Just a beginner here, and always struggle with colors and mixing. This was SO helpful! Thank you! In one of the recent comments said you moved from this platform to FB. If so, what is your fb page so I can come follow?
Oh, I am so glad to hear the video helped you, Lisa! I haven't moved from this platform... we have just temporarily stopped making new videos while we are upgrading our website and business model. unfortunately, it has taken us far too long to get back here. Though it shouldn't be too long now before we start filming for TH-cam again. In the meantime, we have been doing a weekly LIVE Q&A Broadcast on Facebook. It is on Wednesday's at 12:00 NOON Pacific Time on our Faceboobk Page facebook.com/polymerclay Hope to see you there!
I just watched ur video, 10 yrs after u posted it, it is still a great video. I love how easily u fix a common issue I know I have had more than once lol. Thank u for ur help
You answered all my color mixing questions. Like always. You have a great talent to answer questions and teach us with the minimum talking, id rather be doing the art than listening to a lot of extra unnecessary chatting. THANK YOU
Please, please, please, Cindy! I can never learn enough of these color mixing tips and tricks! Bring it on - I’m like a sponge! Thank you for all that you do for us clayers!
Do you have anything on your channel that discusses the use of transparent/translucent clay and mixing it with colors? If not, that would be helpful to learn. Thank you.
Hi Sreedevi Sanjish, I do have an online POlymer Clay Bead Making Course for Beginners. Here is the link if you are interested: www.beadsandbeading.com/crse/01-more.html
Oh my goodness, yes! My husband has a hard time with color and more of these types of videos would really help him out. I make Kumihimo ropes (beaded or with specialty yarns) and he makes the Cabachons to compliment the colors I use. Sometimes we just can't get it to work the way we want it. This technique is just fantastic! What a great video! Please do make more videos showing other color combinations that turn out as fantastic as these. We appreciate your tutorials so very very much!
Hi bubbles26, I use Premo Polymer Clay and they actually have a color called Raw Sienna that I would use if I wanted to mix my own Ecru color. But they also have a color named Ecru, so I would just use that. Raw Sienna is a medium brown color with a yellow under tone. Kind of a dark Caramel color. If you are using another brand of clay you will have to experiment until you get the color you desire. Good luck!
I have been looking for a formula for doing this rather than my usual hit and miss. It is such a simple idea but it took you to come up with it. Thank you so much! This is one of the most helpful and easy hints ever. You are my clay hero.
I loved this video. It was an "Aha" moment. I am brand-new to polymer clay and haven't even started my first project yet. I'm so glad I found your channel! I also subscribed 😊
What wonderful and detailed videos! These tips are incredibly helpful, many tutorials start from a place of competency that us beginners don’t have- and run into problems.
I just love this video - my favorite so far because having the right color is the most important and fun element to work with clay. It will save so much time and clay for me. I usually bring the blouse that I want to make a necklace for and try to mix the colors by guess. Never thought that adding the same common color would do the trick. So fabulous! Thank you so much!
OMG! Just look at how the colors harmonize with each other, just by doing this little trick! Great! I would never have thought, to do that. Thanks so much, I loved it! Endless Possibilities WOW!
You proved my saying "You CAN teach an old dog a new trick!" I've been a polymer clay artist for many, many years - and a lot of my work was beads and canes. But sometimes, you look at your clay supply and NOTHING seems as if would ever go together - now that problem is gone! Thank you. Barb
Very helpful thanks.... This will be added to the knowledge you have passed along in our paid tutorials. Great short tip. You have helped me so much already with color, another great idea to round out my mixing abilities.
A Big YES, I would love more color blending ideas. Color blending is not my best suite. Learning how to create my own color line would be the icing on my cake. I'm a seed bead beader to match my bead collection would be awesome.
Hi Cindy..I did try adding pigment powder(the ones used for acrylics) to the white polymer clay and it comes out very well after mixing and passing through pasta machine..so conditioning and mixing happens simultaneously.. To get a metallic shade i added some gold mica powder..results were good :)
I think color mixing is the hardest for me. This helps alot. I've not done any of your recipes yet (although I have a ton) but I am rethinking some of my old mind tapes and this truly helps. Once again, thanks, Cindy.
Peg Carter Why have you not made any of the recipes? Pick one and make it today. You can do a tiny batch, just to see how it turns out. It will help you get over the hesitation of mixing colors.
OK. Right now I'm laboring over the peacock cane. As soon as it's done I'll make one of the recipes. I bought all the clay for a recipe but now I can't remember which one. Lol
One of my favorite premo colors is an odd one, ecru because when mixed with any color it tends to make a soothing shade of that color. I tend to like the calmer versions in a lot of art.
I have always purchased the colors I wanted or at least the colors closest to what I wanted. I am so thankful that you went through this! Many times we have made a piece of jewelry, and from my point of view, one or more of the colors would be just a bit off. This is an easy guarantee that the colors in my pieces will look great together! Thanks so much for sharing and inspiring!-- Leslie
Thank you so much for sharing this information. The concept of adding gold/black so that there is a commonality between the colours and then they go together is absolutely fascinating. I'm now even more excited to get started mixing my own colours. Thanks again :)
You have amazing ideas, I was a printer and so there was a lot of ink toning and I enjoyed it very much. I have become disabled and couldn't do any work so I have now started beading and other crafts and I'm waiting on my first shipment of polymer clay and some tools. It's not a lot but it's a start. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with all of your subscriber's.
I'd love to see more about color mixing! Not afraid of it at all, I actually love it, it's one of my favorite parts of working with clay. I'm a fiber artist and just starting with clay so I've worked a lot with color mixing with yarn and fiber.
I've only been working with polymer clay for 22 months now so I hadn't figured out a formula of my own for mixing colors, so this is amazingly helpful to me, thank you!! Yes, I've been intimidated by trying to mix colors for certain projects. I would be very appreciative to see more color tips from you very smart clay lady :•)
I only buy the three primary colours plus black and white. I use he same method as I use to make matching size beads, that is to make one size circles in the clay and just make a note of how much colour or size I need to mix for either size or colour. Thank you for your posts, very intertsing.
Thank you very much for this tutorial I'm wanting to mix some custom colors and this helps a lot as I could not find the shades I see in my mind for a project. I have also watched your Tut. on skinner blends and asking a question there on it also .
Going to do a clay day with my Italian teacher and Im looking for beginner friendly tips to try and explain things for her. I remember watching this video years ago when you first put it out. Thanks so much for the tips.
This was so simple! I have played with polymer clay from time to time but your videos are so easy to follow and creative, I keep wishing I had more time to do more. I love the plus one idea especially with the gold added in for Fall!
I would love to see more colour mixing tips because I'm definitely intimidated by my polymer clay. It just sits there but looks very sternly at me. :-D
Hi Suguna Srinivas, you know I haven't tried using pigment paste to color white polymer clay yet (so many things to try and only so much time). I would be interested to hear about your results, if you try it. Let us know how it goes!
What a great tut! I have done some color mixing making notes so that I Can reproduce certain colors. But I've never done a palate before. How easy it was and the colors all looked really spiffy together! Yes more on color mixing! I did an experiment with pearlizing colors and that was great fun and the projects turned out great. Thanks again. Keep them coming!
This is SO helpful! :) I am not afraid to mix colors, but so far do it in a "let's put this together" way instead of having some organization. I appreciate your explaining how to make outcomes more predictable and ways in which color work can allow use of clays that otherwise would be at odds.
It is very simple and so universal. I did not expect to learn something from a video I was only curious about that I can use in makeup, a topic unrelated to the video. Thank you!
I knew how to do this with a mixed media piece, but never thought to do it with clay. Thank you so much! Now I think I'll have a make more cohesive pieces with my sample pack!
Wow this is so helpful and easy. Not only has this worked for me in polymer clay, but some other art mediums as well. Getting colors to work together in any medium has been a big problem for me.
I would LOVE to see you do another of these color +1 tutorials with other color variations. For example I just made your rainbow skinner blend, and I’m planning on using some to blend with translucent, some with pearl, and I’m not sure of what else (I don’t have a bar of gold, but I have silver)
I love ,LOVE, mixing colors. .. cuz there is just NOT enough colors in the world. :-)... never thought to use gold as a common base color. .. I have used pearl in everything. . Very similar results. .. inspired to play with silver now too!! Your tutorials are very informative, well defined, and of course. .. inspirational! !!!
I'd LOVE to see more of you mixing these colors together- you're a genius to be able to create such beautiful colors out of bold...ugly colors straight from the packets! Subscribed and liked! You're awesome! Oh- and I'm not intimidated by color-mixing, I just love to watch other people do them :) ~have a great day
Hi alecitalindis, I haven't really used paint to color raw polymer clay, but I have heard others do it. In theory, oil based paints would work better for tinting raw clay than acrylics because it would mix better with the oils in the polymer. But I would need to do further testing to be sure of that. Why don't you try a few different things on some tiny bits of clay yourself? You may just have your answer quicker that way! Good luck!
Great! It was really helpful to me, and I would absolutely want to see more of these, since I am a bit cautious and nervous about mixing my own colours.
great tip... i got to make a very pretty blue that looks slightly pink and purple.. I added white to light blue and light pink, then mixed the two... thanks
Whi, I have a degree in Fine Arts and taught the collage and grade school level. I gave private lessons also and when it came to mixing any color I used the black and white method. Color was my favorite class in collage because of my high interest in color. I feel your doing and excellent job and thank you, but I also feel your students should know why etc.etc. warm Regards, Shari

Thank you so much for your kind words! I appreciate you taking the time to let us know that this video helped you.
an excellent method, especially for little test trials before jumping into a larger project - good one Cindy!
That is awesome news Suguna Srinivas! Thank you so much for coming back and sharing your testing results!
this makes a lot of sense. it's sort of like the effect you get drawing or painting on a toned substrate rather than a white one.
I loved this video. It was an "Aha" moment. I am brand-new to polymer clay and haven't even started my first project yet. I'm so glad I found your channel! I also subscribed 😊
Thank you Sandy!! I am so happy to hear that this concept was a good one for you. Thanks for commenting!
Yes, Cindy, please share more of the tricks you have - it'll be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.
