The infamous ‘steps of death ‘in Mauthausen

The steps are a symbol of the cruelty performed by the third Reich. Thousands were tortured and slaved to death in Mauthausen and its sub camps . Even when the war was all but over death marches were executed between the camps. On may 1st 1945 the survivors of Gusen which had a survival rate of 1/10 were forced to march on to Ebensee where they where only liberated two days after the end of the war by the Americans.My grandfather carried his brother on his shoulders in this last trek.
