The last scene where the stretcher rolls down the pier was filmed at Paradise Cove in Malibu. As a kid I was there watching the filming. Took hours just to set up that 15 second scene. The stunt man had to do it over 10 times.
I've driven old ambulances and hearses like these 61 Pontiacs, those things are very hard to manuever the way they are driving them here. They are super heavy cars that wallow on the road. I'm impressed with the stunt driving here.
The grocery store was on Ventura Blvd in Studio City, it was a beautiful Market Basket and that area is so ugly and overdeveloped now it is unrecognizable.
I love Jerry Lewis as I can definitely relate to comedy. Mr. Tuffinton on that ambulance stretcher had me rolling in laughter like crazy! This and don't give up the ship are two great ones among all of his shows. Theydont make shows like this anymore.ialso loved the show it's a mad,mad,world. Comedy on steroids! Rip Jerry you are great!

These stunts were amazing, NO COMPUTERS in those days, these were all actual stunts. Real talent. Yes this whole scene was filmed at the top of Laurel Canyon, those houses were all fairly new. The Studio City store is all gone. Some ugly mini mall now.
I watched them film the gurney scenes in the Laurelwood tract in Studio City. The stunt man had steering controls by his side so he could "drive" the gurney. He did have one pretty good wipe out where the gurney turned-over in a turn.
I laughed like crazy when I saw this movie in a movie theater in Jackson Heights, Queens, NYC as a boy with my late father in 1964. For me this was and is the funniest ending to a movie comedy I ever saw. When comedy was for everyone and not for late teens and adults. Those came later in the 1970s and 1980s. 😊
so for fun i finally drove down laurel pass ave recently---it's amusing to watch this clip after seeing the actual location firsthand(you can spot the name on the streetsign when she gets off the bus)-
RIP, Mr Everett Sloane. Though I didn't like this movie very much, I'll always remember you here and in your timeless performance as Mr Berstein in Citizen Kane.
Besides the fact this is a funny movie I was just appreciating the stunt work such as the car wranglers driving that ambulance around cars at high speed. I never saw this Jerry Lewis movie before. Brilliant slapstick comedy it reminds me of the movies Buster Keaton made when he did his own stunts. I wonder if Hi-C fruit punch paid for product placement in this movie. :-)
