    Wasn’t a cornea scan/topography able to tell how deep the scar is?

      That is a good question.
      The issue is not the depth, but whether scarring involves the deep layer, the Descemets membrane.
      Layered surgery separates the stroma from the Descemets membrane; only once doing so can you observe scarring within Descemets membrane.
      Even if scans could accurately identify scarring within Descemets membrane, it doesn’t change the plan: the aim of stromal transplantation is to leave behind Descemets membrane and the vital endothelial cells.
