ACE has given us both the OoT triforce and Mew under the truck. I can’t put into words how important ACE and tas authors are for given is things like this
Wish I'd found this sooner. I really enjoyed the RGME video when this first came out, but this is a completely different side of things. I love hearing about the issues that developers run into and why they choose to solve them (or not) the way they do.
19:34 - this is a really interesting topic to hear you guys talk about, because it's such a fine line that you had to toe between keeping the viewer immersed in the experience of the presentation and presenting things in as authentic a manner as possible. At the end of the day, though, I think your team did a genuinely masterful job of threading that particular needle, to the point where I was honestly brought to tears the first time I watched the original video. You guys tapped into something from my childhood, something that I hadn't even realized was still living inside me, in such a uniquely visceral fashion. Just such phenomenal work by everyone involved.
Thanks for saying that. It was very tricky. At a large scale, if we went too far in one direction, we'd have people thinking that it was just a romhack, or worse, that it was just a video and completely fake (some people actually thought this about the BotW / Twitch chat part). If we went too far in the other direction, people would think everything was hidden within the cartridge, as many people did for a lot of it. If we drily explained what was injected every step of the way, that would have taken away from the experience of the plot. And anywhere we did end up falling between these three options, we would have had some people get the wrong idea or not understand. You can't make something that is pushing the boundaries of an art form and also is universally appealing and easily understandable.
You can even have further explanation. Search for "Finally Obtaining the Triforce in Ocarina of Time: Triforce Percent Explained" from user Retro Game Mechanics Explained.
i always knew the time would come when loving gamers will rewrite and finish the memories we had from unfinished stuff devs could not fit in. i cant wait when someone will finish the original wow classic with all the assets left in the game code they left so much out im sure some day someone will do it. much love thanks for that inspiring stuff
I didn't realized when I watched the original that you were still inputting for a few minutes while you were still playing. This whole thing is badass guys!
The part with the running man race was when i realised that this was totally made up, it doesn't make sense that, when you time travel, if you travel back and forth the exact same amount of time (7 years) you go from the race timer being at 20 seconds or whatever to -5. I know that it was made to tie everything up and all, but it's clearly incorrect.
Absolutely fantastic. I wish I could be part of the project. I've been working on restoring Link's model from Zelda 64 beta 96. Haven't fully finished it, trying real hard to fully capture Link
The "fanfic" aspect which was absolutely a dream come true for me was getting to arrange the music for the """""true ending""""" of OoT. Writing the plot and screen text were fun, but other folks on the team did a lot of work on them, in particular Rebecca Tripp for the plot and Kim-SukLey for the screen text.
It's nice that credits were given to the original author of the fake screenshots. This type of hoax is very difficult to have nowadays. I wonder if the author is still out there, has seen this video, and if they cracked a smile when they saw the overture of sages.
This is amazing. Thank you for such a thorough break down. It really helps to know how much was created for this project and all the people who worked hard for this to happen. Great work, everyone!
Is there a video with more in-depth details on how the "future" was made? This is not only impressive, this looks miles ahead anything N64 has made I would guess that the framerate is quite low and there is nothing else there to render, but still fascinating
There isn't really an in-depth video on the cel shading, though I might make one eventually as I've been working on other microcode mods. The framerate stays at 20 fps most of the time but drops to 15 fps twice when Link, Zelda, and the island are all on screen. As you said, we picked the camera angles and the cutscene layout carefully so that most of the time there would be very little on screen most of the time.
I just HAD to learn more about how this was developed after watching the runthrough on the GDQ channel. As someone who knew nothing about Arbitrary Code Execution prior to this video, I think you guys did a decent job explaining it's purpose and how it differentiates from straight up modding or hacking the game itself. There's still a few things that confuse me, but I've been told that more explanation videos are on the way, so I will wait patiently and eagerly for those. Everyone on this team deserves to give themselves a pat on the back; this was absolutely wicked~
After explaining the setup, I cannot believe the skill needed to start ACE live. holy crap. Im going back to the live performance after all the behind the scenes
I should mention that the OoT Pc port, Ship of Harkinian, has a Triforce% mode that gets activated once you enter a screen transition. So if you go through the hassle of getting the right version of the Pal Master Quest Debug rom, it’s very much worth it.
And I can report that Ship has updated since then to have more options. I believe NTSC Master Quest is available now? And I know that one is a lot more available and in circulation
Thanks! Though Ariana probably didn't come up with it by mashing buttons. The song was shown in her text emails as well as a not-very-well-done photoshopped image from her. Who knows how she came up with it. The irony is that all the music we arranged and injected actually was inserted into the game by TASBot mashing buttons.
