Just a correction for anyone who will watch this video later on: when I mentioned the “hypocrites”, I meant to refer to the “seers and sorcerers”. Dante would have slapped my wrist!

very late but in high school I studied all of Dante. i graduated high school in 2015 and studied all of hell in 8th grade, all of purgatory in 9th grade, and all of heaven my last year. Things have probably changed but today all Italian boys and girls spend the last three out of 5 years of high school studying the divine comedy. Some classes of course can not study all the canti depends on the skill of the teacher.
For information, there are many types of high schools in Italy. Mine was scientific high school. In the first year, sections of the Iliad, Odyssey and Aeneid are studied and read, while in the second year, all of Alessandro Manzoni's Promessi Sposi are read. These are dedicated hours, the rest is for literature.

Thank you! This was so insightful.
I haven't read Dante's Inferno or The Divine Comedy, though I've wanted to for many years. I read and speak both English and Spanish, and am trying to decide in which language to read these first. I assume that since Spanish is closer to Italian than English, that the translation will be "better" or closer to the original, but I know translation is more complex than that.
If by any chance anybody in the comments has read Dante in these two languages, I'd appreciate it if you shared your experience and which Spanish translation you recommend!

Thanks for your comment Jessica! I haven’t read any Spanish translation, but I know that the one by Bartolomè Mitre is highly praised.

I hate I missed this live, but better late than never. This was just awesome and has me stoked to pick back up with Purgatorio. Just as soon as I finish the Dead Souls read-along with the Codex Cantina I'll get right back on it.

I'm way behind on Purgatorio myself--I need to catch up soon! I wish I was joining in on the Dead Souls readalong because it sounds like a good one to read with a group!
