  • A playthrough of Renovation's 1991 Sega Genesis platformer, Valis III.
It's largely the same game as the TurboGrafx CD version, but with a new stage (granted, it replaces the many stages that were cut in this version), the obviously different sound (though the Genesis version sounds awesome (unless compared to the CD's rockin' 80s synth vibe), missing cinemas, and it seems a few more layers of parallax than the Turbo's (even though the Turbo did an amazing job at faking, especially when compared to games like Ys III and Ninja Gaiden!).
Valis III is not my favorite game of the series (that honor would go to the remake of the first on the Super CD2), but the Genny's rendition is nonetheless a good port of a fantastic platformer.
I've had these recordings of the Valis games sitting on my hard drive for about a year according to the time stamp. I just stumbled onto them and realized I'd never uploaded them, so here you go!

Given that a nearly 500MB CD had to be smashed into a 1MB cartridge to port it over, Valis III is amazingly intact and awesome. It's not the CD version, but then, it's hardly fair to expect that it could be. The music is a particularly strong effort - but then if nothing else, the Valis series is renowned for its soundtracks, and this is hardly a counterexample :D

Also, the Sega Genesis version positively crushes the Turbo-CD version in the area of onscreen sprites and graphical quality -- Yuko and the rest of the game's characters and enemies are much more detailed, better-animated, and crisper in the Genesis port than on the TurboGrafx, plus the Sega version also has parallax background-scrolling, which the Turbo-CD version is missing.
Where the TurboGrafx version shines, of course, is in its CD-quality soundtrack and animated cutscenes, but when you get around to the actual main, onscreen gameplay, the Sega Genesis version is the one to beat. Renovation really delivered on this one.

@@nisus8 Except stages got cut out of the Genesis version, even if the game is still good on the Genesis, it just doesn't seem right if it's not 100% intact.

I think Sega CD ports would’ve been great for Valis.

This game was my favorite when I was a child. In 1991, these graphics were amazing.

This version was programmed by the very same man behind Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team! That makes two of my fav series connect wonderfully

Despite the PC version having more stages and being more complete; this was a better version. The gameplay in this version was way more balanced/stable than the poor hit boxes and platform detection of the PC engine version and the music shockingly sounds better here. I really wished the recently released collection on the Switch; included the Genesis/Mega Drive ports of these games as well. A missed opportunity, maybe they will rectify down the line.

The trilogy just came out on switch. It has Japanese voice acting lol this feels so bastardized now.

I remember playing the first game and this one and thinking “Boy this series is anime as fuck” 😂
Also the first stage bgm is still my favorite in the whole series. First stage bgm for the first game was great too.

There could have been a Sega CD version that has both the benefits of the Genesis version and the TurboGrafx CD version.

Stages missing, I also notice the enemy count per stage seems less than the PCE CD version, where enemies could overwhelm you at times.

The game was pretty fun until that moment at 37:26. And it gets worse from there on, what a bad level design.
