- Why is Hawaii a Part of the United States?
In 1959, the United States of America gained its 50th member. Hawaii, which had been a territory of the U.S. since 1898, earned its place as the final star on the Stars and Stripes; becoming the beloved vacation spot and island paradise we now know today. Hawaii’s image is associated with a beauty of culture and experiences, ranging from luaus to hula dancing to volcanoes and Pearl Harbor - but much of the territory’s original history and culture is now unknown to the American masses. And that has a lot to do with how the U.S. acquired Hawaii…

MISTAKE:
Your map shows Honalulu on the island of Kauai. Honalulu is actually on the island of Oahu, adjacent to Pearl Harbor.
Of course! I’ve been to Hawaii. It’s just like any other state in the Union.
French colonisation of West Africa
Yes of course it should be.
Here for this. I was born in Cincinnati Ohio, joined the Marines at 17 and was stationed in Hawaii. Huge culture shock, and most people don't all know the information made in this video.
And that is depressing to me.
of course they don't know. it will spark nationalism to Hawaiians if it were taught in their educational system.
@@gabbytay why would Hawaii want to leave the US? All Hawaiians get their basic needs like water from the rest of the US. Hawaii's economy is surviving because of the rest of the US. Without the US, Hawaii would collapse and be conquered by someone else.
@@theawesomeman9821 exactly. Why would xinjiang and tibet leave china. Their infrastructure and economy is running because of china. Yet the western world are pro independence towards them. Im just stating facts brother. Hawai was a independent country way back. And was forced to submission same as xinjiang and tibet.
@ay first of all, no Western nation supports Xinjiang and Tibet leaving China, the West doesn't like China but it doesn't want to create a power vacuum by giving expansionist Russia and India the ability to replace China as a threat. Second of all, the US took Hawaii at the request of Hawaii's republican government, that's a volantary ascension not a conquest.
Hawaiian nationalism is not as big as you think it is with the native Hawaiians. A recent poll was taken and over 85%, including those who dislike the US would never vote for independence for Hawaii if given the chance.
@@theawesomeman9821 not a conquest. Tell that to new mexico, california, and texas. Pretty sure the whole USA was from conquest. Say hello to your english, german, dutch, french papis for me. And didnt you just see the video, on how foreigners put pressure to hawaian government? This guy...
Thanks for making a video on this topic which covers most of the historical facts without all of the emotional charge and romanticism other videos get wrapped up in. And double thanks for taking the time to get most of your pronunciations pretty good. It's appreciated.
It always starts with "missionaries" and ends with euro-decendants owning everything. Even the native people.

Great video; not sure if you realize you have Honolulu, on the island of Kaui. It should be on the island of Oahu.
One can't help but feel a fair amount of sympathy for Queen Liliuokalani. She was bullied into losing her throne when she was just trying to undo some wrongs that had been done to her family and people.
Can't say for certain. This video makes it seems that way, but the details are vague and I've learned in my years that when you see a political video on anything, you're always only being shown the half that makes you favor the side they want you to.
No need to feel bad for her, her family conquered the other Hawaiian Islands and subjugated the peoples there to form their kingdom. The US did the same to her that her ancestors did to the other Islands. It's easy to point the fingers but the facts are all kingdoms and nations, big and small have conquered and subjugated others at one point or the other in history. No nation has clean hands.
@@zjeee😂 the inconvenient truth that they always fail to mention.

Why critique a critique when the initial critique had facts and logic supporting it?
US: Hawaii cannot be given to locals for geopolitical reasons of pacific defence.
Same happened for other islands:
Marshall Islands, Guam, temporarily Ryukyu, Samoa, Fed. States of Micronesia and 10+ more islands in Pacific.
Those years have been the high time of Western Imperialism by the British, French, and Americans. Germans tried to start, Spanish, Dutch, and Portugiese were in decline ...
That's not a justification for the illegal overthrow of a sovereign nation. The local businessmen overthrow the Queen, put her under house arrest and when the locals figured out that US govt was NOT going to stop the overthrow, they wanted to stage a violent rebellion and the Queen balked again bc she did not want to see so many Hawaiians killed. Then, she was forced to sign away her sovereign rights forever.
I have native Hawaiian cousins from the North Shore of Oahu. Whenever people see us together and I tell them we're cousins, it usually causes confusion because of how white I am and how dark skinned they are. My aunt married their dad so we're not blood related, however we treat each other as brothers. They tell me of certain neighborhoods where whites are looked down upon, and it's only gotten worse over the decades. Luckily since we are family I never run into any issues when I'm with them at parties or gatherings, but I really don't blame the natives for having that outlook. Especially after watching this and learning more about how Hawaii was taken from them.
Well we're all humans, one single race. Besides, I can't help but think the world would be more just and better if under one goverment
@@dinoguy6177I don't see how one government would make the world a better place. There will always be a minority that benefits from the government and the majority that are not represented by the government. A one world government would only compound the issue.
@perceivedvelocity9914 I'm a minority, things aren't better either way for people like me. But if the world was under one world democratic govement, or at least something like the EU, things would be better for everyone.

In a perfect world then I think yes obviously it would have been preferable if it had continued to modernize as its own independent nation or if at the very least it had been left up to the indigenous Hawaiian population to decide their own fate. But I can also acknowledge that at this point that Hawaii is so integrated with the USA that it would be a nightmare to try to untangle it at this point wether it was acquired rightly or not. Things could be done however absolutely better to protect and recognize the indigenous population, and to safeguard the the overall Hawaiian population from priced/developed out of their own homes from the vacation industry and wealthy mainland American families simply wanting a vacation home.
I see a lot of people who keep saying #FreeHawaii in the comments... as a descendant of native Hawaiians who lived on the islands when the Kingdom was overthrown, the idea of freeing Hawaii toady is absolutely absurd.
Yes, the overthrow was bad and Grover Cleveland should've done more to stop it when it was in motion. But Hawaii's economy today is built on tourism... primarily AMERICAN tourism, because it's a domestic destination that's exotic to travel to - NO passport, foreign currencies, or excessive duties/fees needed. You take that away, and you'll see a sharp decline in tourism to the islands.
On top of that, now the islands have to find a new way to provide for citizens and subsidize it's economy, now that the US & its people are out of the question. That also leads into military support... Pearl Harbor and Hawaii's strategic location are perfect for any country seeking to have dominance over the Pacific Ocean militarily. There's no way Hawaii would be able to stand up to other nations on their own if another nation decided to take the islands for themselves (i.e. China). They'll either be conquered again, or forced to become reliant on another larger nation in the region.
The Kingdom of Hawaii was a marvel of its time - a civilized kingdom whose people embraced Christianity and its Western values openly, without force very early on. Who was one of the very few islands not conquered by foreign powers (no, the Union Jack on Hawaii's flag did not mean it was a British Colony. Go look up the history of the Kingdom's flag), and had good, consistent relations with many major foreign nations. Who were able to develop and embrace an unique culture and people all of their own. Let's work to revive the culture and legacy of the Kingdom, and not let the whitewashing of culture that is taking place in major cities all throughout the world, happen in Hawaii. That goes for other places too - Texas, the South, the Midwest, etc.
I just want to point out that if Hawaii had a referendum for or against independence today and only native Hawaiians were allowed to vote, 85% would vote to stay within the US.

@4:06, the graphic shows the British travelling through the Panama Canal in 1874. The Panama Canal wasn't finished until 1914! That's a bit of a miss by the editor.
One area of information not entered into this video is the threat, real or imagined by the USA of Britain, Japan or even Germany seizing the islands and controlling a vast area of the central Pacific. This was an ever present worry of the USA and it's own Hawaiian residents, not necessarily the local native born residents.
Still don't justify illegally annexing of a sovereign nation, that would be like the USA annexing all of Mexico or canada because they were worried about a foreign power invading through adjacent countries. There's no legal valid basis here for occupation and annexation... it was wrong then, regardless of the circumstances, and it's still wrong today under any circumstances.
Ah yes, the ol' "we'll invade just in case someone else may do so".

It was also 1893. The British Empire didn't really do a whole lot more expanding in that time.
Why lie?
Sad this video ignored the native people of Hawaii wanting Independence, or the US federal law that bans direct trading with Hawaii. Instead all imports must go past the islands to California and then go to Hawaii, making life extremely expensive on the island. This was done as a successful attempt to force natives out to the continent, forcing natives that stayed into de facto servitude, while giving the rich colonizer’s extreme power over the natives lives.
It is crazy to think that there is a law that bans trade. I'm sure that doubles the cost, at the least.
Same in Puerto Rico
Dude a ridiculously small minority of native Hawaiians want "independence"
8:45 the transcript says "1894" and the narrator clearly says "1984"
I thought I was crazy.
Same that's happening in Haiti right now.
I’m from Hawai’i and I wanted to point out that the Bayonet constitution disenfranchised the Native Hawaiian and Immigrant populations and they lost nearly all their voting power to rich white land owners. The proposed 1893 constitution was an attempt to restore political power to Native Hawaiians. I would not characterize it as being a restoration of absolute monarchy. The monarchy stopped being an absolute monarchy in 1840 with the first constitution which was incredibly progressive for its time.
Progressive? Are you talking about the same royal family that married brothers to sisters and executed anyone that thought about independence from their kingdom?
Nice sharing
While Hawai’i did have its flaws, it did have its pros as well. They had good relationships with the Europeans and Americans, actually recognizing Argentina before anyone else. They prioritized education and were keenly invested into technology. That is why Iolani Palace had electricity before the White House.
Because America took it

Hawaii was a constitutional monarchy before the bayonet constitution. Also Liliuokalani didn’t change it to an absolute monarchy. That’s something that people get wrong.

My Mom spent a good chunk of her early years in Hawaii, where she was bullied for being White.
The racial aspect is actually a relatively new phenomenon (1960s onwards), and it stems from the island's identity crisis going all the way back to Queen Liliʻuokalani. The coup was launched by the Hawaiian Oligarchy, which is about 50% native, and served to benefit the most from an American takeover, since they owned most of the sugar plantations.
They still holds a huge sway over the archipelago's affairs to this day, having converted most of their plantations to resorts.
White people complaining about being bullied for being white is probably the funniest thing to me
@@Johnnyboyking1 You mistakenly believe me to be complaining. I am not.

Racial bias and bullying was common in the 20th century globally, thanks to God being abandoned as our source of brotherhood and community. No race, ethnicity, or color was exempt.
