I remember as a kid, my friend's parents bought one of these Sylvania sets and being amazed at the color quality of the picture. They were good sets in their time.
You and radiotvphononut are awesome! I enjoy watching your TH-cam videos even though I don't know anything about electronics or how all the different components work together to make a CRT TV work.
I have to say I enjoy your commentary having to do with your surroundings and it is great I really enjoy your videos in general and take a great deal from them and keep them all coming all the best
I laughed so hard during this video between the noises he commented on, the OSB termite issue and the flammable cardboard preventing the candles from melting from the bottom up.
In the first TV, it looked like the horizontal output tube was replaced as the printing looked yellow. In the late 50's through the mid 70's Sylvania OEM tubes were green printed and for the most part, the replacement tubes were yellow print with some red print. Strangely, the red printed tubes came in a box where the tube number was printed red on the end flap of the box.
Desde Buenos aires, un saludo, disfruto y aprendo con sus videos y se me cae una lagrima por no tener por aqui la posibilidad de poder tocar esos tipos de aparatos de los 50, 60, 70. un abrazo
If you ever come across a Philco Ford 17mt80 set (possibly) I would like to see it. It was a roundie with black metal cabinet, and 4 wooden legs. We had one back in 1969-74. Had a horizontal oscillator problem. BTW, this is a great video!
The hills are alive with the sound of migraines! I knew you were going to make a comment about a plane passing by. Seems to happen like clockwork in your videos. If it isn't planes, sirens, or dogs, then it's the damn police helicopter monitoring you and your sets from above. Cool and informative video as always. Thank you.
About the noise, I can feel you pain .... ever tried to live in flat that is just two small rooms and the only light enter from a common shaft you share with another 23 flats, with dogs as well. On the second day I see you dropping one of these set into the shaft LOL
Shango imagine how much heat build up there would have been having 3 tube sets all in a single unventilated cabinet, realistically you wouldn't need central heating haha
I know that in the 1970's Sylvania was owned by GTE ( General Telephone ) which was based here in Michigan......crappy phone service but I believe Sylvania products were still highly rated ! Hope that helps some. D. in Mi. aka KC8YOX
Not correct..U R confusing the telephone division with consumer products and defense divisions,,,Sylvania TVs were made in Batavia ,New York and they were first to use "rare earth phosphors" which gave brighter reds in their sets... they also made quite a few CRTs for other mfrs...
I notice you never seem to clean the old dust off. Is there a particular reason? Like does it potentially create a shorted path to just blow these things out with an air compressor? I'm new to this, but trying to learn. I picked up a 1950 Magnavox Playhouse that I want to restore, and I'm wondering the best way to clean up the chassis. Thanks.
I'd just use an air compressor to blow out the dust. Currently trying to fix one up and I ended up getting my air compressor at 60-ish psi, went to the tv (it was kind of far away), and blew it out. Don't get too close, the air is pretty strong at 60.
out where i live we used to have a ice cream truck the sound track sounded horrible. That ice cream truck music sounds alot better. When i used to live on the post base there was a ice cream truck that served soft serve ice cream for 10-15 cents a cone that was in the late 66-71. That truck would come around about 1:30pm to 3:20pm. My opinion the older ice cream trucks had bettter sound that the one i heard 1989 and that truck ice cream was high price 85% profit
It would be better if the film producers could actually have the TV's restored to be functional and actually used since movie editors are not great at making it look like something is actually being displayed on the CRT, and there is a way to film CRT's without the annoying flickering that happens on the video recording.
how do I send a video to you my mum gave me a portable TV come from the early seventies and it still works almost brand new out of the box I'm just wondering how can I publish your video to send to you kevin thank you
Don't be so hard on Sylvania...a friend has a working GTE Sylvania console color set made in Batavia New York still working since 1968...They promoted their sets had more color saturation by using "rare earth phosphors" starting in 1965... they were a good company to work for back 30 years ago...Incidently, I live about 30 minutes from you and I have a vast historical resource background in early BW/Color tv and early radio... if you care to exchange contact information, let me know
i dont know about sylvania tv but for electrical gear like switch breaker i am a master electrician and i can tell you its hard to find worst shit then sylvania
Boy, and I thought that I was living on a mad, retarded street and country. I have alarms, dogs, Cuckoo birds, other very noisy birds that would wake you up early in the morning, power tools and all that crazy shit going on here, sometimes I was on the verge of going insane. Just cannot believe that people are so ignorant to the others welfare.... anyway..... Nice job on those TV's maybe you can share the movie or show with us when it will be done. Cheers :)
You know those visors the old time poker dealers wore? You could make 10 of those. LOL (I hate the term "LOL" but how else to I let you know I'm just joking?)
I remember as a kid, my friend's parents bought one of these Sylvania sets and being amazed at the color quality of the picture. They were good sets in their time.
Wow I haven't seen TVs like that for years very nice xx

We has a similar 70s Sylvania tabletop TV, it was a good TV. we had one in our trailer down the shore, and it never let us down.
Wow, that was one dead CRT. I'd like to see a vid of you restoring that Mercury combo, it's a pretty cool unit.
I love your commentaries on the background noises!
I laughed so hard during this video between the noises he commented on, the OSB termite issue and the flammable cardboard preventing the candles from melting from the bottom up.
I'll tell you, this guy is a riot....
"All we need is the sirens, barking dogs, airplanes, ice cream truck and last but not least low voltage chirps." That was funny man.
“Face Down, Arse Up”.....Ooh very kinky Shango. ;) xx

Your ice cream truck out there in CA has the SAME AUDIO MUSIC / "HELLO!" announcement as ours here in Northern Alabama. CRAZY!!!
Desde Buenos aires, un saludo, disfruto y aprendo con sus videos y se me cae una lagrima por no tener por aqui la posibilidad de poder tocar esos tipos de aparatos de los 50, 60, 70. un abrazo
That Mercury black and white combo TV is beautiful looking.
Well done. I remember seeing pictures of LBJ watching his 3 TV set-up.
That Mercury Combo was really cool Not something you see everyday.Especially here on the east coast.
Where I live in Colorado it's so quiet its creepy sometimes, no sirens, airplanes, dogs, or ice cream trucks ever lol
Exactly the same here in Southeastern North Carolina. Especially after Florence came around and flooded 2/3rds of the city.
I wish I could find a tv like that one to that actually works.
yes they are haha that's nice I want one so bad that I can use and enjoy.

Olá sou de Itaperuna RJ Brasil gosto muito de seus vídeos os vintage são raros bom trabalho

Don't forget the bird that sounds like an owl often heard on your videos
i love those cabinet tv's but there so rare here in holland
Nice - you have some really cool stuff in your garage :-)
Cheers, John

That Mercury combo unit looks interesting.
The mercury set was in the marylin monroe movie 7yr itch
Got to install these microwave ovens, custom kitchens and everything, got to move these refrigerators, got to move these color TVs.
Mial capacitors, carbon resistors, transistors with sockets (John Borlaug)...Batavia NY set... Looks like a DO6 chassis...
that siren sounds like its not having a good day to run
I have a mid 80s Unitech table top set
Shango imagine how much heat build up there would have been having 3 tube sets all in a single unventilated cabinet, realistically you wouldn't need central heating haha
are you going to get the tvs back after they get done filming.
I've never been interested in old TVs but this video is really interesting! I think it's cool seeing the old technology!
Man, it seems like there's less background noise at my place, and I'm 3 blocks from the busiest interchange on the east coast!
In today's money these set would of cost around 3000 dollar's each, you'd have expected them to last year's
Albert Tatlock you would also expect OLED TVs to last but that has yet to be seen
did you ever do the video that you mentioned at the end with these NOS or Low hour sets ? Thanks Shango066
WOW just WOW i wish i could have just one of these :)
Awesome video.
Most of that stuff got trashed years ago when solid state came out. What does the whiskers mean?
One of these days I would like to see a 60s Sylvania consolette with a halo light around the picture tube...
There was a Sylvania Halolight at one of the warehouses where Shango picked up a few tv's a few years ago.
Nice tvs what movie was these in if anyone would know
can't go wrong with the ambient noise
I know that in the 1970's Sylvania was owned by GTE ( General Telephone ) which was based here in Michigan......crappy phone service but I believe Sylvania products were still highly rated ! Hope that helps some. D. in Mi. aka KC8YOX

shango66 why do you think the 60s tabletops have become so rare compared to the 1950s sets? Even 1960s consoles are relatively easy to find.
Pull them out and we will watch the video. Keep them coming shango!

What ever happened to flammable cardboard inserts anyway?

I just cut up and dumped a load of termite infested OSB. They crawled up treated lumber to get to it.
Hey Shango, where do you store these Televisions?

The noisy-ass bird is a pigeon, and you're supposed to just shoot them :)
Forgot car alarms going off.
Too bad to have to gut a near new old stock TV. What, you're in LA County and there's no gunshots?
