  • The Transbucegi Highway, also known as DJ 713, is a road that connects Romania's main highway network to some of the highest elevations of its protected natural parks. The road was just recently opened, in 2013, and is often blocked from December to May due to the significant snowfall that can occur on such a high mountain plateau. Even though the asphalt road is brand-new, the surrounding area is full of old transhumance paths, hiking trails and gravel roads. Tourism has been a major objective due to the area's proximity to some of the largest towns in the country, including the capital Bucharest, and the Bucegi natural park's abundance of attractions for all tastes.
Even since the 19th century the area was regarded by the ruler of the time, the king Carol I as especially picturesque and wild, hosting a wide variety of species, and was decreed as a protected space by law. The communist regime built a robust infrastructure featuring multiple cable cars, access roads, monuments, hotels and even the artificial Lake Bolboci by damming the Ialomita River.
On short hikes, bike rides or even while driving, it is common to see wild foxes, majestic wild goats climbing jagged mountain peaks, brown bears, trouts in the rivers and streams, grazing cows and sheep herds. Ornithologists have a lot to discover as well, as the area hosts all sorts of wild birds of prey, all the while, experienced herbalists can identify many rare species of flowers and trees, including a prehistoric pine tree holding on there since the time of the last great Ice Age.
The are is easily accessible by the road I mentioned, but also by other gravel roads and cable cars starting from Sinaia and Busteni. It is also possible to hike from these towns all the way to the mountain peak in the area, named Varful Omu which reaches a height of 2514 meters above the sea level. One might also be interested in the mysterious natural Sphinx or the Ialomita Cave and the adjacent Orthodox Monastery, which is said to guard the gates of hell inside the cave.
The following video is the first part of a series of videos exploring the Area, and in this one we're travelling along the following route: goo.gl/maps/m92uywJb4JtxtwJ76
