- YAGP Alumna and Dutch National Ballet Soloist Michaela De Prince performing a Contemporary Variation at YAGP International Ballet Competition NY Finals 2010. She was 14 at the time and a student of The Rock School for Dance Education. Her performance scored her a scholarship to the JKO School of American Ballet Theater. She was coached by Bo & Stephanie Spassoff.

YES! I'm 62 and in all my dancing years I never saw that IN BALLET (just to clarify). We did it in jazz all the time. We do it in hip-hop Now, even some contemporary... but ballet? Too strict. That was the Coolest thing! (True that we as students in would get together and do Forbidden things en pointe to rock and R & B. However, attempting something like that in class or for a competition? Umm, no!)
Michaela is just a BORN DANCER!! Period.
Her strength, balance, grace is just beyond her years. I hope she goes far.
Every time she expands her leg and arms it's like a butterfly opening up. She is so strong which is why I guess she can do everything so effortlessly. She's such an inspiration to the world - an embassador without knowing it, mainly because of her background - where she came from yet as much as it must have made her feel sad, inferior at times, awful how people can be so cruel she still had the strength of character to fly. The magazine she picked up when she was a little child and hid in her knickers because of fear it would be taken away, well she saw a ballerina which became her dream and when she was adopted by her gorgeous parents who saw her flaws and just knew she needed love - they gave her the opportunity and she certainly ran with it. I'm already welling up with tears as I write this because if you don't know her story you need to read it. Kudos to her parents that adopted her. Who cannot but love this woman. To have risen against all that adversity she experienced as a child, she has to be absolutely beautiful inside which shows on her face. Now, if she wants, for one day nothing short of a true prince to come and love her for everything that she is. Someone like her must, just must have children to bestow on the world her gorgeousness through her children and in turn they through theirs and the world, just a little bit more becomes a much nicer place.

I think we expect great things from this girl if she is dancing like this at fourteen. We don't see a lot of greats come out of America (or rather American training) But she's going places, and I can't wait to watch her leading roles!

Camille G Yeah, I thought the same thing. I know nothing about choreography, but the whole thing just felt kind of monotonous and disjointed. The music was kinda lackluster too.
Her leg holds are amazing! She has so much strength, flexibility, control and elegance. She would dance Kitri Act 3 amazingly

This is really beautiful, Michaela looks so soft and natural, like she's improvising every step she takes. I've taken ballet lessons for 7 years and I really hope to be like her when I am older

Beautiful lines and technique! I felt like it was a little step-after-step, lacking some transition and emotion but I am certainly not judging because she is a gorgeous dancer and all of that will come with time.

Okay so that's not the reason at all and that is stupid.
Ballet doesn't keep anyone out. This artform is European. It originated in Italy during the Renaissance. Ballet was never a thing in black culture in Africa or among blacks in the West. It STILL isn't really a thing in black culture anywhere. There are quite a few black ballet dancers. There doesn't seem to be many of them because no one was really as obsessed with the skin color of the dancers as some people are about race now.
Who comprise the audiences that patronize the ballet? These patrons will stay away when the Cancel Culture mob starts calling them racists. Then the artform will die, and there will be no ballet performers of any race performing anywhere. Ballet is one of the few remaining artforms that hasn't yet been ruined by politics and the Cancel Culture mob. One day not long from now when all this racial propaganda is over and done with people will figure out that they've been had.
@@FallacyAsPraxis I'm not in favour of cancel culture because I dont think it brings about equality. I'm in favour of making the effort for equality. Ballet is a human art form. We are all humans, all dancers and all express our humanity in dance. Ballet is a dance artform based to a very large extent on folk dance and traditional street dance. If ballet stands still it will die. Black dancers and black danceforms should be part of it.
@@casteretpollux Black dancers have been a part of ballet for a very long time. I follow many of them on social media. The color of the dancers' skin is not important. Talent is what counts. Most black people aren't interested in ballet anyway because it is not a part of black culture. I wish we could get past political correctness. It is ridiculous.

Для 14 летней американки неплохо, она ж не в вагановке училась. Тем более что в штатах не классический балет, а скорее балетоподобные танцы. Но у самой Микаэлы очень сложная и необычная судьба, но тяга к балету не исчезла несмотря на тяжелое раннее детство.
