  • Why is Hawaii a Part of the United States?
In 1959, the United States of America gained its 50th member. Hawaii, which had been a territory of the U.S. since 1898, earned its place as the final star on the Stars and Stripes; becoming the beloved vacation spot and island paradise we now know today. Hawaii’s image is associated with a beauty of culture and experiences, ranging from luaus to hula dancing to volcanoes and Pearl Harbor - but much of the territory’s original history and culture is now unknown to the American masses. And that has a lot to do with how the U.S. acquired Hawaii…

That's not a justification for the illegal overthrow of a sovereign nation. The local businessmen overthrow the Queen, put her under house arrest and when the locals figured out that US govt was NOT going to stop the overthrow, they wanted to stage a violent rebellion and the Queen balked again bc she did not want to see so many Hawaiians killed. Then, she was forced to sign away her sovereign rights forever.

I have native Hawaiian cousins from the North Shore of Oahu. Whenever people see us together and I tell them we're cousins, it usually causes confusion because of how white I am and how dark skinned they are. My aunt married their dad so we're not blood related, however we treat each other as brothers. They tell me of certain neighborhoods where whites are looked down upon, and it's only gotten worse over the decades. Luckily since we are family I never run into any issues when I'm with them at parties or gatherings, but I really don't blame the natives for having that outlook. Especially after watching this and learning more about how Hawaii was taken from them.

In a perfect world then I think yes obviously it would have been preferable if it had continued to modernize as its own independent nation or if at the very least it had been left up to the indigenous Hawaiian population to decide their own fate. But I can also acknowledge that at this point that Hawaii is so integrated with the USA that it would be a nightmare to try to untangle it at this point wether it was acquired rightly or not. Things could be done however absolutely better to protect and recognize the indigenous population, and to safeguard the the overall Hawaiian population from priced/developed out of their own homes from the vacation industry and wealthy mainland American families simply wanting a vacation home.

I see a lot of people who keep saying #FreeHawaii in the comments... as a descendant of native Hawaiians who lived on the islands when the Kingdom was overthrown, the idea of freeing Hawaii toady is absolutely absurd.
Yes, the overthrow was bad and Grover Cleveland should've done more to stop it when it was in motion. But Hawaii's economy today is built on tourism... primarily AMERICAN tourism, because it's a domestic destination that's exotic to travel to - NO passport, foreign currencies, or excessive duties/fees needed. You take that away, and you'll see a sharp decline in tourism to the islands.
On top of that, now the islands have to find a new way to provide for citizens and subsidize it's economy, now that the US & its people are out of the question. That also leads into military support... Pearl Harbor and Hawaii's strategic location are perfect for any country seeking to have dominance over the Pacific Ocean militarily. There's no way Hawaii would be able to stand up to other nations on their own if another nation decided to take the islands for themselves (i.e. China). They'll either be conquered again, or forced to become reliant on another larger nation in the region.
The Kingdom of Hawaii was a marvel of its time - a civilized kingdom whose people embraced Christianity and its Western values openly, without force very early on. Who was one of the very few islands not conquered by foreign powers (no, the Union Jack on Hawaii's flag did not mean it was a British Colony. Go look up the history of the Kingdom's flag), and had good, consistent relations with many major foreign nations. Who were able to develop and embrace an unique culture and people all of their own. Let's work to revive the culture and legacy of the Kingdom, and not let the whitewashing of culture that is taking place in major cities all throughout the world, happen in Hawaii. That goes for other places too - Texas, the South, the Midwest, etc.

The proposed 1893 constitution was an attempt to restore political power to Native Hawaiians. I would not characterize it as being a restoration of absolute monarchy. The monarchy stopped being an absolute monarchy in 1840 with the first constitution which was incredibly progressive for its time.

My Mom spent a good chunk of her early years in Hawaii, where she was bullied for being White.
The racial aspect is actually a relatively new phenomenon (1960s onwards), and it stems from the island's identity crisis going all the way back to Queen Liliʻuokalani. The coup was launched by the Hawaiian Oligarchy, which is about 50% native, and served to benefit the most from an American takeover, since they owned most of the sugar plantations.
They still holds a huge sway over the archipelago's affairs to this day, having converted most of their plantations to resorts.

Our people did not want to "" become Americans" Only people who had deeds to their land had the right to vote. Funny, but the only ones with a printing press were the missionaries. Hawaiians were an. Oral society, with lands that were shared and passed from generation. .President Bill Clinton signed an apology for the ILLEGAK OVERTHROW OF THE HAWAIIAN KINGDOM and the UnlawFul imprisonment of our Queen Lili'uokalani, until the Annexation paper were signed.
