My God, I had the identical set, and I mean IDENTICAL, back in Milwaukee in 1970. I do not know whatever became of it. Everything in the video was how I remember it. The AFT, the antenna, the channel changer, the simulated wood cabinet, the on/off switch, the recessed carrying handle on the top of the set, the channel light when the set is turned on, the color, tint and brightness dials, just everything. I got goose bumps watching this video, since after all these years it remains my favorite television, despite all the improvements in technology. Oh how I'd love to have this set.
In 1971 I worked for RCA for about a year. I was trained in their broadcast area for support for the TK-46 cameras and for their broadcast monitors. I also did some work in their domestic TV service area for a few months. I remember this TV model. When properly set up the pictures and sound quality was very good. When used a lot the tubes did not last very long. The 5GH8 tubes were going fairly fast. Other than that this was a fairly decent TV set.
Love your videos. It's like visiting Mr. Peabody and taking a trip in the way back machine. Thank you Doug! We had an RCA color TV just like yours but my dad bought it in December of '68. Guessing it was a 1969 model. An interesting story behind this TV. This was our first color TV. My dad was stubborn in making the jump to color. My dad was not into spending for "frivolous entertainment" back in the day as money was always tight in our household. Thanks to the Baltimore Colts dad took the plunge and he also loved surprising us including mom. It was a Monday in December of '68 and Apollo 8 was getting ready to launch. It was Chanukah. The Colts were making their run to their first Superbowl. Dad borrowed my old 1957 black and white RCA portable black and white TV which was also a surprise three years earlier also on Chanukah. Anyway it was on it's last leg and dad borrowed it to take to his hardware store to watch the Colts game which was on a Saturday. Back then dad had his store open all day even on Saturdays. Well, that old TV had a vertical hold problem and my dad was quite pissed off that he had to put up with a flipping TV picture to watch his beloved Colts. So apparently as the story goes he went up the street to his friend's Benny's 20th. Century TV and bought a color TV to be delivered the following Monday. Dad wanting to save money went economical and therefore this color TV was to be a low end portable and going in their bedroom instead of the living room. Dad originally bought the 17" Admiral color TV. I get home from school Monday and my mom tells me to go right upstairs. I go to my bedroom and notice their 1959 Zenith black and white with Space Command remote control in my room. WTH? I go to their bedroom and Dark Shadows is playing in color on our new Admiral 17" color TV. Being a 12 year old kid I was jumping for joy. Finally a color TV makes it to our tenement home (LOL). However, this Admiral happened to be a lemon and acted up not turning on. My mom was cussing like Uncle Charlie from My Three Sons. Dad was pissed too. So the folks from the TV shop come and exchange it for the RCA model like yours. It gave us over 12 years of flawless service. I got to see the NBC Peacock in color and me and my 7 year old sister were screaming with joy. My mom told us to shut the f up and watch TV. We also got to see our first space launch in living color. As a family several weeks later we as a family huddled together in their ancient bedroom to watch Superbowl 3 in living color. Sadly Joe Namath and the Jets upset my dad's beloved Colts winning 16 to 7. But we were all together as a family watching together in living color. Funny how we take those moments for granted.
I remembered that my Mom had this television set, she had it since her collage days in the early 70's. I grew up around this television set since the day I was born until my Grandparents bought a Zenith television set way back during Christmas of 1982 since, they were not able to afford too buy another television set. Lovely to see a vintage 1970 RCA television! :) Anita Augenti
That's impressive! Whenever I see such an old piece of gear in perfect all original condition like this I always wonder just where it was for those years not being used. :)
With the type of CRT used in this set, as it weakened the raster would start turning green and would not allow for good color balance. It is very important to first make sure the tubes driving the CRT must be good. The CRT design used was referenced from the green electron gun. I don't remember the particulars in how the electron gun was designed to be able to explain the reason for this. I used to know these types of details.
Great set, nice picture. I wish there was still an analog station playing oldies like that in the greater Toronto area. The closest we have is Antenna TV out of Buffalo NY but they transmit in digital.Always look forward to your videos Doug. They are the best on TH-cam.
Nice set. amazing what was considered an economy set in 1970 has a build quality that is so well done. Makes me ill to see the garbage plastic junk that is made today.
So first he literally lives in the 1960s, THEN he figures out how to run a fucking TV station in his home for full aesthetic. Wow. Amazing dedication you have there :D
Doug, great to see another upload. Will you be doing a Christmas tour this year? That TV sure is in nice shape. I really like those back-lights for the channel indicators.
Great to see you post a TV video Doug, we've missed you. I was 6 when that set was made and grew watching the Brady Bunch, great to see it on this set. We had an RCA consule when I as growing up with a similar picture. Seems strange now to see a show on that curved screen since I have grown so accustomed to a flat screen, and back then it was normal and I never even thought about it. Thanks for sharing and have a Merry Christmas!
The all plastic cabinet was lightweight and sturdy. The chassis was a CTC- 36 eco no chassis with decent picture performance and reliability. It was a Hybrid set, with series string filament tubes and small signal solid state circuitry.
Do I spy a pair of avocado green laundry appliances in the background? If so could you possibly do a video on them at some point? I'm very glad to see a new video from you!
The last analog TV I had was a Sylvania but it was in the living room and not my bedroom. I gave it to a woman who I originally wanted to date but instead decided it was best to be friends and this was back when I worked at Sears.
that is so cool i think i was watching that brady epsode yesterday sunday.. i realy like the way you keep things like they were wish you could do more old radios.. by the way im not to far from blooming.. im in jasper in...thanks for the vidio havent seen ya in a while...
This is wonderful. We had a Magnavox when I was a child that was probably this one's competitor. Same backlit channel numbers, etc. Do you have a converter box attached? The picture is amazingly good.
Back in the late '70's I had three motels under contract that had these sets. :( I would make sure I had a shopping cart full of 5GH8As when I made a service call. When they started eating flybacks I would make it a point to replace the dielectric grease on the flyback every time I had to replace 5GH8As. Here in Michigan things get very humid. Replacing the grease seemed to slow the failure rate. I guess since these were No Tell Motels the customers did not care about the crappy picture these televisions produced.
Nice picture on this set! When I was a teenager we had an 18-inch Sylvania set that had an 18VAJP22 picture tube. I wonder if it's similar to the 18VAZP22 in this RCA set. Also is that nuvistor tube a 6DS4 (or 2DS4 since you said it's a series filament set) by any chance? We had an old B&W RCA set that used a 6DS4 as the RF amp.
Funny how we watched everything without realizing how fuzzy the optics and displays were. I like vintage television sets too, but I bet they would sell like mad if one were to convert some to HD screens and digital tuners or whatever they use now... aye?
Im looking for an 63/64 RCA hotel model TV or an opportunity to make a silicone mold of the faceplate- any help/info from anyone is greatly appreciated. Apologies if this is poor form -MW
The picture quality on this economy model was very pleasing in a dark room or at night. Easier on the eyes compared to more expensive higher contrast sets. I never saw a CRT go bad on this model. I think other components failed long before the CRT had time to get weak.
you could have at least let Greg get the most important thing he had to say off his chest haha...love these videos...where are you now DRH4683..... will there be more videos??
Wow, a 43 year old TV with the original horizontal output tube!! That's the first one I've seen. Usually the first tube to go. I did see a GE tube in there, not sure of it's function.. I'm not a fan of RCA as PC boards and tubes don't mix and and I had no respect for David Sarnoff after the way he treated Edwin Armstrong.. I loved Zenith until the System 3 then quality went downhill. Too bad. It was such a GREAT company!
They had a recessed handle on the top that popped up...unless you had the hotel model and then the handle did not pop up. I would not trust that handle to carry the TV...not as heavy as a Zenith...but still heavy.
Watch videos of perfectly functional analog CRT TVs like this just frustrates me: WHY pray tell did the government upturn an entire TV broadcast spectrum that worked fine for fifty years?? And I don't buy that whole cellular bandwidth excuse.
These RCA sets were really easy on the eyes in dark rooms. No striking contrast like a Chromacolor had. They were enjoyable to watch old movies on...just not in bright lit rooms.
My God, I had the identical set, and I mean IDENTICAL, back in Milwaukee in 1970. I do not know whatever became of it. Everything in the video was how I remember it. Good stuff man, always warms my heart seeing someone who can save this stuff from grave yard.
Great set. I have the same Signal box fan in blue. I have no extremely vintage TV's yet. I sure was glad to se METV come to my area a few months ago.
That's a beautiful TV set!
It's nice to have the period programming and see it the way it was then. Very cool!!!
Another beautiful RCA. Love it.
Nice Television from RCA . I Remember seing these in the thrift store back in the late 1980;s .
A beautiful budget set, no smoke & tar damage too. Great video!!! :)
Good to hear from you Doug, nice set
What a beautiful set!!
Nice vintage low hour TV Doug.
It sure nice to see a video from you after such a long hiatus.
Hope to see more from you soon.
Tom
Nice looking set. I like the look when the "ears" are extended. Amazing how a show from that same era comes on just in time.
I had a set just like the one here I really enjoyed it. I have always been a fan of vintage tvs
Thats a nice set! Nice to see another great video from you..
Even though its an economy set it still has such a beautiful look.
The low focus soft picture is what has been kept my motivation low in getting mine going.
Nice to see another upload . You would have watched the Bradys on this set when it was new.
I have one of these I need to fix up. Strong CRT but no green in the picture. Probably a 5GH8. They are cool sets, so rare now.
With the type of CRT used in this set, as it weakened the raster would start turning green and would not allow for good color balance. It is very important to first make sure the tubes driving the CRT must be good.

Glad to see you posting again! And you're right, it's good that this economy model survived. It might be the last one of its kind!
That's the set we were watching when the news flash came that Elvis had died.
Ah yes. Th e Closet Killer Paramount logo. Luv your page.

Nice set. amazing what was considered an economy set in 1970 has a build quality that is so well done. Makes me ill to see the garbage plastic junk that is made today.
very cool! I remember 1970 very well. One of my fav years actually. Thanks for the vid! Yours are always great!
Nice TV Set! it looks like that you have an option to adjust your Brightness, Contrast, Tint, and Sharpness to adjust the TV Screen with a knob. =)
like others have said, welcome back! thanks for sharing a great video.
So first he literally lives in the 1960s, THEN he figures out how to run a fucking TV station in his home for full aesthetic. Wow. Amazing dedication you have there :D
I'm glad you are back I enjoy your knowledge of vintage electronics
Very nice set. Looks like it's new.
This set. In the seventies was purchased by millions of hotels
What’s even more impressive is that the Brady bunch was on television. It’s like you turned on the TV and was immediately transported to 1971
Doug, great to see another upload. Will you be doing a Christmas tour this year?
That TV sure is in nice shape. I really like those back-lights for the channel indicators.
Glad that yours works so well. They were a nightmare to repair back in the day. Lots of bad solder connections.
Great to see you post a TV video Doug, we've missed you. I was 6 when that set was made and grew watching the Brady Bunch, great to see it on this set. Hello Doug Please post more videos on your vintage TV's I enjoy your videos
Welcome back! I hope you upload more video's. :)
Oh man! You shut off the set right before Greg was about to tell Mr. Brady the most important thing he was ever about to say!
What? That Greg was having an affair with Florence Henderson hahahah!!!!!!
the brady bunch on a rca tube type portable color tv from metv
Love these videos!
The all plastic cabinet was lightweight and sturdy. The chassis was a CTC- 36 eco no chassis with decent picture performance and reliability. It was a Hybrid set, with series string filament tubes and small signal solid state circuitry.
I was just watching your channel the other day thinking "Man, I wish Doug would post another video".
Nice to see that this Apollo era low hour set went to a good home. Cool score.
Love these tvs want to have one again to see how people cope in this society with these tvs
"I have something I want to talk to you about Dad. All of the sudden I'm having these weird feelings about Alice.."
I love your TH-cam channel.
We no longer have Me-TV in Abilene TX so now Frndly TV or Philo is required to get it.
Nice old TV
This was when RCA made great TV sets.
Omg this brang sommany memories back wow
that is so cool i think i was watching that brady epsode yesterday sunday.. i realy like the way you keep things like they were wish you could do more old radios.. by the way im not to far from blooming.. im in jasper in...thanks for the vidio havent seen ya in a while...

6:16 Paramount TV "Closet Killer", run for your life!!!
omg lots of vintage tv sets
Back in the late '70's I had three motels under contract that had these sets. :( I would make sure I had a shopping cart full of 5GH8As when I made a service call. I wonder if "New Vista" was a wordplay on "Nuvistor".
The best tube is an old tube, it's proved itself.
That is such a cool tv! What great memories. Are they still broadcasting in analog there? The picture looked really good!
Nice picture on this set! When I was a teenager we had an 18-inch Sylvania set that had an 18VAJP22 picture tube. I wonder if it's similar to the 18VAZP22 in this RCA set. Very nice. A real tv!
Nice set! Were you using a modulator to generate your own signal on channel 13?
If he wasn't using a RF modulator, his timing on catching that show when he did was just spot on, intentional or not! :D
weasel2htm And I'm left wondering what the Brady Bunch kid told his dad!
vwestlife Probably professing his crush on Laurie Partridge!
(If that were true, it would turn the "Girl on TV" song by LFO upside-down!)
I think it was a Video Sender UHF Transmitter, and you can search on Google to find out.
Uruguay saludos desde Uruguay
My cousins had an RCA that looked very close to this one, but the cabinet was black, until their son poured a glass of Pepsi in the back grill...
I'm only a few months older than this set. Thankfully I have no NuVistors.
Funny how we watched everything without realizing how fuzzy the optics and displays were. I like vintage television sets too, but I bet they would sell like mad if one were to convert some to HD screens and digital tuners or whatever they use now... aye?
Brady bunch is a classic 80's movie
I wanted to hear what the most important thing Greg Brady ever had to say was...
Hi Doug, I just found your videos...is there a way I can contact you with a brief question without derailing the comments for this video? Thanks.
How can this still work if all broadcast channels are now digital?
I got that same exact set
are there any newvisters in the set?
The biggest problem was the cabinet top that came right off if you lifted it too vigorously.
The Brady Bunch!
you could have at least let Greg get the most important thing he had to say off his chest haha...love these videos...where are you now DRH4683..... will there be more videos??
This was so thin back then...
You must have a TV transmitter, no analog broadcasts anymore....
What was the kid going to say??
Wow, a 43 year old TV with the original horizontal output tube!! That's the first one I've seen. Usually the first tube to go. I did see a GE tube in there, not sure of it's function..
I'm not a fan of RCA as PC boards and tubes don't mix and and I had no respect for David Sarnoff after the way he treated Edwin Armstrong.. I loved Zenith until the System 3 then quality went downhill. Too bad. It was such a GREAT company!
probably a set that sat in the corner of a guest bedroom and rarely got used.
What was New Vista Color?
New Vista was the branding RCA gave their tuners that used the "Nuvistor" compact tube.
Something they called their color technology...
i thought analog was no longer broadcasted?
Kevin Lewis Low power is.
класс!!!!!!только помех смертельно боюсь!!!!!!....
Cabinet is packed.A bitch to work on.
Thanks for the video. Why is it called "portable" it does not seem so
They had a recessed handle on the top that popped up...unless you had the hotel model and then the handle did not pop up. I would not trust that handle to carry the TV...not as heavy as a Zenith...but still heavy.
Back when men were men.... Lol, even the old black and whites were 25 pounds.
6:17 Nice try, but the closet killer doesn't scare me
"There Is Nothing Wrong With Your Television Set..." 😳
Watch videos of perfectly functional analog CRT TVs like this just frustrates me:
WHY pray tell did the government upturn an entire TV broadcast spectrum that worked fine for fifty years?? And I don't buy that whole cellular bandwidth excuse.
Low focus crt..was a poor set for 1970 ..Zenith set was far superior. Maganovox was far better
Brady bunch family series
sets had the worst picture low focus tube
These RCA sets were really easy on the eyes in dark rooms. No striking contrast like a Chromacolor had. They were enjoyable to watch old movies on...just not in bright lit rooms.
greg brady i think was asking for a job to buy a car right..
The MeTV and Comcast logos take away from the nostalgia...
LCD TV are best i had CRT TV when ia was a kid in 90's but CRT TV's are shitty
scratch my last comment, i made it before he showed it. :)
