The old men in some way knew , possibly by experience that some areas are not to be used for vegetables or animal husbandry. A good example is Dowgas, near Burngullow. It's etymological roots being Dowr & Gas, an imperative order to " leave the water alone" in ancient Cornish . You'll end up with five legged sheep or cancers if drinking the water of the tributary of the river Fal in St. Stephen in Brannel parish.
Hey Mark, try the same test at St Day. I remember at school my geology teacher saying that St Day was most likely one of the most radioactive villages in Europe due to all the granite.
Recently visited the lane by the bridge and not trespassing I found a 10 microsievert + hotspot on the ground just before the gate. Trying to get permission to visit the site from the landlord is more difficult than winning Euro millions.
I live on a farm near the mine and studying geology at A level. I didn’t realise south Terras was a uranium mine, might change the route I walk my dog 😂😂
It really depends on the Unit of measure. And device used, From what I can’t tell the detector is a scintillation probe. Model 44-2 which detects Gamma radiation. Then the meter being used has multiple scales. 01. 1. 10. 100. 1000. Using a 44-2 scintillation detector depending On your geographic location at time 1 setting normal background should be approximately 700-1200 Counts per minute. That is 7-1200 Gamma decays per minute. But that number will vary greatly depending on geographic location and ground composition. Also Temperature has some effect on The photomultiplier tube that is used in this detector probe.
mark i was wopndering about this and i was thinking about the safty of road engineers and general work, the productin and distribution of dust in that work. are the workers protected while working? decontaminated before going home? is there a 'serious' health and safety issue that needs some thought?

Now, THERE's a way of keeping warm this winter.
One day I'll get on down there on a collecting trip. ;)
Amazing levels.
Most folk use a garmin or tomtom to find their way around, not us Cornish!

Yes, localised gamma radiation dose rate just off the road by the bridge > 10uSv/h in Jan 2022.
I need to visit Cornwall someday!
I was wondering how rare it it to find uranium at the mine and if its ok for me to snoop around there.

Similar background radiation to what you get onboard an intercontinental flight :-)
Hot spot :o
Hi Mark, what is an average / safe reading? Thank you

Much higher readings down the little track still
Where is that?

Terras, not Teras!
Edward Bol Sorry, yes my bad! I uploaded it a month ago with the shoddy spelling and only realised this morning I had not published it!
