You did a very good job touching on the most important bits of hussie's history. You left out a lot of the unnecessary fat I would have had a hard time cutting (like Hussie's comic where he's riding on the back of Shaq's shoulders.) I knew about the barty series and S_O but there was a good chunk of early info I didnt know about like the original forums. The pacing was solid. In my series I struggled to keep thing moving while giving enough info and you nailed it here. I didn't even notice the video was half an hour until the very end. I'll be looking forward to the next part.
Man, I know that this is just the beginning, but I know that the series will make me both nostalgic and sad at the same time, nostalgic remembering how awesome HS is, and sad due to how much Hussie and the franchise has fallen.
That's why I felt the need to show all these old works first. Hussie's reuse of old ideas and references to his old works are a huge aspect of Homestuck that I feel is greatly overlooked.
Holy shit, I need a cite on that quote about Problem Sleuth's ending. If you had that line in a movie as foreshadowing I'd go "Okay, that's too hamfisted, no one would say it and then do that."
I'm mostly just happy to hear some Problem Sleuth appreciation tbh, it deserves it ;w; That being said, the whole video was really interesting and well-paced, I've learned a lot of new stuff about the pre-Jailbreak era of Hussie! I'm hooked, can't wait to see the rest of the series :DD
LETS FUCKING GO! I binged all your old homestuck videos years ago and have always wanted to hear more. I had never even heard of homestuck before your channel lol
I also found this comic at age of 15 But at the time everyone in the fandom was fucking dead, besides that one guy who animates animation memes about cronus and other trolls every week
14:20 If you go back and read another post hussie made that's available in the unofficial homestuck collection titled "the man-on-man suckoff challenge", he makes it very clear there that he had a particular interest and fascination with poorly done art. This leads me to believe that homestuck and the other mspaint adventures were pretty much the artstyle they were on purpose as a sort of extension of the early internet shitposting style humor he had at the time.
It’s really cool to see someone talking about hussie’s pre-homestuck work, but I wish you would have talked about Wizardy Herbert a bit more, because it has some interesting parallels to homestuck
I need to search more, but this seems like this is the video essay with much of anything to say about Problem Sleuth. I'm reading it for the first time now, so I'll have to come back to finish this video when I finish reading it. These two stories really make my brain tingle, and I feel like I didn't hear enough about Problem Sleuth.
Well, I just finished it. From start to finish in just around 9 hours, only skipping the recaps and the treaty text. I just cant help but be incredibly fascinated by the format that Hussie had practically perfected in preparation for Homestuck.
Hussie's previous works, ESPECIALLY Problem Sleuth, are instrumental to Homestuck's foundation. I think most other videos are just interested in talking about Homestuck the Internet phenomenon, rather than actually looking into Hussie's growth as an artist and the effect it had on Homestuck as a story. The amount of references and ideas that he mines from his old works are a huge part of Homestuck's DNA.
Bruh Jailbreak is great, it's literally just the exact same sense of humor the other adventures use, just a bunch of stupid silly gags. Also the Problem Sleuth title screen was made by a fan, and was created AFTER Problem Sleuth ended.
Acctually according to hussie the people typing the joke names may have been the trolls and the coding guide for assholes may have been by Karkat? I think that last one was more of a like, he totally would have done it but the trolls were in fact present in act 1
I have to explain things in a way a first time reader would see things. Mentioning the trolls during Act 1 doesn't make a lot of sense. Also, Buckminster Funnyuncle isn't Karkat. He just talks similarly.
Check out part 2!

Problem Sleuth rules. Good vid
I forgot how much better the payoffs in Problem Sleuth were. Im tempted to re-read the books

Hussie is.. a lot weirder than i thought..
"Tying up the loose ends makes all the difference. It's a model I will strive to repeat."
The monkey's paw curls.

I disagree :)
Its just good all the way✌🏻
@@louzo5175 Nope, ACT 6 sucks.
@@sussy3778 act 6 is okay, not my favorite though
this video deserves more views man. I started reading homestuck in 2011 and didn't know about Hussie's past comics that much
youre telling me homestuck was preceded by workstuck?????
Good stuff! Kind of feel like a secondary not knowing that a lot of recurring elements from Homestuck come from such old projects.

I might have just ruined your life.
my favorite part of this homestuck review is when you talked about homestuck
finally a video all about how great problem sleuth is. fantastic. oh hey, and some stuff before that.

Incredible work Cad! 😄 Awesome seeing the stuff that came before it.
I didn't think you'd know anything about Homestuck... But thanks!
@@CadBrad I didn't realize other people did either 🤣
I am sooo hyped for the rest omg
I can honestly believe jailbreak was "made by fans"
Cool video, bro.
jack quest was fire
Where did you get "Fatal Revenge 2" from? That's a pretty rare sight.
I'm one of the few people that listened to Byron Hussie's podcasts. He talked about it and uploaded it. It's on his channel called Cinema Dare.
wait... june 12th? you're telling me bard quest shares a birthday with karkat?
Exactly!
You cool, man, make more content! Good luck!
I assume part 2 is gonna be etheir Act 1 and 2 or Act 1 - 3
