Okay?! It’s the most favorably reviewed comedy of 2023, so if it’s just okay then Hollywood collectively sucks at comedies, alright, that might be the case but this movie is an instant cult classic! It needs a wider release, half the AMC theaters near me didn’t screen it, insane! Obviously film appreciation is subjective and comedies are especially resistant to mass appeal but Bottoms currently has a 77 score on Metacritic, so Sydney you’re in the minority. Maybe give it another look?

This movie’s plot really bothered me. Why introduce a completely separate threat in the form of a rival football team we never see until the very end? Is Jeff not a good enough villain? Why is the triumphant ending of this movie centered around continuing to uphold the school’s values? WHAT ABOUT THAT IS SUBVERSIVE??? I loved the performances, but jeez either the movie got lost at the scripting stage or in the edit, and I can’t tell which.

my theater was cheering and roaring at the end, but I felt like it was just good. like a solid 6.5/10.
i thought it was heavily reliant on slap stick and sexual comedy, and while i really liked the almost surrealist take, i think i only laughed out loud like twice. otherwise, just little chuckles

Totally agree. This felt like a disappointment with the hype surrounding it and after Shiva Baby was such a strong directorial debut. It felt like Emma Seligman’s direction suffered from an upgrade in production value, but that could have been from the different tone this had from Shiva Baby. Glad people a lot of people love this one but it felt strange not laughing at as many jokes as the rest of the theater.

You summarized everything I was feeling about this movie. I really wanted to like it going into it. I feel like it suffered from poor pacing and a weak script. The premise to most of the jokes were good yet the execution and follow through was lacking. I’m sure editing had a lot to do with this but overall the movie didn’t know exactly what it wanted to be. It’s almost as if it wasn’t funny enough to be as absurd yet too absurd to have any cohesive storytelling or truly heartfelt moments. Overall not an awful movie but severely overrated 😂

I'm glad you didn't think that this movie was that great, because I've been going insane seeing all the superlative review and wondering what movie they were watching.I saw this movie yesterday, September 3. I have to say I thought it was terrible. The thing is, I wanted to like it. The idea of twisting the teen sex comedy on its head by having two lesbians play the main characters is a really good one. But, it's very poorly written and very poorly directed. The dialogue isn't witty or funny, the scenes are cut and pasted in and the ancillary characters are just cardboard cut-outs. I think their idea presented so many opportunities for hilarious and insightful scenes and they missed every one. If you would've presented the premise for this movie to Tina Fey, Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman, or Tig Navarro they would've made a movie 10 times funnier and with more insight and with more heart than this disappointment.

I agree with some of the humor being questionable, no one laughed at the suicidal, blowing up the school in my theater, although high school me gen z me prob would’ve laughed. Also yea the cliche “the secret comes out and I’m an asshole” is just too overdone. For me the biggest downsides were the messy structure of the film, the transitions were kinda weird at times. Everything else was hilarious to me tho, the club advisor Amelia Earhart speech and Havana rose liu facial expressions in the diner when something gets revealed were the best parts lol.
Idk if you’ve seen theater camp already but that’s def worth checking out for the actual funniest movie of the year.

Definitely agree that this movie is WILDLY over-hyped. I'm genuinely kind of shocked it's still rocking a 4.3 on letterboxd two weeks into it's release. Then again, it's only made half of it's $11 million budget back, so clearly it's only playing to it's devoted fanbase!

Hey Sydney, I watched Bottoms at the Angelika Film Center theater in NYC and I have to say, the crowd in my theater absolutely went wild during this movie, and I reciprocate that reaction. I thought the writing for this movie in terms of the dark humor and "edgy humor" worked really well. It did feel like Superbad but with gay girls as the two leads. And I completely bought into the surreal reality presented in the movie and I found the "offensive" jokes were actually executed really well.
Even though the movie in terms of emotional beats is pretty standard generic stuff, I really enjoyed the execution. The only part I was a bit down on was the ending where they literally murdered the rivals and that was a bit too much of an escalation even for this movie's reality.
Overall, I found this goofy in the perfect way and it's definitely in my top 10 so far having seen about 35 releases so far this year.

Seeing this with a group of queer gen z 20 somethings was actually incredible, I’d say about 90% of the humor landed for us. We’ve all struggled with mental health and suicide and there was a school sh***ing in my town, but none of that humor really came across as offensive to us. Infact it felt like they were making jokes about these things in the way that we would to cope. I’m also really shocked that you thought it could’ve gone further, to me it felt like a fever dream that me and my friends could’ve come up with drunk. It didn’t go as raunchy as like Superbad but I think that honestly wouldn’t have worked here, it went more surreal rather than raunch and I loved that. I totally understand some of your criticisms but to me this might be my favorite highschool comedy I’ve seen! I’m not a huge fan of Superbad I think it’s alright but this movie is what I wished Superbad was

I thought this movie was awful, honestly. The writing was really lazy, all of the characters were one-dimensional, boring, and not at all likeable. I thought the costume design and camerawork was really lazy as well. I thought the statutory rape subplot was really offensive and fucked up and it was barely acknowledged. I genuinely question the intelligence of anybody who seriously thought this was the best comedy of the year.

You should try watching it first to form your own opinion, instead of letting one person’s negative review sway you. This film is receiving high critical acclaim and both audiences that I watched it with were LOVING it. Haven’t heard a crowd that lively in a while. Waiting for VOD is a missed opportunity tbh.

@@jerryyanis Thank you for your comment -- I will take anything I may have missed below under consideration. After all, I'm a firm believer that there's always room to grow & for self-improvement! However, I hope my explanation will help you understand how my opinion & decision-making process are established. You'll probably won't reply to this, but at least I got my point across. This msg is lengthy only b/c I'm not hip to the abbreviated jargons/lingoes mainly used in today's language. 🤣😂
Considering your observation, after you read through my initial comment, to believe that Sydney's review [alone] was suffice enough for me to easily be swayed, I can respectfully assure you that I do have a mind of my own b/c I consider myself to be an independent-thinker. And simultaneously, I also consider myself to be a very optimistic & open-minded listener because, before I make a sound/solid decision or opinion, I prefer to do some research and/or listen to various POVs from the minds & concepts of professionals and/or regular folks, like myself. What's great about that process or type of mental conditioning is the fact that I can apply the same decision(s), I used before, on other situations or circumstances, if a need for it should arise later on.
Anyways, after being Sydney Volpe's longtime subscriber, I've come to learn over time that Sydney and I have very similar taste in movies, with the exception of a few movies that our opinions didn't align. These opposing opinions are often determined immediately from the start, and that comes from my only option which is based from the interests I discerned from watching the movie trailers. One example of a recent movie that my opinion didn't align with others, was Wes Anderson's "Asteroid City". Even though I heard many wonderful reviews from Sydney & other critics, I still felt no interest nor had any high regard to watch this star-studded movie. But later on when I changed my mind & watched it, purely out of boredom & curiosity, I discovered that my level of disinterestedness was spot on!
I trust that after you've read my explanation that you now have a better understanding of my thinking process. I further trust that your opinion has shifted, if not all, to believe that I have a strong mental core to hold my ground & make my own decision, based on the fact that I'm not weak-minded; hence, why my opinion cannot be easily "swayed" or manipulated.

    SPOILERS!!!
I would have enjoyed this more if my expectations weren’t so high. I interpreted a lot of the jokes as ad libbing, and there was so much of it that I felt like people were saying things that didn’t have any context as a joke over and over again, and that only works on me when the characters doing it are dumb. But I didn’t find any of these characters dumb, just underwritten. The visual style was inconsistent and the stunts were mediocre. I realized I wanted more from the screenplay when Josie and Isabelle kiss at the end and I felt a spark of something that, if done right, probably could have made me cry. There is also an issue with feminist(?) comedies where the funniest character is the male caricature, and that should not be who is stealing every scene in a movie highlighting women. I could excuse it in Barbie because Ken was one of the main characters, but here Jeff just served as a reminder of the quality laughs that scripted commitment can get you. I was let down by Shiva Baby too, so maybe I’m just not as big on Emma Seligman as everyone else. Bottoms is a great time, but it is not the masterpiece I was looking forward to. This is why you should always go into a movie with no expectations, but I’m too obsessed with letterboxd to manage that 🙂
I think I was expecting more Barbie vibes but instead I got a collage of past teen comedies. I laughed a lot but that doesn't make a film for me.
