My biggest gripe with the IBJJF is refs that cannot explain or justify why they make the calls they do, but will insist on a rule infraction, even though the rule book clearly disagrees with them. It's a minority of the calls, but I have seen it happen often enough that it's a problem. It's understandable because the rule book is 80+ pages long, with far too many stipulations for a normal human to be looking to out for on the fly under the stress of competition. But sometimes it seems like certain refs just want that long, long tournament to end more quickly and look for any reason to stop a match faster.
It’s that way for a reason. Watch how many athletes from smaller schools get DQ’ed vs. Atos, Aoj, etc..especially if you’re seeded on the lower end and about to cause an upset. The best shot you have against their corrupt system is to just compete no gi because it takes away many, not all, of their ability to say you committed an infraction.
So this isn't a gi check story, but at world master, everyone in our bracket had a dang black gi, including myself. I was told to put the gold and green belt on, so I removed my purple belt and put the distinguishing colored belt on. No problem. Well the table told me I had to wear both. I said no I don't. The ref then turned me back and made me put two belts on. I wasn't gonna argue with the ref. If I have to wear two belts, so should they. It's now an asymmetrical match. They have an extra grip and I have a bunch of cloth around my belly that nobody is used to having. Nobody trains with two belts. It makes no sense and I find it absolutely ridiculous.
I think it's normal that they make you wear an identifying belt (not just IBJJF) over your colored belt. Sometimes I wear the extra belt and other times my opponent wears, and I don't really notice it. At one tournament, when they gave Kron Gracie the belt, he threw it to the ground and the ref made his less well known opponent wear it.
@@willdallas53 yeah, in the end it didn’t make a difference, but I guess it just rattled me a little in the moment… I’m a creature of habit and it just surprised me
Hey Chewy, thanks for all your great videos. At 2023 world masters my sanabul gi pants didn't pass inspection because of the colored crotch area. I should have known, i guess. So I ended up sprinting across the convention center to find my teammate to borrow his pants. Sprinted back just in time. Passed inspection, took a couple deeeep breaths and got my mind right. This was the first competition that I had my mentality right, i had worked on it all year, so I got back in the zone and the running was a great warm up too! AND, BIG THANKS TO YOU, CHEWY, I finally had a takedown that worked for me, and I ended up winning double gold! I saw you at this years world masters and i wanted to thank you personally, but you were too popular, lol. Thanka a million!
Got dq’d this year at JJ con in Vegas. Blue piece of cloth in crotch.smh I had time to buy a new one but got on the mat with zero warmup. I’m a 64 year old white belt I wasn’t trying to get over on IBJJF
My very first competition was after training for maybe a month or a few weeks. I stepped out of the mat and I had no clue what I was doing, I was just wearing gym shorts and a t-shirt. The rest stopped me and told me I couldn't go out there cuz my shorts had pockets. So I had to run to the merch booth and buy a pair of shorts in less than 3 minutes and put them on. They let me compete, and I got my butt kicked
I've witnessed the IBJJF inconsistency first hand. At 2023 Masters Worlds, I was supporting a teammate and would watch his match and chat, get water, etc in the bullpen. During the bullpen times, we were often where they screened gis. There was distinct difference in application, depending on the screener. This was the bullpen for purple belts, so quite experienced folks. Interesting that more than one competitor had their first match with a specific gi, left the bullpen and then was told upon reentry their gi failed. When it was eventually my turn, I swear the screener just looked me over and gave me the ok. However, other teammates with the same gi were flagged for logo embroidery in the wrong location. One of the more interesting and funny stories was at a NAGA, where a teammate/buddy was just about to step on the mat for his no gi match. The ref said his shorts were not acceptable. It was surf style shorts and apparently the pocket was a no-go. He looks at me and them my shorts. He's like 6'-2" and 220 lbs and I'm 5'-8" and 165 lbs. . .uh, now way bro :D He ended up having to buy a pair from the NAGA table. Then later, I saw other competitors competing with surf shorts, or worse. I guess it was later in the day, so maybe because the stock was running low :P
@@willdallas53 I mean I get that. Was pointing out others in the same competition on the same day were allowed to. Not saying anything beyond noting the inconsistency of application.

My first IBJJF tournament was World Masters this year as a blue belt. I wore my Origin Pro Pants with traditional draw string (not the clip). I half expected it for some reason (I don't know why) so it didn't throw me odd mentally too bad. I won my first match 🤙🏻lost my second.
Had my ref stop my match one second into the match to have the Gi checker reinspect my Gi sleeves. Also had a white belt from my gym get DQ’d for that same Origin Gi clip.
My girlfriend was competing, her pants were just a centimeter too short for the guy, I tugged her pants just a little bit in front of him and he let us pass. what a joke
This is a common phenomenon known as "bike-shedding". The IBJJF gives the appearance they are progressing the sport through changes, but the changes they make are trivial for expanding the sport's presence.
I do think that ibjjf is probably one of the most well run tournaments but I agree that the uniform rules sometimes do get ridiculous. I have worn the same gi for every ibjjf competition since blue belt, I’m a purple now and I’ve had this gi checked at master worlds and it was fine but then at one of their opens the checker said the pants were too short. I do have long legs so maybe that’s it and I had the pants tied to my waist as usual but the inconsistency definitely messed things up. I also saw a woman in no gi wear the same shorts as me and was let through but then when they checked mines they said it was too short, so granted it might be bc my legs are long but still I didn’t think it was fair.
SO funny you say that about times of non-IBJJF tournaments -- I remember NAGA east coast championships -- was supposed to compete at 5pm -- didnt step on the mat until 11 pm. It was crazy.
2022 No Gi Worlds I had a purple Shoyoroll rashgaurd with yellow writing and a yellow stripe going down the side from my armpit to the waist and the checker said I couldn’t wear it because of the yellow is kids color. I’m competing in Master 2 Super Heavy purple. I don’t even think kids we’re competing at my time but I always do the 2 option rule so I was able to compete getting 3rd in my division and 2nd in the open
Surely this is down to you not understanding the stipulated colours and the rules rather than IBJJF incontistencies? The rules are clear "Both genders must wear a shirt of elastic material (skin tight) long enough to cover the torso all the way to the waistband of the shorts, colored black, white, or black and white, and with at least 10% of the rank color(belt) to which the athlete belongs. Shirts 100% the color of the athlete’s rank (belt) are also permitted"
@@garydavies7198 But that's a stupid rule. If it's not dangerous and it doesn't give you an advantage, who cares what you're wearing? At World Masters last year, I went through the gi check with full length spats under my gi. I won my first match, but the ref told me that I wasn’t allowed to have full length spats on. I didn’t have shorts, so I had to roll my spats above my knee for my second match. It constricted my movement and wasn’t something I was used to. Not saying that it was the reason for my loss in the second match, but the mental aspect definitely played a role. Ever since then, I’ve stopped wearing full length spats and only wear compression shorts underneath.

He misses weight by 1 pound because he went home and had too much to eat.
I always bring 3. My lucky gi, my backup and my backup backup. Went through with my lucky gi, won the first match then a ref from a different mat made me change before my second match just before it was about to start.

Its fair to blame the org because they should be held responsible for vetting and training their staff but the inconsistencies in the gi checking comes down to personnel. The gi checkers are usually local guys that do it infrequently, maybe just once a year when the ibjjf tournaments come through. I ref and the instruction i recieve is that I'm ultimately responsible for what happens on my mat. If the 17-year-old gi checker thats not paying attention let something weird through i'm supposed to stop it, even if I don't notice until the middle of the match. People are recording every match and when they lose some coaches will go to the head ref to complain about any little thing to try to get their guy back into the bracket. "The opponent was wearing an illegal pants clip and shouldn't have been allowed to compete and..."
It doesn't matter if Gi checkers are 17 years old, or doing it infrequently. If they are employed to do a job, they have to get it right. From your perspective there should be no need for a referee to do a gi checkers job. However, if you are told as a referee you are ultimately responsible for what happens on the mat but don't notice a rule infringement until half way through the match then you aren't doing your job correctly either. The competitors are paying on average $130/£100 per event. The IBJJF needs to get the training sorted, the rules clarified and ensure it's employees are consistent in application of those rules.
My biggest gripe with the IBJJF is refs that cannot explain or justify why they make the calls they do, but will insist on a rule infraction, even though the rule book clearly disagrees with them. It's a minority of the calls, but I have seen it happen often enough that it's a problem.

It doesn't matter if Gi checkers are 17 years old, or doing it infrequently. If they are employed to do a job, they have to get it right. From your perspective there should be no need for a referee to do a gi checkers job.
