- In today’s session, we will take a look on the newly China’s J-35 Carrier Fighter, does it a step to the most powerful navy? To answer this question, stay tune at this channel!
China’s Navy has taken another step toward erasing the last advantages that the US Navy enjoys, in the form of the new, stealthy carrier fighter aircraft known as the J-35. It is a fighter jet that China’s military once considered a white elephant appears to have finally secured a role as the country’s newest carrier fighter.
Prior to the introduction of the J-35, the backbone of China’s air force was the J-15 fighter. The J-15 is a reverse-engineered Chinese copy of the Russian Sukhoi Su-33, a fourth-generation fighter which has been thoroughly surpassed by U.S. planes such as the F-22 and F-35.
In fact, the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation has existed as an actual flying platform since 2011, after which it progressed through three major design iterations and several designators (F-60/J-31/ and FC-31) before resurfacing as the J-35 aircraft which features a redesigned wing and an elongated fuselage optimised for a lower radar cross section (RCS).
The J-35’s first public appearance was as the J-31 at the 2014 Air Show China expo. This model was fitted with two underpowered Russian-made engines originally developed for the Mikoyan MiG-29.

Anyone realize that this jet is quite different from the f35. There are other 5th gen proposals that would be called copy's from a visual standpoint. The design philosophy for stealth results in similar platforms. If they did get anything from the f35, the finer workings are what's important. The shape of an aircraft is about the easiest part to figure out for stealth.

@@user-es5sb7qy1m this belief is quite untrue. The latest generation of us airframes are the f22 and f35. Just doing the math, 50years before their release, it doesn't add up. It has never been true tbh. After Ww2, china had nothing but keep in mind that almost all American, European and soviet technologies were essentially scrapped for novel german tech, jet engines, delta wings and advanced radio technologies for example, so we can count that as square one. China would only have been as far back as the Soviet technologies they were licensed to produce (and eventually reverse engineered). We can take that as china's first step. China has caught up in most respects and is ahead in some (although those aren't directly related to the airframes themselves). Think of it this way, if it really was 50years, they'd only just start developing 4th gen

I think imitation in this case is pragmatic on the Chinese side given the circumstance that it needs to quickly catch up with the U.S., original designs will cost more money and time while doesn’t guarantee success. What China needs right now is to imitate what others already have and innovate what others don’t have. This is clearly demonstrated through its continuing usage of the Russian flanker airframe design while at the same time developing its own concepts in the case of the anti-ship ballistic missile or the hypersonic orbital bombardment system it just tested recently.
In the military world if you follow up on military history, everyone is copying from everyone and why not? RnD is costly and time consuming. Any information you can get helps alot
Imagining the US researched F-22/F-35: they had 10 directions, they tested those, they finalized the most optimal design.
In case of China: should they follow the same approach? (investigated 10 directions and then simply ended up with the almost SAME design)? Why don't just study THE approach that has been working!!! And save tons of resources... Of course, China has to modify here and there to fit their tactic preference as well as devices...

Correction, the US has not "spent" 1.5 trillion on the F-35. That figure is called a lifetime cost estimate. In other words, the US and all F-35 operators are projected to spend $1.5 trillion over the F-35's 60 year lifespan. That figure is also adjusted for year 2070 inflation rates

Read it again. Nobody spent 1.5 trillion on the F-35. Thats the ESTIMATED cost from development back in 1996 all the way up to retirement in 2070. And it is adjusted for 2070 inflation.
That involves 74 years worth of fuel, weapons, maintenance, training cost, upgrades, as well as all the research and developemt.
Oh and by the way the F-35 is the only weapons system that has a lifecycle costs estimate. If you did that for the B-52 it would be much much bigger since the B-52 is nearing it's 100 year anniversary in 2047 and there are still no plans on retiring it

Technology theft and sharing is a natural part of humanity. You have to have the PS1 before the PS5 and Pong before even the PS1. Think about the guy/company who invented the first motorized car or how hard the Wright Brothers fought to protect their pattent on the airplane.
China can't invade Taiwan, Russia can't invade Ukraine and the United States can't invade Iran or North Korea just like how the Soviet Union couldn't invade West Germany. This is the reality of geopolitics today and globalization.

Before J-20 all experts exposed that China is 25 years behind the US fighter technology. 5 years ago the experts have stated that China has no own jet turbine for the fighters - Today China has closed the gap and is even in some technologies advanced (hypersonic missiles/6G/AI/Robotics/photonic and graphene chips). It will be interesting to hear the experts voice coming next.

It is very weird that many people call the new plane "J35" instead of a more likely name: J31. This new carrier fighter is developed from the design of the FC-31. Similar problem to the Type 99A tank, which is used to be called "Type 99A2" for no reason.

The J-15 is based on a Su-33 prototype. The J-15 is NOT the back bone of the PLAAF, rather it is currently the back bone of the PLANAF (the naval aviation)
J15 is NOT based on Su-33, but on Ukraine T-10K which is actually the navy version of Su27.

It's funny how so many people (not this site, of course) immediately jump to the conclusion that these new aircraft (including the Russian Checkmate) are as good or better than the F35 or even the F22. No one can know for sure (at this time) if these are truly stealthy and capable or just another 4++ airframe. I doubt very much that they are in the same league as the F35.

Yeah it's based on the F35, you can take one look at it and see that its practically a carbon copy externally. Thankfully it's nothing more than a cheap imitation. The J35 costs considerably less and has a shorter range as well and has a lower top speed. Its stealth is also iffy as the materials needed to create fully stealth aircraft are a closely guarded secret on analog systems. ALso they are again too expensive.

The J-20 was tracked by a SU-33 with conventional radar. Stealth is not just the shape of the vehicle, and China is mainly interested in maintaining the appearance of strength - while being too unsure of itself to display it.
That comes from an Indian military claim right after their attempted border incursion was thwarted by the Chinese. We of course we should all take such claim as fact because there is absolutely no reason for india to lie here

This is a pretty unlikely scenario a Chinese stealth fighter had been detected by a Russia carrier fighter. The probability of this encounter is really low.

You cannot "copy" a US stealth plane. The weight distribution and engine thrust differences makes any "copy" useless for practical purposes. So all this talk about copying or partial theft of the underlying tech is not worth anything at all.

I believe that by looking at the Chinese air force and navy one forgets that real military power grows through the integration of weapon systems and weapon groups. This time, it is great the China has carriers. So they put stealth fighters on them. Very good. But do not forget, that by modernizing the missile warfare and satellite systems one could theoretically arm a carrier with observation drones and missiles could be fired from thousands of kilometers. Same goes for submarines. Do not need to be hunter-killer subs. Just recon subs. Rockets do the rest. How about that? So while the US needs carriers to deliver their birds to 3rd world countries which they can bomb to shit, China just needs a drone carrier and is in a totally different position to the US, since its potential targets are much closer. Japanese used to be called copycats. USSR and many other nations later, now it is China's turn. It is high time to look at the one who often called others as copycat.
Shape of stealth fighter is mostly derived by computer simulations, so it's possible that the computer softwares used by these armies result in similar shape. Look at KF-21 by Korea or TF-X by Turkey. Don't just call it a copy when others are also making similar aircrafts with similar specs. Also F-35s are single engine, this is double.
I would say it took more of a design spec from the f22.

The FC-31 picture shown in the video is not the J-35, there is significant change since version 2 prototype. It can inherit some technology of J-20.
By the time China’s two stealth aircraft equal the F-22 and F-35 the US will have over a 1,000 F-35s and will start to buy the F-22 replacement the 6th gen NGAD fighter for both the USN and USAF (two variants plus unmanned variants).

The j-20 design was taken from the Russian mig44, the Chinese only did certain modifications to it. But the problems are always the engines.
Russia was so upset with China over stolen technology that when China bought newer Russian aircraft, Russia black gunked the sold engines so the Chinese could neither copy or repair the engines.

It's the same as high tech products like iPhones / Androids. The phones are all somewhat similar looking nowadays but with a little bit of difference in the interior. I would think China would have to revamp the entire system anyways since it needs to be customized for China's uses and language. The J35 probably has very little similarities other than a few visual ones. The types of weapons they use, and the engine itself that will most likely be fitted by a domestic version since they are confident enough in their domestic engines to put the WS10 in the J20.

China doesnt have the same power projection aspirations as the US because of the enormous costs. I think their strategy is to use J-35 in combination with J15 and J16 4th gen planes to operate specific regional missions, but not to compete head on with the US navy. In almost every way, F-35 is complete overkill for the US navy, and a big waste of money actually.
F35s are partially intented for ground attack missions in contested airspace. China doesn't plan to invade anyone except with the possibility of Taiwan. And ground attack there can be done with long range artillery.

Stealing or "copying" is one thing, but to "build" something from that information is a COMPLETELY different matter - if you don't understand how the engineering "principles" of something that works, it ain't happening. Though the Chinese Navy may be the largest at the moment most of its vessels are not capable of sailing beyond the South China Sea. Not to mention that their Navy isn't battle tested. The battle hardened US Navy on the other may be slightly smaller than China's but is far more powerful and better funded. Which brings us to Naval Aviation the J-35 maybe newer but once again the Chinese have yet test land it on a moving ship. Where as the US's F-35 has already been tested is far more maneuverable than its elongated Chinese copy.

China and America have different military doctrines, strategies and overall objectives. America is focused on offensive capabilities, while china is on defensive. America is trying to maintain its dominance all over the world, while china is tying to strengthen its sphere of influence in nearby regions. China knows it is incredibly hard to outmatch american military hardware and capabilities, given decades of head start america enjoys, hence they are not even trying to make something better than America's top millitary gear. All china needs is to have just enough deterrence to make america suffer unacceptable losses if a war ever occurs with china.
