That's because the SD70ACE's were never a product of Caterpillar...Electro Motive Division of General Motors has always been the only manufacturer to them. All of them have the 710 G3B's which are two stroke V16's with 4,300 HP.The numbering "710" confirms how many cubic inches there are in each of the cylinders.General Motors for many years was fond of building two stroke diesel, just look at Detroit Diesel. Caterpillar is the parent company to Electro Motive Division and at that owns Progress Rail which Electro Motive Division is their subsidiary. The SD70ACE-T4's are Electro Motive Division built but Caterpillar powered. The four stroke 1010J's they have are the rebuilt and corrected version of the four stroke 265H's that use to be in the SD90MAC's & SD90MACH's which were hunks of junks.Caterpillar took the 265H's and made the 1010J's,rebuilding the entire prime movers and making what Electro Motive Division failed to do.
Actually for all those wondering, the prime mover / engine block design in this locomotive has been around since the 1980's when it was developed by General Motors and has been proven ever since. Think of this as an ex-GM design, before CAT bought out Electro-Motive.
@janetelizabeth That's not even close to the truth. Caterpillar owns Progress Rail and is the parent company to Electro Motive Division.Electro Motive Division, even before Caterpillar was involved,is a subsidiary to Progress Rail. Take a good look at the EMD SD70ACE-T4's,the prime movers they have were improved and redesigned by Caterpillar. The Caterpillar 1010J's are what the EMD 265H's failed to become, which is what originally was in both the SD90MAC's and SD90MACH's. The 265H's singlehandedly were the worst prime movers EMD ever made, building a four stroke engine from scratch trying to be compliance with the EPA.Later on they were rebuilt by Norfolk Southern and sent elsewhere, the corrected versions of the 265H's saw usage in Asia and China, but not again in North America and Canada after the mechanical failures they had.All of that is why Union Pacific and Canadian Pacific stayed with the SD9043MAC's,which most have now been rebuilt into SD70ACU's with Norfolk Southern and Canadian Pacific. The 265H's were attempted to uphold 6,000 HP to compete with General Electric's AC6000CW's,both locomotives in the end were not very reliable or durable. With Caterpillar creating the solutions,if T4 EPA compliance wasn't a thing, they easily could've pushed out that same horsepower in the Tier Fours with the 1010J's,which have proven to be solid as can be.
Love it!!!! This will help miners all around the world. How much did the locomotive cost in all from top to bottom and from side to side?? LOVE THE LOCOMOTIVE A LOT!!! How long did take to build the locomotive??
I lived in Peoria Illinois. Caterpillar World Headquarters. They put on a show but behind the scenes they treat contractors and employees as though they are dirt because "we are caterpillar" . ALWAYS!!! Low bidder get the work. Then they spit them out and throw there contracts out for bid. I've Personally witnessed these repairs and was shocked that this took place in the plant.

Come on Cat you guys gotta get EMD back in this race because GE are killing you guys. GE has a new tier 4 Gevo on the rails. Don't get me wrong I like both GE and EMD but if EMD doesn't get its act together Gevo's could rule the world.
Really? You don't get it, do you? If someone makes a product cheaper then it's going to get the largest share of the market. GE locomotives are JUNK. Just how do you think they get the nickname of "toasters"? because more of them catch fire than EMD locomotives do.
EMD used to be boxier and GE use to be more rounded, SD40-2 vs C36-7. GE got boxier and EMD got rounder for a bit with stuff like the SD70M, now they're both getting boxier.

Built in London, Ontario. Does that mean that Cat have taken over from GM EMD? Would any future GM EMD JT42CWR locomotives, known here in the UK as Class 66 (backbone of the modern British rail freight industry), be built by Cat?
"formidable38" is correct. It is still EMD Power. This is NOT a "Caterpillar" unit per-say. In fact it doesn't say "Cat" or "Caterpillar" or even "Powered by Caterpillar" anywhere on this unit. The only thing remotely CAT on this is the Yellow paint. EMD is owned by Progress Rail which is owned by Caterpillar. All this unit is, is another EMD demonstrator for a new SD70ACe. All Caterpillar (the parent company) used it for was to haul new CAT equipment for a publicity stunt.
I'd love to meet this baby in person...she's gorgeous and well-built! If she ever happens to show up in Atlanta, GA, I want to meet her up close and personal. Hallo, da kommt man als Lokführer aus Deutschland nur ins staunen und würde sich gerne mal solche Loks anschauen können und eventuell auch mal ein Stück fahren dürfen! Was für Technik und welche Größe diese Lok haben! (german)
AC6000CW, SD80 and SD90 locomotives were phased out. So at this time the most powerful locomotives in North America have around 4400-4600 HP. Locomotives rated at 5000HP or 6000HP are history.
Both EMD and GE failed big time with the SD90MAC & MACH as well as the AC6000CW. The only successful single-handed high horsepower locomotives were the EMD SD80MAC. The SD80MAC saw a short run because Conrail was initially the only railroad that owned them, after the merge most went to Norfolk Southern and some to CSX until the trade deal which Norfolk Southern got all of them in later years. They were sold to Progress Rail and unfortunately scrapped. The last of them are owned by Canadian Pacific being used as parts donors,in storage, for their SD9043MAC's and SD70ACU rebuilds. The problem with the SD90MAC & H was absolutely no harmonic balancing which caused extensive internal vibration leading to broken motor mounts, crankshafts, and other critical components.Even though the 265H was not reliable or durable, later on they were rebuilt by Norfolk Southern when Union Pacific and Canadian Pacific discontinued their service. The 265H ended up only seeing prolonged service in Asia and China while EMD came out with the SD9043MAC having the 710-G3B for both railroads. Finally, the problem with the AC6000CW were the turbochargers from Deutz MKM.Every three months on the dot any AC6000CW had to be sent into a shop to get a turbocharger replacement. They suffered from burning out their seals and having backpressure from the crankshafts, and if the issue wasn't addressed and dealt with they literally would "explode" and send pieces flying. Union Pacific completely rebuilt and derated them into C44ACM's using 7HDL-16's.The units under CSX were designated as AC6044CW's having their horsepower lowered and they actually had no errors whatsoever with a drop like that still using their factory 7HDL-20's.Union Pacific still has them in service,CSX sold them to Progress Rail to keep them in storage longer to evade taxes. Finally, the 1010J in the SD70ACE-T4 is actually based on the 265H,it has the same block and parts, but is completely rebuilt and modernized.Basically it's what the 265H failed to be from the start thanks to Caterpillar. The 265H originally was 6,000 HP so if Tier Four EPA regulations didn't exist Caterpillar actually could've aimed it at 6,000 HP.
That must have one of the last engines built at EMD in London, Ontario, Canada, before Caterpillar locked out the employees and moved everything, lock, stock and barrel to the United States.
I read they just liquidated almost everything in the London facility instead of taking it to Indiana, because of tax or regulatory reasons. They only ever had the shop in London because of old protectionist laws anyway.
Bushrod Rust Johnson Caterpillar bought EMD when GM went bankrupt. The unionized workers tried to negotiate a new contract, but Caterpillar just shut it down and moved all the manufacturing equipment to Indiana and Mexico.
Charles Damery Actually Greenbriar Equity and Berkshire Partners bought EMD from GM. It was the best thing that ever happened to EMD, to be separated from that train wreck. Caterpillar bought it from Greenbriar and Berkshire a few years later. The problem with being forced to renew contracts in perpetuity is that it is next to impossible to adjust wages and benefits the other way when the market situation demands it.
Bushrod Rust Johnson And it put about 1,200 workers out on the streets, London Ontario, had it's military base shutdown, it's Labatt's breweries was bought by the Belgians, non of this was opposed by the Canadian Federal government which makes the Republican Tea Party look like Boy Scouts. They've sold off Canada, even CP an CN are American controlled even though they still list their headquarters in Canada.
Charles Damery No government is competent enough to will outcomes in to being, no matter how much it tries to manipulate economics. Reality will override it eventually. Nobody is entitled to any particular economic outcome, at the expense of voluntary interaction and freedom of association. When people are suddenly out of work like that, they are supposed to be able to eventually find something else to do. Maybe not at the comfort they had previously, but something. State imposed barriers to self employment and artificially high labor compliance costs (and I don't mean wages) restrict that from happening expediently more than anything else these days. It looks like Canada is finally scaling back its mercantilism. It is going to hurt, in the short term. The global economy can not be resisted though.
2-stroke diesel? How is that efficient? How much fuel does it consume? Can it run smoothly? And is it lubricated by fuel or oil pan? Or is an oil pan not possible for that size?
You have no idea what are you talking about. Of course it has lubricating oil. What do you think? That a two stroke diesel is the same thing as your one cylinder, gasoline driven two stroke engine of your lawn mower? First of all read technical documentation about two stroke DIESEL engines and then comment on youtube. Of course two stroke diesel engines are better that those with four strokes. Efficiency is only a bit lower in a two stroke diesel than in a four stroke diesel but is compensated by the two stroke engine being more powerfull and more durable and having a much more simpler maintenance.
It's not a moped motor - it has 4 exhaust valves, the air inlet is made by intake ports in the cylinder liner. It's lubricated like a 4 stroke engine, the only difference is it has more power at the same displacement because it has one working cycle each rotation, not only every second. Here you can see one run th-cam.com/video/z6WhVu-UIKA/w-d-xo.html
I just don't understand how on Earth a 2-stroke gets better emissions than a 4! I'm not tremendously familiar with emissions regulations, tho.... Maybe it's about how much oxygen they have in the exhaust? Or the O2 to CO2 ratio, maybe? In that case, I suppose a 2 stroke could be better, but....I don't know. That just doesn't seem to make sense to me after working on and with the old Detroits and a couple old EMD engines over the years. Years ago, they did away with 2 strokes for that very reason! ????
Two strokes don't meet tighter emissions regulations than four strokes. It is quite the opposite. It is why Tier 4 locomotives are built ONLY with four stroke engines. But two strokes can meet Tier 3 without any problem.
Should have mentioned how cat wanted concessions from its london Ontario plant workers in the form of a 50% pay cut and knowing the work force would reject it shut down the plant and move all production to plants in the states & Mexico where they ultimately got what they wanted. Now EMDs sales have sunk even further as railways have caught on that their products are unreliable. That's what happens when you pay a skilled tradesman 15$ an hour, you get a half assed job. I work with these things everyday and let me tell you there is a considerable difference in the quality between London built products vs the muncie Indiana, Mayfield's Kentucky, and Mexican built models.
EMD did produce a 4 stroke prime mover in the 6000 hp 265H for the SD90.I think the sd 70 uses the 710 (710 cubic inches per cylinder) 16 cylinder.Cost is probably over two million per locomotive.
yes but the SD90mac (6000HP) was rejected by most railroads because it was a track killer. Too much torque, so much that it "ate" the track and itself. that's why most class 1 RR (Union Pacific, etc) use the SD90/43Mac (4300hp rated) units
I don.t think that was the reason. The four axle GP60 puts out almost 1000HP per axle and the SD90 with advanced traction control and AC traction motors is more controllable.I believe it is more efficient to buy more 4000-4400HP locomotives. The SD90 was supposed to take the place of two locos, but if it broke down on a train with only one unit you are stuck ,if you have two 3000-4400HP locos and one dies you can still move.
rj4590 there is a reason I said torque and not HP. HP is a relative figure, in short meaning its a useless term. (Torque x rpm)/5252 = HP if I remember correctly. Anyway back to the SD90Mac-H plagued with chassis, engine and electrical problems. the chassis could not handle the *6000hp's torque, which is why the more common and successful SD90/43Mac happened *4400hp There is a massive gap between the GP60 and SD90 in weight. UP still owned *6000hp units from both EMD and GE (GE's AC6000CW used for fast freight) but the power jains to *6000hp also came with a setup in fuel consumption.
that's right the biggest joke out there no matter who owns it there is no comparison between the SD70Ace and the CW4400AC anybody who has worked with them will tell you the GE will drag that EMD al over the place the SD's are the slowest loading in power and are a real joke in dynamic Csx has just about quit buying that crap and are mainly a GE railroad now
No. The prime movers that have powered the SD70's have been around since 1996 and were developed and built by GM's Electro Motive Diesel (EMD). Its most certainly not a CAT engine! CAT have just bought the whole of EMD from GM.
Union Pacific should have snuck in here in the middle of the night, kidnapped this loco, quickly painted it in UP colors and sent it out on the next double stack! they already have hundreds just like it, how would anyone else find it....

THAT never happened! GM refused to sell to Caterpillar. OLD EMD was bought by Greenbriar
Very good thank you for the video it reminds me when I was a kid going to work with my dad at Burlington Northern rail yard thank you again
Love it!!!!
This will help miners all around the world.
How much did the locomotive cost in all from top to bottom
and from side to side??
LOVE THE LOCOMOTIVE A LOT!!!
How long did take to build the locomotive??
Standard EMD SD70Ace in cat paint job. My estimate is 2-4 million per locomotive.
Gevos aren't any Cheaper
When you really get down to it, you can open up a 1939 EMD FT and that SD70 and a lot of it is still very similair, particularly the prime mover.
I have been in the Mossville Illinois engine plant and you would not believe what they do to a defective engine block and send it out the door. Can you imagine having to have a head bolt pull out of a block and find a Heli coil had been installed and you just squeaked past your warranty?????? Its true. Now you own a boat anchor. I've Personally witnessed these repairs and was shocked that this took place in the plant.
thats so cool cattipillar has a deisel locomotive engine now awesome
awesome locomotive
No1 locomotive 🚂
EXCELLENT LOCOMOTIVES!!! This is definitely my major choice of models for my huge ho scale layout, WITH A 6 AXEL POWERED POSITIVE DRIVE SETUP, NO SLIPPAGE, THEY RUN QUIETLY, EFFECIENTLY SMOOTH AND POWERFUL, JUS ONE CAN PULL UP TO 40 CARS, BUT I USE AN EXTRA LOCO AS A HELPER OR A DPU, FASCINATING JUS FASCINATING. 💪💪😁😉👌👍 MORE PLEASE😁😊💪
Beautiful locomotive.
Looks beautiful
Great video, beautiful locomotive!
shout out to london ontario, didn't event know there was a CAT factory here
That plant closed in 2013. Muncie, Indiana now.
Thank U EMD.
So it's just an ordinary SD70ACe with a Caterpillar paint job. How is that news?
Come on Cat you guys gotta get EMD back in this race because GE are killing you guys. GE has a new tier 4 Gevo on the rails. Don't get me wrong I like both GE and EMD but if EMD doesn't get its act together Gevo's could rule the world.
+Terrell Howard Most likely, GE sells it's locomotives cheaper. GE is junk.
Yeah they do break down more than EMD
+billyboi57 You dont know what your talking about. If GE was cheaper and was junk, why do they enjoy such a large market share?
+Terrell Howard Beg to differ here. If you don't know the data how can you say GE locos break more than EMD's?
Really? You don't get it, do you? If someone makes a product cheaper then it's going to get the largest share of the market. GE locomotives are JUNK. Just how do you think they get the nickname of "toasters"? because more of them catch fire than EMD locomotives do.
that is completely bad ass...
the EMD configuration is looking more and more like the GE
The new EMD SD70ACe-T4 looks a bit like GE.
EMD used to be boxier and GE use to be more rounded, SD40-2 vs C36-7. GE got boxier and EMD got rounder for a bit with stuff like the SD70M, now they're both getting boxier.
Douglas Frazier EMD was the first come out with this design
I’m so excited to catch it if I can🛎
I wish Billy Mays was still pitching stuff...It rips, runs, rolls, just as a loco's motives should! Get these now while supplies last! If you order now we'll toss in another FREE!!! Just pay delivery and handling...Call now!!!
I like it.Thumbs up !
Very nice!!
Built in London, Ontario. Does that mean that Cat have taken over from GM EMD? Would any future GM EMD JT42CWR locomotives, known here in the UK as Class 66 (backbone of the modern British rail freight industry), be built by Cat?
Amen and Good Luck!
2:13
Transmission system? Are you sure? Think he meant traction system
that looks really cool.
This unit was built in Muncie, Indiana.
So with all those sticks on the left side of the Engineer, do you have to sit sideways to drive those things?
"formidable38" is correct. It is still EMD Power.
This is NOT a "Caterpillar" unit per-say. In fact it doesn't say "Cat" or "Caterpillar" or even "Powered by Caterpillar" anywhere on this unit. The only thing remotely CAT on this is the Yellow paint. EMD is owned by Progress Rail which is owned by Caterpillar. All this unit is, is another EMD demonstrator for a new SD70ACe. All Caterpillar (the parent company) used it for was to haul new CAT equipment for a publicity stunt.
Noting like the good oh sd70ace unit this locomotive is good for hauling and its k5lla horn it's cool as well
Keeping muscle trains alive!
Great more caterpillar equipment not built in America ! Just what we need
Awesome!
first time I've seen a loco that close to those kinds of trucks
What a great color scheme.
I'd love to meet this baby in person...she's gorgeous and well-built! If she ever happens to show up in Atlanta, GA, I want to meet her up close and personal. Given my 4'11.5" frame, I'd be like an ant in comparison, but that's okay. My boyfriend and I had the opportunity to see Big Boy a few years ago when she was in New Orleans and we were quite impressed. Knowing the likes of comic hero Superman, whose claim is to be 'more powerful than a locomotive', I'm sure he'd have no trouble at all pulling this behemoth with his teeth...LOL
If you can't beat the competition buy the company and then claim its all about YOU!
+floydflys72f Just like they did Bucyrus and O&K!
god that is so typical !!!!!!!!!! let's hope CAT becomes something for the sake of goodness in the world. i really don't care WHO they say they are if they will only do that !
I was thinking about saying that exact same thing......I had an EMD engineer some years back, just as the sale was being worked out, say to me that he thinks the sale was bcuz Cat prolly coudnt figure out why EMD turbo's where so much more efficient that Cats.....so Cat just bought emd....just to get the intellectual property.
@@mikespillman3075 wouldn't it be easier to just buy one engine and reverse engineer it if that's all your after? No reson to buy the whole company if you only want to see how their turbo works.
Nice job cat very nice design and function this is the hallmark of all locomotive production .I'm sure railroad companies will beat a path to your door
metra would like the low emissions factor of these locomotives
Caterpillar didn't design them. They bought the company that builds them.
oh really didn't know that oh well
Good overview, but certainly not a Cat locomotive!
is since CAT bought EMD.
Yeah, it's "Caterpillar" by ownership, but still completely EMD by technology. Although, I imagine it won't be much longer before sCaterplunder starts monkeying around, changing things. Whether or not changes will be for the better remains to be seen, heard, and smelled trackside :)
You mean that is an original EMD SD70ACe, the same with those in UP, BNSF, NS, etc. It's just owned by CAT and with CAT paint job?
Tom Smith Yep
if it uses a caterpillar manufactured engine at least, I'd consider it Caterpillar
So the bottom line is that this on is 1.37433 X the price of GE with the some spec. TH
Yep and GE have a whole host of new T4s and EMD(cat) have 1 that class 1 RR bought.
500 miles / 1 gal of diesel. Excellent
bring a couple of demo locos to Australia please. Caterpillar took over aurizion rail in Australia known as progress rail
That's an awesome looking locomotive!!!
Camioane asa mari se fabrica si in ROMANIA inainte de 1989 dar acum privim la altii ,in privinta Locomotivelor jos palaria cum spune ti voi its cool
Why in portuguese?at 2:37
amazing
He is talking like cat has always owned the sd70ace with emd. phsss ya right typical salespeople.
Cat is a piece of shit they stole EMD and screwed many good people just because of their greed and distrutive way how many others have been screwed over by cat i bet it is in the thousands
if it is EMD it will be EMD not CAT and the sd70's have been around sence the 70's
The SD70 (first gen) became a thing in 1993, not the 1970s.
+silicon212 who cares there ALL a pain in the dick to pull apart lol. Seriously though it'll be full of coal dust in five minutes, ever seen the clean air room in a coal hauling loco LOL black.
EMD was sold to Greenbriar prior to be being sold to CAT/Progress Rail
An EMD design with an EMD prime mover. So what's so Caterpillar about it? And why doesn't it have a Cat engine?
I THINK CATERPILLAR BOUT EMD BUT WITH AN AGREEMENT TO USE THE EMD NAME
RUBEN RIVERA Learn proper English and grammar and turn the cap locks off you fucking moron.
bearbon2 the Caterpillar part is the paint scheme. because CAT engines aren't as good as EMD. (Plus EMD is CAT)
bearbon2 it does have a Cat-built engine, but it's still just a 710. And caterpillar own progress rail, who owns EMD.
yea like cat diesels in trucks got poor mileage and had to stop making engines for trucks lol
Great livery.
We'll take them all. Ship the lot to Australia.
Does it come with an espresso maker?
what is under the big black box on the top?
thats the radiator
1:15 not just mining
I wish some of the thought reportedly put in to this locomotive would be punt in to today's cars and trucks. Make then easier to work on. That in turn should save us the owners of the cars and track money on regular maintenance and be safer during crashes.
like good information
Sd70's have been around sence the 80's the ACe's where first introduced in 2005 with the builders plate of EMD
No, the first sd70 came out in 1992. Not the eighties.
Hallo, da kommt man als Lokführer aus Deutschland nur ins staunen und würde sich gerne mal solche Loks anschauen können und eventuell auch mal ein Stück fahren dürfen! Was für Technik und welche Größe diese Lok haben! (german)
What make them choose 2 cycle over 4?
Well engineered, I like it!
Would be nice to see them make a locomotive in the 6000+HP class like the AC6000CW. With Caterpillar anything is possible.
Charles Damery
Actually Greenbriar Equity and Berkshire Partners bought EMD from GM.
Charles Damery
No government is competent enough to will outcomes in to being, no matter how much it tries to manipulate economics.
Omg efficiency figures he told.
It's more than most SUV's.
Here you can see one run
th-cam.com/video/z6WhVu-UIKA/w-d-xo.html
What it really needs is better soundproofing. The whistles on these motors are very hard on the eardrums, unlike GE units.
Why are they so good for mining? Are they not good enough for other freight options?
1:44 *Sees comparison of of human and SD70ACe height* O.O That is a tall locomotive.
Uziel Rodriguez In proper English please
Uziel Rodriguez oh ok.
Did he mentioned about turbocharger ? Becoz to run a diesel we need a turbo I pretty sure about that .......
Two strokes have a scavenger blower.
How is this VS the cummins train?
Are these the locomotives that were originally built by General Motors?
yes, they are EMDs which is a former GM division
HELLO MY NAMES IS RANDY AND I AM A BIG FAN A CATERPILLAR COOL THANKS FRIENDS RANDY
This how you know it's salesman knows what he's talking about
I would how much train cars can a single engine pull ?
Excellent products I have many Cat machines.
Anyway back to the SD90Mac-H plagued with chassis, engine and electrical problems. the chassis could not handle the *6000hp's torque, which is why the more common and successful SD90/43Mac happened *4400hp
There is a massive gap between the GP60 and SD90 in weight. UP still owned *6000hp units from both EMD and GE (GE's AC6000CW used for fast freight) but the power jains to *6000hp also came with a setup in fuel consumption.
OK thanks for the response.
All good
Cool
so its a run of the mill SD70ACE, but it has a caterpillar paintjob... yay
that's right the biggest joke out there no matter who owns it there is no comparison between the SD70Ace and the CW4400AC anybody who has worked with them will tell you the GE will drag that EMD al over the place the SD's are the slowest loading in power and are a real joke in dynamic Csx has just about quit buying that crap and are mainly a GE railroad now
engineer 29 just curious, may sound like a stupid question. but do locomotives have a bathroom on board ? You seem to know more then the layman.
eric wsmith
They have terlets in the nose.
AC4400CW.... get it right. Yes because that's what the competition is... not the ES44DC, ES44AC, ET44AC or ET44AH.
eric wsmith they are in the nose
UP probably did quickly after this video was published.
the Unit you showed at 2:36 we an SD70ACS, not an ACe. the prototype ACe was made in 2004, the main production of the ACe was 2005. so you were off by a your.
Michael j maniscalco oh, thanks for pointing that out. my mistake, I misspelled one word, you misspelled many more. maybe you should keep your mouth shut.
Specifications???
