    I have 3 of these in my 3'x3' grow box under my LED panel, 24 hour light with some other vegetation. They're a year old now and a little over 1' tall, but beginning to grow rapidly now, 2 leaves per month. I keep the temperature in the low-mid 70s and the humidity is in the comfort zone range. They're in 5gal containers of organic potting mix and I feed with an even NPK fertilizer that's 20-20-20. These do not do well at all outside in Texas at any time of the year, so they're definitely indoor only plants here. It gets way too hot outside most of the year and often stays too hot even at night.

      Oh wow. We only get a couple days in the triple digits here in Maryland. Haven't had any long heatwaves in a few years either. Sounds like you're having success growing them inside so far. Hope you have some flowers soon.

    Hi, I just purchased my bird of paradise. Do I need to do anything to it in the winter time? Do I need to cut it back and cover it with a winter bag or just leave it as is in the pot?

    • @ricksgardendiary
      @ricksgardendiary  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi there. 👋🏾 I bring mine into an unheated enclosed porch where it gets some light. The temperature doesn't get below freezing. Keep it on the dry side, maybe watering only once a month. No need to cut it back. The leaves may get scale so just look out for that. It put mine outside again in April once the nights are consistently above 40F

    Can they bloom all year round if kept in perfect conditions

    • @ricksgardendiary

      Hi there. I'm not sure how they would do in a milder climate. For me they take a rest during the hottest time of the year and bloom fall through the end of spring.

    Hello, your plants are stunning 👍🏻 Mines had it's first bloom, was so excited. Now after a while it has perrished. What do I do next? Do I cut away the whole spear (bloom and stem) or do I leave as it is? Thanks in advance for your advice :)

    • @ricksgardendiary
      @ricksgardendiary  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Fabian 👋🏾. You can cut away the bloom once it is finished. You can also cut away the stem or leave it. It would eventually turn brown and dry up and you can cut it off then.

    The plant is wonderful
    I love it so much, I live in the eastern countries of Iraq, and this plant should be covered in the summer
    But in your garden, why not plant it in the garden?
    Although it is very beautiful in the pot and looks healthy and fresh

      Hi Saif. Thanks for your question. Our winters are much too cold. We get a lot of snow and it is often below freezing. They would not survive. I bring them indoors in the winter.

    • @ricksgardendiary
      @ricksgardendiary  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once the flowers open they last a couple of weeks but it takes a few months for the spear to form.

      I live in zone 9b Louisiana.
      I grow my BOP directly in the ground. Been having the BOP for years.
      This winter we had a hard freeze with ice.
      I had covered my BOP.
      But the strong winds at night blew off part of my frost cover that covered plant.
      Temperature went down to 27°.
      Ice pellets were on the plant and part of the cover.
      The outer leaves that were touched by the ice turned brown.
      The leaves in the center of the plant were protected from the top leaves. The leaves untouched by the ice pellets stayed green.
      Waiting for it to make flower stalks and bloom
