Have 2 Maremma dogs who are brothers. I am on a farm and use the dogs who are now 25months old as guard dogs for smaller livestock as rabbits, chickens, pigeons, ducks, cats. Struggled with them initially as we're 7 months old when I got them as we're escaping over a 6 foot fence n not guarding the birds but we're more of a predator. After some training and having a fenced area of 3 acres are the best dog breed I've had.
I adopted a dog from southern Israel and an app revealed she might be mostly Maremma.. It could very well be that the cnaan sheep dog of Israel might have been taken to Italy ... I was told on an Israeli group it is highly unlikely my dog is a mostly pure bred Maremma but she looks so much like this breed
How do you get your maremma to become so social. Ours is so sweet but when people are around he's loud and scary looking. Just his size alone makes people terrified
@@louisecardinal she does bark a lot, but it's more of a demanding "come pet me" She was born that way. I wanted a guard dog, but got a friendly fuzz ball.
@@ab935 ours is two. If we're with him he's fine let's people pet him but if they stop and move away he'll lunge at them. He hasn't bitten anyone he's nipped someone but not sure if you he's trying to Hurd them or if he's being aggressive
@@louisecardinal they are not known for herding. Sounds like you got one with the built-in guarding ability. What I was looking for. Mine gets mouthy with me when I stop petting her, that and the paw. She jumps a lot when her favorite people come over, wish I could stop that behavior. 7.5 yo and still a puppy.
My maremma Sugar is 7 months old. My vets- yes, plural, are giving me different advice on when to have her fixed. She is 27” tall & over 100 pounds already. Her parents are both well over that and 150 to 160 pounds and no they are not overweight. They are just big dogs. I don’t want to short change her on her growth ( bone density & formation, etc) so I’m looking for advice from other maremma owners. She is a mixed breed with Great Pyrenees, but has more maremma per her dna report. When is a good time to get her fixed? I foolishly got the pet smart puppy plan that includes the spay, but then the same vet that sold me on it at the next visit encouraged me not to fix her until after her first year. The plan is one year lol. The next vet- at the same practice- encouraged me to fix her before one year. Suggestions?
Whew, that's a tricky situation with the conflicting advice! For giant breeds like Maremmas, waiting until they're fully grown (around 18-24 months) is often recommended to allow proper bone and joint development. But I get the dilemma with your plan. If you can, I'd suggest waiting at least until she's a year old. Maybe talk to the vet who recommended waiting and see if they can work with you on using that PetSmart plan later? Ultimately, it's your call based on Sugar's health and your situation. Just keep in mind that early spaying in giant breeds can sometimes affect their growth. Good luck with your big girl! - Nancy

Maremma are original from. Romania, Italians have just register he the breed first. i walked my dog off leash with no problem

My maremma is the friendliest dog on the block and is good at canicross. Loves stuffed toys however my other dog destroys them when she's not looking.
