    About this Bulgarian vlog
After arriving in Bulgaria, a number of people insisted that I travel to the former Bulgarian capital, Veliko Tarnovo. I journeyed out and was amazed at the history and culture stemming from this city. The birthplace of the second Bulgarian Empire did not disappoint!
In this episode, we get to see a lot of the Bulgarian attractions in this historical capital, including:
    - Tsarevets Fortress
    - Ascension Cathedral (Teofan Sokerov)
    - Baldwin’s Tower (Aleksandar Reshnov)
    - Yantra River
    - Tsar Boris III Bridge
    - Holy Forty Martyrs Church
    - Monument to the Assen Dynasty
    - Gurko Street
    - Samovodska Chercea Market
    - The House with the Monkey (Kolyo Ficheto)
I also got to get a taste of Bulgarian cuisine. The first restaurant that I tried was closed. I ended up stopping at Shtastlivetsa. I ordered a Shopska salad, which is Bulgaria’s national dish. I also got Svinsko, a pork chop fried in garlic. Both are highly recommended! I washed those delicious dishes of Bulgarian cuisine down with a local Bulgarian beer called Shumensko.
    About Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria:
Veliko Tarnovo, often referred to as the "City of the Tsars," is a town with a rich historical tapestry woven through the heart of Bulgaria. The city is notably perched on the Yantra River, cradled by three hills, each carrying the weight of its past. It served as the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, gaining prominence from the 12th to the 14th century, a period marked by flourishing culture and significant architectural achievements, including the construction of its imposing fortress, Tsarevets.
The fall of Veliko Tarnovo to the Ottomans in 1393 marked a prolonged period of decline, but the town's spirit endured. It played a pivotal role in the Bulgarian Revival period and the fight for national independence, culminating in the 1879 drafting of the first Bulgarian constitution after liberation.
Today, Veliko Tarnovo’s culture is a palimpsest of its storied history, with medieval traditions living on in its art, festivals, and the proud spirit of its people. The town, with its picturesque houses clinging to the hillsides and its historical monuments, continues to be a bastion of Bulgarian identity and a testament to its resilient past.
    About Tsarevets Fortress:
Tsarevets Fortress in Veliko Tarnovo stands as an emblem of Bulgaria's medieval might. This historic citadel, once the core of the Second Bulgarian Empire, resonates with tales of past glory and tumult. Built on the site of earlier settlements, the fortress reached its zenith between the 12th and 14th centuries, serving as the residence of Bulgarian tsars. Its imposing walls and towers, strategically perched on a hill overlooking the Yantra River, were both a defense and a statement of power. Today, Tsarevets is a revered cultural monument and a venue for the spectacular Sound and Light show, bringing history to vivid life for visitors from around the globe.

No videos can really show how stunning and picturesque the area is but you found a lot of the nice places in the city. I can't wait for the city and the government to invest a little bit in restoring the 3rd fortress of Veliko Tarnovo and reveal some of the true size of the complex.

I like how the standing architecture (buildings, bridges) etc is all less than 100 years old but theyre not gaudy like new architecture in other places and countries. Especially ascension cathedral, making that art contemporary to the date in which the building was built is much better than trying to copy something from centuries ago, especially if there isnt sufficient documentation about that artwork. Comparing this video with that other one in---what country was it---whatever place had all of those strange statues, you can see that trying to build a sense of an old culture or rooted civilization doesnt mean you have to overdo it and make it comical. I also like how you put on colors or scarves or hats or whatever for every country you go to to show your uspport for locals. Awesome

    • @TravelLordOnLoc
      @TravelLordOnLoc  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hahaha thanks! Yeah, compared to Skopje the architecture was much better. I thought the cathedral was really nice!

Tzar kaloyan was 6feet 7 inches high😀also his brothers asen and peter was two meters and all asen dynasty rulers were giants according to the standarts of the time, asen dynasty royal insignia was the snow leopard and it was on kaloyan sarcofagus,he called himself the roman slayer in answer of the byzantene emperor basil the second calling himself the bulgarslayer cause he blinded 15 000 bulgarian soldiers and left one in 100 with one eye to lead the way home.....kaloyan was known to fill ditches with byzantene soldiers for his siege machines to walk on ,during the siege of varna in early 1200's and it was easter....he was also famous with the defeat of the latin knights who was undefeated before and took the first latin emperor balduin prisoner, but balduin was ploting against kaloyan and was trying to take in his bed the bulgarian queen while she was studing french with him and kaloyan had some rage sindrom because of wound on the back of his had and during one of them he throwed balduin from his tower 😂😂😂for being don juan in his doorsteps😂😂.....and one last thing there is a rumor that kaloyan ordered his soldiers to rape captured knights via a small opening in their armor that was used for going to the toilet after wich they complain before the pope cause at that time we were in union with the western church
