    For Second Renaissance it's worth noting that some of the most chilling images are actually recreations of actual photos (see Time/Life archives, etc) from WWII, Vietnam, Tienanmen Square, etc.

    "The Second Renaissance" is actually a condensed version of the film the Wachowskis wanted to do after the first Matrix. They wanted that and just a single sequel that resolved the plot-lines of both, but the studio felt audiences would be confused if the prequel didn't have Neo and co. in it and told the Wachowskis to ditch the Second Renaissance and stretch the sequel into two films instead. Thus Reloaded and Revolutions.

      Christ the easy fix would've just been to have Neo, Trinity and Morpheus be narrating over the events if the producers were so worried about that. First Renaissance is one of the most astonishing/disturbing shorts I've ever seen. A well-executed full-length film fleshing out the idea would've been remarkable.
      How things could've been I suppose.

    • @Painocus
      @Painocus 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Kei Kurono: I didn't (yet, might look some more) find the interview I talked about, but I did find one with Fishburne that in passing mentions them originally considering one prequel and one sequel ("One Cool Cat" by Thomas Carney, you can find it on Laurence Fishburne's old official site, now mirrored on a website called NarrowDesign) and one with producer Joel Silver that talks a bit about the prequel (reprinted in the article "Matrix Goes Anime" by Paul Martin on matrixfan net). That last one is interesting in that it mentions them considered making it a feature-length animated film at one point after they ditched it being the "proper" second Matrix film, but before Animatrix became a thing.

    ''Beyond'' is a favorite of mine. Not only is it beautifully animated (in a way that caters to the theme of kids' imagination) but there is a lot more going on in it than is mentioned here (but to be fair, you can't hit every base in a short discussion about multiple shorts). The themes of humans' needs for magic and mystery, and the matrix's agenda to destroy anything that invites imagination and creativity is subtle, and the sense of loss at the end when the main character (and the other kids) tries to go back but the glitch zone has been ''corrected'', is palpable and is subconsciously very resonant.

    Your least favourite, World Record, was my favourite. Every objection you had I have an opposite take on it. World record also had the most impact on me because I love the philosophy it went for and because Im also an athlete.
    World record starts out with showing you a guy who achieved a lot but was later brought to his knees in a drug scandal. Because of his desires to succeed, he wanted to prove to everyone that he had everything in him to do what he once did but greater. And that became the theme of the short, desire and determination for success until the transition into the desire for freedom.
    We start off seeing him being comforted by his father, letting him know that he has the potential if he just believed. The whole concept of belief and relying on belief was pushed by the constant references to Christianity using the cross Jesus died on. A lot of shapes in the world were of crosses. His car keys, his pendants, his father's jewelry, the walls in the last scene. Belief was the main theme in the original Matrix film as well. The idea of belief became the corner stone of Dan's actions.
    We started to make the transition into the desire for freedom when we were shown the interview with the reporter. Dan was quoted saying, "You're released from the world, you're totally free", whilst the shot was taken from the perspective of the elevator door opening..essentially being released..free. Tho we started the transition there, and as a foreshadow of things to come, the main theme was still on desire and determination. And we are thrown back to it with the sequence of him vs the agents.
    That scene was, if not, the most critical, when compared to the reporter scene. We see Dan being brought to his limit. Literally nothing was left in him as his tore himself apart. But his desire for success was stronger than everything else. The short started out with a narrative saying, "Only the most exceptional people become aware of the matrix. Those who learn it exist must possess a rare degree on intuition, sensitivity, and a questioning nature. However, very rarely, some gain this wisdom through wholly different means". And this agent scene became the proof of that as we see Dan stand up against everything and pushed himself beyond limitation, not before effectively believing that he had it in him, effectively driving himself out of the dream world.
    That action sequence stood out a great deal for me. We see the will in Dan's eyes when the Agents stopped time and everything. Like a short burst of electricity Dan's desires ripped him through every force that was holding him. The change in the music theme at that point was well done too. It drove home the feeling of moving beyond. It effectively placed you into Dan's shoes and it felt like you were the one breaking free.
    Once Dan experienced this freedom, he's now in state of desiring something new. It's like he said in the reporter scene, "It's like nothing I've ever felt before, it's everything I've worked for. And now I'm just hoping to get back there again." And we see this when he began to raise himself out of the chair, reaching for freedom.
    The idea of World Record is belief and freedom, the theme of the original Matrix. And I suppose one of two shorts that focused on desire as well. This is driven home by the last scene with the two walnuts. Each representing Dan's two lives of being trapped in something ready to be broken free.

The art style/animation are great, and highly stylized; Yoshiaki Kawajiri's work always is (I love his work on other animes like Reign the Conqueror). Although not as lengthy as the the other shorts, the story is concise but effective.

    I feel very passionate about this. Especially the Renaissance which was scary but raw and emotional with all its symbolism made me really think about the relationship between man and machine, even more than The Matrix itself. And Beyond with its dreamlike visuals and that I could relate to the girl was magical for me. Also amazing score, Juno Reactor especially. I like how the animation styles are insanely different but great in their own way as well. *This movie for a visual person is heaven.*

      I feel exactly the same way! I love that specific scene (and the music within it) so much. I actually had a screenshot from that scene as my wallpaper on my pc many years back. It's just so beautiful! There are many moments in Beyond that are really special: the part where the boys are jumping from a window sill and try to get as close to the ground as possible without hitting it, the dove scene--as you mentioned, and the final scene where the girl goes back to the haunted house location that's been turned into a parking lot and she drops a tin can on the lot and when the can cuts her finger she drops her blood onto the parking lot. It is all so magical and emotional.

    It felt like such a special object. Almost magical. Really captured that element of the matrix well. You should've talked about the soundtrack imo Chris! I still listen to it regularly to this day. For one, "Who Am I" captures the essence of matrix angst to an almost frightening degree. It brings that certain anxiety down to a real world feeling we all can experience. Am I at home here? Is this real? What is real? Who.. am I? Ugh. Amazing.

I guess we haven't been watching the same shorts then...I'm not saying all of them are pure gold...but the emotions these shorts are trying to get across, uneasiness, anxiety, injustice, disappointment, the nagging feeling that there should be more to the world and something is missing, are too subtle for some I guess...These stories haunted me when I first saw them and some carry a whole lot of meaning and depth underneath their cool looking presentation. Alas, taste vary and this is the guy that gave an A+ to a body switch anime...*sigh*

      That seems like a nice idea. It would be really cool if they did a compilation of short films like the Animatrix for Star Wars. I feel like it will give the creators more freedom and room to experiment, exploring small aspects of the SW universe or covering stories from the books, that don't really "fit" in a full feature film (because of the story itself, budget, Disney's target audience or whatever reason). And yes probably Rogue One could have been included on that.
      But yeah... I guess the problem is that it wouldn't make that much money :/

    • @irishman6414
      @irishman6414 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Producciones HC Yeah, obviously, it all comes down to money. Rogue One made a billion dollars regardless of how underwhelming it was, so I guess there's no reason to expect they won't continue doing it unless they stop being successful. But it's still a shame.

      The biggest issue I have with Rogue One is the lackluster characters. Maybe I'm so older, and would have hoped they had the courage to make some characters we would fell sad about in the end. The robot was the only character I felt sad about. The rest just... meh. To bad really and Rogue One was a nicely made movie from a technical point of view.

I Iove a rough style and it's how I tend to draw and color because I always find that super clean lines just makes the person seem too perfect and more two dimensional than life like. There is a little something relating to the first Matrix film behind "Program". It subtlely deals with the idea of "Ignorance is Bliss", which is what Cypher says to Agent Smith during his meeting with him to betray Morpheus. The character of "Duo" wants to return to the Matrix and tries to convince the character Cis to go with him. Cis refuses, and during their confrontation Duo reveals that he might have done something to betray their crew to the machines; which is exactly what Cypher did.

    IMO i'm sick of the 'Nothing ever happens' or 'No conclusion' arguments regarding these shorts, when I was 21 this came out and I liked it better than any of the Matrix movies depending on what i was in the mood for. Sometimes it's simply cool to just kick back, pack a bowl or grab a beer, whiskey, etc etc and enjoy the various styles of animations along with the soundtrack. i'm almost 40 now and I can do the same exact thing with no complaints. love this production, it's so epic to me.

    World record is the only short I remembered because it spoke to the humans who want to break their earthly bounds through sheer will

    Animatrix was very enjoyable and I don't think shorts were really a thing back then. There are tons of great shorts these days and it would be interesting to see Animatrix 2.

    I am convinced that the Second Renaissance short films were the inspiration for the backstory of the Geth in Mass Effect.

    Don't forget that Animatrix came out in dribs and drabs, with the final elements coming out in 2003, while we were waiting for Matrix Reloaded. Some were released from the movie website and I think one or two as other movie intros. So we were learning more about the Matrix world in pieces that later came out as the Animatrix. When experienced that way, each one was an illuminating peek into this intriguing world called the Matrix.

    I remember when my dad got a new DvD player and surround sound system. The Animatrix came with it and my dad never sheltered me. I was probably 5 or 6 when I watched this with him. My god, this movie(s) means so much to me, thank you so much for this review, Chris.

    I appreciated that World Record was about willpower overcoming control. The runner pushed himself through sheer will and, in doing so, broke the system’s protocol that would have “programmed” his physical constraints.

    On Matriculated... the 'liberated' robot at the end was trying to free other robots. it had just been freed and discovered its soul.... only to lose the only form of love it's ever known (the humans)
    its so sad.
