- In this video, we discuss brand new lenses for cataract surgery that have come out or are coming out in 2024. The first lens is a new version of the light-adjustable lens (LAL), the LAL+, which offers an extended depth of focus as well as the customizability of the traditional LAL intraocular lens. The second lens is the Odyssey multifocal intraocular lens, a new and improved multifocal intraocular lens for those who want to be glasses-free after surgery.

I hope you enjoy this video on updated lenses! Let me know if you have any questions or comments and thanks for watching ♥
Is there any research ongoing to see if cataracts can be treated rather than having lens removal? Do u think that will ever be achieved?
Doctor you forgot to mention that Johnson and Johnson have also introduced the Tecnis Puresee. It’s already available in Europe and will be released in the US shortly. It’s an EDOF lens. From initial reports I am hearing it’s performing better at near than Vivity. However I am waiting to hear more feedback on it. It’s great that you are covering new lenses. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for letting us know! It’s not going to be available in the US (at least we haven’t heard anything) so excited to see how the data looks in Europe!
Great info. Thanks so much for your videos. I am tempted to consider a vacation in Scottsdale when my time for an IOL comes.
Thanks for watching! You are always welcome to come by to see us if you are ever visiting :)
Thank you for sharing this information, Dr Lee. Very useful 👏💕
Glad it was helpful!
@@MicheleLeeMD your videos are my go to source on eyes related matters :)
Thank you Dr. Lee for reviewing these newer lenses.
Do you have any experience or thoughts on Lenstech's Clearview 3 IOL?
FDA approved in 2022. Claims of reduced halos, starburst etc are promising if proven out in broad number of cases.
Very interesting! Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm watching for the new accommodating lenses like the Lensgen Juvene. Those promise a new era of corrective lenses.
Yes, it will be interesting to see how it performs compared to what we have now. Lenses get better every year!
I’m getting an LAL+ in my right eye in a few hours! Nervous but excited to get vision back (I have a rapid PSC that has destroyed my vision in 6months)
Great information thank you. I’ve been reading good things about the Clearview 3 iol what are your thoughts?
It's a good lens. It's a bifocal IOL so there is just distance and near, not much of an intermediate focus. Patients do report less halos than other multifocal IOLs.
@@MicheleLeeMD thank you for the reply. Do you have any concerns with a hydrophilic lens?
For post RK patients, would you compare the LAL+ to the IC-8 Apthera?
What about accommodating lens, clear view 3 lenses
This is such helpful information, Dr. Lee! Thanks so much for keeping us up to date. 🙏 Every year I wait, I breathe a sigh of relief that I haven't moved forward. With myopia, an astigmatism, presbyopia and dry eyes, I really want to wait for a product that can reliably deliver a spectacle free result. And, so far my cataracts are not terribly progressed. 🤞🏼I've been wearing B&L Ultra multifocal for astigmatism for years and I never need readers. The comfort is sub optimal, but I accept the tradeoff as I am a very active person. Do any of these stand out as a clear choice for dry eye candidates? I'll stay tuned!
There have been some contact lens brands meant for dry eye, like the B&L infuse. Definitely something to ask your eye doctor!
@MicheleLeeMD Thank you. The B&L Infuse is available in multifocal and Infuse lenses with corrections for Astigmatism are coming soon, but it sounds like these will be separate products and unfortunately not one lense that does both. 😢 If you have information to the contrary, please let us know. Thanks again!
My professor at Moorfields will not use multifocals at all and he is the international expert - he will only use mono vision
Multifocals definitely have pros and cons - not for everybody!
Downside for lal lens is the cost. Is some cost covered by medicare
@@MicheleLeeMD apparently much harder to get used to and plan B ie surgical removal is not a good idea I gather
@@pacitaallen722 It's that way for all the lenses except the simple monofocal lenses as far as I know.
Does the new Odyssey MFL come in a toric version for those of us who need very strong astigmatism correction (not just mild toric power)?
Yes, it does come in multiple toric power and can correct astigmatism!
Good info. Thankfully I don't need yet. I assume the LAL+ is available for astigmatism correction, but what about Odyssey?
Yes, both can treat regular astigmatism.
@@MicheleLeeMD Thank you.
Do all of the new lenses require numerous follow up appointments after the eye has healed to set the lenses to the exact optimized vision of each individual?
Yes, one of the downsides of the LAL and LAL+ is that there are many visits to do the adjustments. Hope that answers your question!
I’d like to know you talk about one of them not doing well if you shake or the ice shake or something I have Tourette’s would Tourette’s be something that would be contraindicated with one of the new lenses that you were talking about I didn’t stop and write the name down or put this in. I watch the whole thing first I don’t remember which one specifically it was but I would love to know, would Tourette’s be contraindicated for use with either one of the new lenses that are coming out. One eye is bad enough for cataract surgery and they told me the other one was not I don’t know if that has changed or not. They said something about being allowed to do the other one if this one got done and I’m thinking that’s not the way it works. But also my dad had a very bad time with his cataract surgery back when they used cadaver pieces
Hi there, if you have a head tremor as part of your Tourette’s, you may not be a candidate for the light adjustable lens (LAL or LAL+) as these lenses require adjustments in the clinic setting. It is important to talk to your surgeon to see what options you have for your surgery. Best of luck!
I have 2 questions on the LAL-series lenses. The first is in regard to the need to wear UV-blocking sunglasses. Is this "forever" (a showstopper for me), or just until their shape is finalized by the "Lock-In" exposure? Assuming the latter is the case, what is the typical post-surgery time interval required until this can be completed? (guess 2-3 months) The second question is in regard to the long-term stability of this lens. Has any independent analysis been done to estimate how it will perform after a period of 20 years?
Don't do LAL monovision
