generally the choruses were enjoyable( though crush, wonder and nirvana were disappointing) but nothing standout or amazing, the verses were clunky, her vocals were over processed, the basic club beats bled into each other (No unique sounds like Legebdary Lovers or Power for example) and the lack of bridges is disappointing. I’ll be looking forward to her acoustic record!!

At the same time, it contains dance music elements, nightclub elements, subculture styles, and current young pop elements as the background, and LGBTQ groups will go crazy to chase things. It's super sad the best song on the album is Wonder and that's the only song that's not produced by Dr Puke. She should forget this album, pick up Cirkut and Stargate and make a new album with them. I'm not sure Wonder as a lead single, but I do Imagine a lot of older fans (I was 13 when TD released) would've appreciated it as a Promo single.

I think this album is before its time. I said what i said 😂 in like 20-30 years it will be one of the most iconic pop albums ever, like confessions on a dancefloor and chromatica etc. And people will be like „nearly everyone missed how great it was because of cancel culture back then”.
My issue with this album is the fact that so many of these songs, despite the beat, feel lifeless. The lyrics aren’t just basic they just feel like they’re missing the human element. The 2nd half was a solid set though. Wonder was great.

Repetition is part of this genre. I don't know if you've heard it, but BRAT has 'B2b' and 'Everything is romantic'... You can't tell me these ones AREN'T repetitive, cuz they're the most big examples of it.
But comparing it to another album doesn't really work either. Repetitive cane good or bad, it depends on how it's done. This doesn't work well, where as BRAT does.

Genuinely love Katy one of the boys and witness are great projects but Katy's biggest issue is that she is a great collaborator and not that good of a solo writer, if she came out 30 years ago she'd be a front woman for a band and but a solo artist and it would work, Katy needs to work with great artist to get great art from her age has really good vision but thrives off working with others which is a great thing but when you get an album which developed almost with producer first in mind she can't work her way into the song. i’ve been a fan of katy since i remember and i’ve loved her with every new project she came out with, even her more “flop” eras, but this was definitely underwhelming. the rollout was so messy and there was a clearly bad choice of the singles. i remember i wanted her to have her really big comeback moment like other celebrities were having these couple last years but this was not it, it’s even a little sad. wonder is definitely the best song of the album with the typical lyrics of empowerment she is known for, and it really reminds me of firework, but still it feels out of place from the rest of the album. i thinks it’s an ok album after all but i don’t see myself listening to it much in the future, the lyrics do fall flat and the production is nice till some point. the features are okay too. her vma performance was fire tho and i think that’s the best thing that has came from this era, she is truly a legend and a great performer, but this didn’t get there. and great review too!

I would say everything she’s done before is better tbh. The second half is strong, the first half is simple in lyrics and production and EMOTION for me
It’s just the writing sucks regardless. For pop songs, Teenage Dream and Prism has better writing overall. Compare Walking On Air to Lifetimes. The former is fun, creative, and euphoric. The latter is generic and half baked. Not helping is lack of a bridge for Lifetimes.
The first half of 143 suffers from this issue of bland and commercialized writing. The second half improves a lot but still a lot of them lack bridges.
Smile is way better than 143 lol. 143 has nowhere near anything that can touch NRO, CAIL, Daisies, and Harleys in Hawaii.
Meh the instrumentals are missing a lot and sound empty and generic. Nirvana could’ve had a huge pop chorus with an actual chorus not a drop. Artificial could’ve been a single as well if it had better production.
The lyrics are a low point even for her. The album as a whole is bland and outdated and the songs aren’t catchy. It’s not just people being blinded by the whole Dr. Luke issue.

I think you're too much into your “lyrical lens” if that make sense. With how I take this album, Katy said that it's a dance album. Therefore I will listen to it as such - a dance record. I'm not going into this expecting groundbreaking songwriting skills or anything. I'm in it for the fun and enjoyment because this is what this album is, a dance album.
Listening to albums should depend on your mood and the situation that you currently are. If I'm depressed, I won't be listening to this album. Lol. Because why would I? Right now, I'm having fun and I wanna dance so this album is IT!

This album feels so weird after smile. Even tho it wasn't one of her best discography's, it was one of her most personal IMO. Daisy is such a stand out to me as a song where katy was really hearing herself.

As a Katy fan I definitely understand your perspective. I'll give her her 10s on the transitions between songs and I love IHHM for the first half as a standout and as a close second Crush. But once All The Love started playing I was instantly captivated and the emotion in it really sold it for me. I get it's mainly a dance pop track so it has something for everyone. A solid 7.5/8 out of ten for me and if she makes All The Love or Wonder (especially since it isn't a Luke produced song) she has potential for a hit tbh! Thanks for sharing your honest thoughts.

As a Katy fan while I get its intention is to be fun dance pop, she could have easily had so much more depth in the lyricism, given us proper verses etc. Because she's done all that in the past. A few skips and a few gems imo. Lifetimes would go hard in the club though.

as a katycat, your reaction is so valid. its a solid pop record overall but the lyrics on some of the songs were really basic, tbh. yes its a dance album and its understandable how some of the songs are supposed to be fun, vibey and not that deep however there are also creative ways to write a dance song/album without using basic phrases, rhymes & words and being so repetitive. i really do believe katy can write better lyrics though. i remember how most of the songs from her debut album, one of the boys was self written and how she has also written songs for other artists and they were great. like thinking of you is a masterpiece and still one of my favorite katy songs ever.

The synths in the beginning of Lifetimes are really similar to those in Kylie Minogue’s Tension, which is why I actually really dig it. I do prefer Tension over Lifetimes though, the production and vocal layering on that track should be studied, literally pop perfection.
All The Love is like the only song on this album that made me feel /something/ if not just like oh that sounds interesting and unexpected with the vocal runs. It carries some kind of feeling of authenticity
I honestly disagree and feel that this album is quite cohesive for a katy album, and that's certainly evident by the number of recurring writers and producers as opposed to the amalgamation of different sessions that made up Smile. I do agree that the second half of this album is the best part, though I do think the first half does a good job as setting it up by pushing out the meaningless, fun, easy breezy tracks before the deeper and more experimental side. She made it quite abundantly clear this album was just a positive dance album that wasn't meant to have deep lyricism or messages, so it's certainly not one for those who prefer poetry in their music. I personally think this one stands well in her discography as a fan for over a decade, certainly over her last couple of records.

And for people to say “they were friends,” personally of any of my friends felt it was their place to tell the whole world I was r*ped as well as talked Terribly about them with no ounce of apology also I would not categorize them as a friend for me. I'm not excusing Katy’s decision to work with him but I also feel that the “kesha and Katy were friends” needs to let go because personally true colors were shown back in 2017 of where they stood. Please do RESEARCH and hold everyone accountable. Also watch Katy’s interviews I feel like people see a catchy headline or a 30 second clip and make perceptions about her which she clearly feels and knows and something I feel like personally the media has taken note of that and used that in sort of continuing that perception when really she is just someone who genuinely loves what she does wants to spread love and light with others but also show there's more to her.

What this album lacks indeed - it's Katy herself. Smile was a good album, the album you could both dance and cry to. And most important, there was so much of Katy in it, her emotions. The first half of 143 is bland and emotionless, you just don't feel anything. The second one is really better in this regard, but it cannot change the overall impression.

as a fan I've been waiting for the dance record she promised back in 2014 (i guess), but imo only a few tracks stand out along with walking on air, which i expected to be the vibe for the record. let's see how the acoustic album will come out, probably next.
It’s not even that the songs have to be deep in any way, but the production on this record PLUS the repetitive, uninspired lyrics result in boring songs. Beyoncé, Dua, and countless others have shown that dance songs about love and carefreeness don’t have to be flat and lifeless. Katy just couldn’t do it with Dr Luke and others on this project.

I love this album it gave what it needs to give to dance and just have fun with it!! I do have to say it’s one of her better albums in her discography!! It reminds me so much of Ava Max Diamonds and Dancefloor which I played that album out to the ground!!! Gorgeous with Kim is one of the standouts for me!!!

I was overall disappointed by this album but I too found All The Love was the hidden gem in this album, glad someone else agrees. 😂 but yeah the second half is better.
I didn't dislike 143, but I guess the fact that, except the singles, I finished the album forgetting right away how it was some tracks (namely the track 2, Crush, Nirvana, Truth) says a lot about the overall quality...
That being said, LIFETIMES is pretty cool actually (if you are a EDM baby like me xD) and WONDER should be her next single.

As a HUGE katy fan myself these katy rats in the comments are delusional. This album is in contention with smile for her worst yet. There is little personality in this album. In an attempt to mature her sound the lyrics are like a toned down version of Cardi B therefore missing the fun innuendos and humor that katy once possessed. Or her attempts at sentiment were incredibly cliche.More than that this album lacks substance. No one expects katy to be as diaristic as Taylor Swift but this album tells you nothing about her life or thoughts/feelings. Every album before smile although not lyrical masterpieces all had lyrics that felt unique and personal to her with songs like thinking of you, i’m still breathing, lost, the one that got away, circle the drain, not like the movies, by the grace of god, ghost etc. THE BIGGEST problem with this album that no one is talking about is how the verses suck. Because the beat in the verses are just a quieter/simplified version of the chorus’s all the verses lack melody and sounds like she’s just singing over a randomly chosen beat leading to unsatisfying verses. There were some things I liked about this album, Lifetimes Is so catchy (although the verse doesn’t help) the pre-chorus of Crush is great, I like artificial purely because of its uniqueness and JIDs feature is great, love the reverb at the end of the chorus on All The Love, and Truth is a pretty convincing song. But overall I feel like she phoned it in, generally the choruses were enjoyable( though crush, wonder and nirvana were disappointing) but nothing standout or amazing, the verses were clunky, her vocals were over processed, the basic club beats bled into each other (No unique sounds like Legebdary Lovers or Power for example) and the lack of bridges is disappointing. I’ll be looking forward to her acoustic record!!

It's super sad the best song on the album is Wonder and that's the only song that's not produced by Dr Puke. She should forget this album, pick up Cirkut and Stargate and make a new album with them. I'm not sure Wonder as a lead single, but I do Imagine a lot of older fans (I was 13 when TD released) would've appreciated it as a Promo single.

Repetition is part of this genre. I don't know if you've heard it, but BRAT has 'B2b' and 'Everything is romantic'... You can't tell me these ones AREN'T repetitive, cuz they're the most big examples of it.

i’ve been a fan of katy since i remember and i’ve loved her with every new project she came out with, even her more “flop” eras, but this was definitely underwhelming. the rollout was so messy and there was a clearly bad choice of the singles. i remember i wanted her to have her really big comeback moment like other celebrities were having these couple last years but this was not it, it’s even a little sad. wonder is definitely the best song of the album with the typical lyrics of empowerment she is known for, and it really reminds me of firework, but still it feels out of place from the rest of the album. i thinks it’s an ok album after all but i don’t see myself listening to it much in the future, the lyrics do fall flat and the production is nice till some point. the features are okay too. her vma performance was fire tho and i think that’s the best thing that has came from this era, she is truly a legend and a great performer, but this didn’t get there.

Honestly I think 143 is a solid album it caters to different audiences all at once; I’ve seen people who are into hip hop and rap like Gimmie gimmie / gorgeous / artificial / Nirvana and I’ve seen pop listeners like crush / all the love / wonder / truth. I think you can’t please everyone in one album so in a sense I find it smart in a way to cater and album to every audience and give them each a piece they can take away
