Orcas Playing & Juggling with Green Sea Turtle in Galapagos Islands

- Lead guide aboard M/V Evolution, Rafael Pesantes, spotted the Orca pod going after the sea turtle on May 29, 2016 in the Galapagos and quickly set off with the passengers to follow the developing scene.
It’s extremely rare to see an Orca tossing a sea turtle in the air. This video was taken by Phil Courter in the Bolivar Channel in the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Fernandina Island. You can see La Cumbre volcano in the background on Fernandina. Though transient Orca pods are not uncommon in the Galapagos, they are only seen very infrequently by visitors. Transients are opportunistic predators and feed on species including sea lions, dolphins, fish and in this case, green sea turtles.

Today, I learned that orcas are more skilled football players than I am.

They do it on purpose - to stun the animal and be able to eat some of it despite the shell. Sometimes they can even smash the shell.

@As Karo It is not even known if the Turtle is alive, or not. Turtles are not Orcas preferred diet, but the youngs would move it around, than allow it to go away, and live. Why you not have anything to say about gray seals killing a porpoise(dwarf dolphin), and leave it dead, not eating it?

I can agree. It is nature and it’s something to observe and respect and love but to find entertainment in the suffering of another animal is a little much. You can even be in awe. That sea turtle is not laughing though. Respect that as well.

I wish I could explain to the orcas that it's really douchey of them to be picking on endangered species like that, and how they should just stick to batting seals around.

They're not really 'juggling' are they? You wouldn't call yourself a juggler if all you can do is throw something in the air and let it drop.
They have no hands... but they catch it again in the water and sometimes they throw the turtle or seal into the air many times in turn.
