It’s gives me more too look at when I get my 1966 Oldsmobile tornado, it’s been sitting for the past 10 years in my landlords garage and it only has 98,000 original miles and there’s no rust and he’s giving it to me for an amazing price 4K he’s getting old and he doesn’t use it no more so I look forward to getting it

    Switch pitch torque converter on a Toronado? Never heard of that. Maybe an unused feature of the kick down switch. To bad the carb swap was not followed through on regarding the linkage..
    Could the bad rings be due to it sitting around unused for so long. 30000 miles in 55 years. Pinging definitely does not help the piston ring either. Worst thing for an engine is disuse and neglect.

    • @mikelezcurra810
      @mikelezcurra810 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@antiqueautomotiveservice I rewatched the video and you did mention the switch pitch - My bad. Those switches can be opened and the contacts can be cleaned/ relubed, which is likely all it needs. The S/P terminal gets power at idle (so that the car doesn't pull while at a stop) and at about 2/3 throttle. Kickdown terminal is energized at about 3/4 travel.
      If you do take it apart, be very careful, as there are some serrated parts that allow for adjustment and if they fall out of position it will take some trial and error to put them back in their proper position. Otherwise it is very easy.

    what was the issue with the rear brakes locking up? My '66 does the same thing. I'm going to give it a full brake job with new hardware and wheel cylinders, but just wondering if you found what the issue was.

    • @kayeninetwo3585
      @kayeninetwo3585 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kayden, do these '66-7 Toronados have disc brakes in the front and drums in the back? If so, I've heard that sometimes improperly adjusted proportioning valves found on disc/drum setups can cause rear brakes to lock up. If not, I have no idea what the issue is. I know nothing about Toronados. I do like them, however.

    • @kaydentrujillo5153
      @kaydentrujillo5153 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kayeninetwo3585 I actually found the issue. So my 66 was converted to discs from a 1969 donor car. The original drum setup just used a distribution block up front with a single master cylinder. The 1969 used a distirubtion block, a metering valve, and a balance valve, all three separate pieces (these would later be combined into one single part for the 71 and up model years, what most people refer to as a proportioning valve, actually a combination valve). The previous owner transferred the dual master cylinder, the distribution block, and the metering valve over to my car, but NOT the balance valve. It'd down close to the frame so it's easy to miss. But as a result, there was no pressure proportioning, so my rear brakes would lock up really easily. I installed a combination valve that was used on the 71 and up cars instead of sourcing a balance valve because that makes life ten times easier. I've been rebuilding the front end on the car so I haven't had a chance to drive it yet with the combination valve, but I'm sure it'll stop like normal now

    One of my favorite cars of all time. Muscle car power but near-luxury car refinement. Probably only the same vintage Riviera excels!
    Just the cranking you can tell it wasn't right - when cranking without spark the sound should not be cyclical, like it is here. Quick/easy tip on buying classic cars without having to bother with a compression test. Another is simply pulling the PCV valve - obviously lots of blow by here. Also, dump that AFB! The Q-jet is a bit of a pain, but tuned and maintained right, it's the best carb for a stock GM big block.
