  • The Azraq Wetland Reserve is a nature reserve located in the town of Azraq in the eastern desert of Jordan. It was established in 1978 and covers an area of 12 square kilometers. The reserve is an oasis for migratory birds and was once fed by natural springs, which unfortunately dried up in 1992 due to excessive water pumping to support Amman's growing population. This led to a significant decline in migratory birds in the area. Despite these challenges, the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) maintains artificial springs to keep the site a tourist destination. The reserve has been described as being in a state of "ecological collapse," but RSCN continues to fight an uphill battle against rising population and growing demand for water. Efforts are ongoing to restore Azraq to 10% of its original size. The reserve features a Marsh Trail, a raised platform approximately 1.5 kilometers long, which allows visitors to walk through the reserve and observe the wildlife. There's also a rustic bird hide overlooking one of the reserve's lagoons, which is used for birdwatching.
