wish i had known this months ago!! over half my pieces were breaking, now i have stopped using sculpy 3 which in my opinion is rubbish apart from some of their colours being pretty. i have switched to premo, souffle, du kit ,cos clay and the spotlight brand called crafters choice. I also bake from cold for 1 hour minumim and leave my piecec in my wee toaster oven till completly cold. I tent with tin foil to stop burning...I dont recommend using your food oven as all these clays let off fumes!! FYI, something to think about, I have 3 monthly blood tests for health issues and we discovered polymers in my test results. i use poly clays on most days.
Yes, Sculpey III is definitely not great for thin pieces like jewellery. Sounds like you’ve got your baking formula down now! It definitely takes a bit of testing to get it right for your oven 😊

I also want to give a shout out to your website. I have looked at sooo many polymer clay cutter websites and none of them are as seamless and easy to use as yours. Everything is cohesive and easy to navigate and I love love love that you have photographs of the cutter sizes as earrings on an actual person! Nobody else does that! This is a great video! I frequently leave thing in my oven for hours at a time 😅 So long as it's 130° it just won't burn! Still good to cover things that are made from translucent.
Very useful, thanks. an oven thermometer is a very useful thing . Toaster ovens temps tend to vary quite a bit. My regular gas oven has a couple of hot spots that I need to pay attention to. Right now I use a cookie tray with parchment paper but plan to get a glossy ceramic tile.

Ergo the usefulness of s decent in oven thermometer.. I was very surprised by the temp variations I found in my gas oven. The electric toaster oven is worse. I seem to enjoy obsessing over such things just for something to do. It's silly but it is a cheap obsession that keeps me off the streets and out of the opium dens. :) You just can't find a good opium den these days.
Fantastic video! This is the hardest part for me. I have two thermometers, one for each side of the oven. I have found so far that I need to preheat the oven way longer, like for 30 minutes, in order for the temperature to even out.
I hadn’t thought of a longer preheat, although if I have pieces that ended up thicker and others thinner because I plan to layer them, I put the thicker ones toward the back of the oven.
Yes, a full preheat is as important here as for food prep. I'm the cook at my mouse but not a lady. My wife calls me "Hair Ball" in reference to the fur on my face.:) My impatience is the enemy of my baking for food and clay . The long preheat means you actually know the temp at which the piece began baking
Yep, you can bake in your house oven, polymer clay is non-toxic. Some aren’t comfortable with this though, so prefer to bake in a seperate oven 😊 I guess it’s kind of like how some people don’t like to store food in plastic containers and instead store in glass/stoneware, you do what you’re comfortable with 😊
this was such a helpful video! im taking an art studio in college rn and im using polymer clay as my medium for the final project and this video answered ALL of my questions and made me feel so much more confident going forward in this project :) im kind of scared of the oven i have to use though because im living in a really old house apartment and the oven is like old and kinda icky :( the temperature this oven gets to is probably soooo inaccurate BUT i am 100% going to buy an oven thermometer :)

It depends on what brands you are using so you may have to experiment a little. We use mostly Sculpey Premo/Soufflé and Cernit. Sculpey baking temp is 130c and the Cernit directions say 110-130, we bake them both at 130c and often mix them 😊
Yes, fan forced ovens are normally hotter though so you may need to turn it down a little. An oven thermometer will definitely help with getting the right temp!

I was taught when mixing brands that have different baking Temps, bake at the highest temp.

Hi! can I use UV light to dry polymer clay instead of Oven?
No, unfortunately not 😢 a UV light won’t cure polymer clay but you can use a normal oven or toaster oven 😊

Can polymer crumble when it is old? I have polymer that is a year old
As in uncured clay? Not usually but it could just be that it needs a little extra conditioning or some clay softener 😊
