It is often understated how significant the Ottoman victory over Russia at Azov was. Had they starved him out and had the Tsar imprisoned, Peter the great would not have ascended the throne for a while, which would have allowed other European powers to make preparations against Russia. And when Alexei fled Russia, Peter saw this as a betrayal and saw him as an existential threat. But still, given how brutal Alexei's death was, he must have personally hated him. 10:15, imagine if the Ottomans hadn't allowed Peter and his army to escape, leading to him either being killed or captured. Without Peter the Great, the modernisation of Russia likely would been reversed or greatly delayed, as there were many Russian nobles opposed to his reforms as well as his son Alexei. If he had been taken prisoner and taken to Constantinople, his rivals may well have deposed him and placed the traditionalist Alexei as Tsar. Losing an entire army would have been a devastating blow as well, leaving the country vulnurable to invasion. Without a strong, modernized Russia, world history would have been very different. Indeed it seems to Ottomans missed their chance to decapitate their greatest rival.

I mean they speak a turkic language, sure, but it's not like the people who brought the language with them into Anatolia displaced those who were there before and mantained the steppes culture. Turkey is deeply mediterranan, as much as Greece or Spain are, they're not only sedentary people, but people who build a lot of monuments and other such things that go beyond just sedentary lifestyle. Ancestry-wise, turks are an amalgam of everyone who ever lived in Anatolia,such as greeks, phoenicians, romans, arabs, gauls, mongols, persians, swedes/russian/english (varangians), to name a few. They're extremely diverse.

Peter did not offer concessions and it wouldn't have mattered cause Charles didn't want land or money, he wanted to dethrone Peter and place a sweden friendly regent on the Russian throne.

Charles XII is one of my favourite kings. The fact that he stood by his men at all times, turning unfavourable odds into favourable, was and will forever be admirable. Even though he was stubborn and at times a bit too heroic he has certainly gone down as one of the best generals in history as well as an increadibly unique historical character.

'I just wanna point out a mistake in this video. The Swedish Empire wasn´t at it´s peak during the reign of Charles XII, this was actually the case during the reign of his grandfather Charles X Gustav where Sweden reached it´s greatest extent. Admittedly this was just to last for a short 2 year period between 1658-1660. The counties in question were Bornholm (Denmark) and Trondheim (Norway) both which was granted to Sweden after the peace at Roskilde in 1658, but both were lost after the treaty of Copenhagen in 1660. These are just minor details and I love all of your work!
Maximum geographical extent isn't the same as peak. For instance, the Roman Empire's best years didn't have all the territories it had at its maximum extent. Lines on a map don't adequately represent influence within all areas of those lines.

The Roskilde Treaty did split Norway in halves, but the both the Trönder and Bornholmer revolted, so it would have been hard to keep those counties, even if Sweden hadn't lost in 1660. Charles X wanted Denmark to cease to exist. He planned to annex all Danish islands and give Jutland to Spain. Then all Danes should have been sent as slaves to the Spanish colonies in America and replaced by Swedes and Spaniards. Spain already had a foothold in the Netherlands at this time, so it wasn't that unrealistic. But the plan failed, since the king died and Denmark got support from England.
It was the will of the Sultan Murad I that his descendants should never unmount from their horses, meaning that they must keep riding, keep fighting, keep leading in front and never fall into palace comfort. Ahmed III was one of the worst Ottoman Sultans in that respect. You can see that the Ottomans were still the superpower of that era, thanks to the preceding excellent administrations, but corruption and non-stop machinations in the court, including grandviziers, sultan's mother and even the sultan himself, made it sure the Ottomans had lost their gust of the past 16th and 17th century.
The Ottomans were well established up until the 1740-1768 where they started to lag behind economically,militarily and scientifically and coincidentially it was around when the Industrial Revolution starts to kick in during the 1750s.
As a Turk, I am ashamed of this situation. The war was won much more precisely than described here. Even a Swedish could see it better than a Turkish. And he tried to explain this situation to the Sultan. He was not allowed to tell. He developed tactics to explain. In other words, Turks have given foreigners many capitulations throughout their history. The sultan offered the man money, the man did not accept it. Look at that dignified stance. Charles spent the following years in exile in the Ottoman Empire before returning to lead an assault on Norway, trying to evict the Danish king from the war once more in order to aim all his forces at the Russians. Two campaigns met with frustration and ultimate failure, concluding with his death at the Siege of Fredriksten in 1718.

Agreed. In the 1711 Turkish-Russian war(Pruth Campaign ), the greatest Russian Tsar, Peter the Great, was caught by the Turks. Sultan Ahmed III. wanted Peter to be killed and his head brought to Constantinople, but the Grand Vizier Mehmed made a deal with Russian Tsar Peter and released her. Grand Vizier Mehmed was later killed by the Sultan. it was one of the greatest mistakes of the Ottomans. Because Peter later made Russia the strongest eastern European country. the Great
I do not think that a massive gain was granted.... Probably a humiliating peace and the captivity of a Christian ruler would have triggered the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Austria to attack on multiple fronts the Ottomans, as both of them were interested in territorial concessions and in weakening both the Turkish and the Swedish armies. From Ottoman perspective, it was reasonable to have a little gain immediately, instead of an uncertain bigger gain in the future.
Sweden is that dude who drops into your house, overstays their welcome and refuses to leave. You ask him to nicely leave and he says no, you give him a ton of money to leave and he still says no. Finally you set the dogs on him... I love diplomacy.

Not really, he wasn't that far from victory. He was extremely unlucky in the winter of that year which seriously crippled his army, he also could have settled for a less ambitious peace treaty with the Russians but he was determined to get a complete victory.

I just wanted to list a few of the victories this great general achevied in his early life (thus not counting the stuff where he was older than 27). -Narva - 4:1, done by Charles XII as an 18 year old boy -Duna 1701 - 3:1 across a defended river held by the enemy -Pultusk 1703 - 500 man less than the enemy -Punitz 1704 - 4:3 swedish cavalry led by Charles against saxon infantry -Grodno 1706 - enemy had 7,000 more men -Grodno 1708 - 10:1 ratio, led by the king -Krosnokutskt 1709 - 400 vs 7,000, again by the king. It's not that he couldn't win battles. It's just that the enemy never called for any reasonable peace demands, and that they managed to summon the coldest winter in 500 years. Really goes to show, no matter how good you can fight, luck can and will win wars for you.

Napoleon should have looked to charles campaign to Moscow to realise that it was a bad idea . On another point I can’t wait to see more ottoman videos to see how the empire developed from the post suleyman era to this more european esque era in the early 18th century where they was much more open communication with europe . As a Finnish military historian I can also tell you with certainty that there's several errors in the currently on-going Winter War series, errors that are easy to spot with a bit of research, even from just English sources. I know making these videos must be a huge ordeal and some mistakes are bound to slip through the cracks, but I was a little surprised at this one, when the source can be checked simply by Googling the quote. The quoted "Swedish veteran named Roos" is in reality the (main?) character "Richard Roos" in the aforementioned fictional book by Franz Hoffmann. I have noticed this channel releases several videos a week, all from wildly different conflicts. I wonder if this sort of "video production on a conveyor belt" is a bit too harsh on the research time that the topics they cover truly deserve.

The great northern war was far more interesting leading up to Poltava, a war fought on many fronts showing the prowess of the swedish military. I think you missed out on many facinating encounters, like Rehnskiöld's double envelopment at Fraustadt or the crossing of the Düna. Also, you should make a video on the second northern war, with Charles grandfather. The polish still sing of this war and it's destruction to this day in their national anthem. For a King who handled Russia, Poland-Lithuania, Denmark-Norway and Great Birtain like that, I believe you need to be very mature to do it, rather than spoiled. I would LOVE to see you trying to accomplish 5% of what that ' spoiled kid ' has accomplished in his short life....
One can only wonder how different the course of history would have been if the grand vizier took Peter and Catherine prisoner at Prut instead of making a peace treaty, especially since Peter was known for transforming Russia into a major power that would later rival and defeat Ottoman Empire in numerous wars.
Wow, thank you, I had no idea of Charles´continuing trying to relaunch his campaign against Russia with Ottoman troops, and of his stay in Moldava. I read a very good bio of Peter the Great, and all I learned in of what happened after the battle of Poltlava was Charles going to the Porte and then leaving for his German territory on horseback after some time as the Sultan's guest. So, thanks again for this great snapshot of this moment in history!

It is often understated how significant the Ottoman victory over Russia at Azov was. Had they starved him out and had the Tsar imprisoned, Peter the great would not have ascended the throne for a while, which would have allowed other European powers to make preparations against Russia.

Without Peter the Great, the modernisation of Russia likely would been reversed or greatly delayed, as there were many Russian nobles opposed to his reforms as well as his son Alexei. If he had been taken prisoner and taken to Constantinople, his rivals may well have deposed him and placed the traditionalist Alexei as Tsar. Losing an entire army would have been a devastating blow as well, leaving the country vulnurable to invasion. Without a strong, modernized Russia, world history would have been very different. Indeed it seems to Ottomans missed their chance to decapitate their greatest rival.

Charles XII is one of my favourite kings. The fact that he stood by his men at all times, turning unfavourable odds into favourable, was and will forever be admirable. Even though he was stubborn and at times a bit too heroic he has certainly gone down as one of the best generals in history as well as an increadibly unique historical character.

Sorry Sweden! As a Turk, it's saddens me, that my forefathers didn't support your king Charles XII against Russia. He was truly the Lion of the North. Sincere guy with honor. Imagine together we could have nailed the Russian bear and split Russian empire together. Moscow and North to the Swedes and the lands south of it to the Turks. Aaaah :) Side note: king Gustav 4th wanted financial aid to ally them with the Ottomans against The Russian Empire. The Turks paid heavily to get the Swedes against the Russians. But in the end the Swedes made peace agreement with Russians. Another window of opportunity to wipe out the Russian bear was gone. This time the Swedes are to blame for this.

'I just wanna point out a mistake in this video. The Swedish Empire wasn´t at it´s peak during the reign of Charles XII, this was actually the case during the reign of his grandfather Charles X Gustav where Sweden reached it´s greatest extent. Admittedly this was just to last for a short 2 year period between 1658-1660. The counties in question were Bornholm (Denmark) and Trondheim (Norway) both which was granted to Sweden after the peace at Roskilde in 1658, but both were lost after the treaty of Copenhagen in 1660. These are just minor details and I love all of your work!
Maximum geographical extent isn't the same as peak. For instance, the Roman Empire's best years didn't have all the territories it had at its maximum extent. Lines on a map don't adequately represent influence within all areas of those lines.
@@R3GARnator I think Sweden was at its strongest between 1660 and 1700. The Roskilde Treaty did split Norway in halves, but the both the Trönder and Bornholmer revolted, so it would have been hard to keep those counties, even if Sweden hadn't lost in 1660. Charles X wanted Denmark to cease to exist. He planned to annex all Danish islands and give Jutland to Spain. Then all Danes should have been sent as slaves to the Spanish colonies in America and replaced by Swedes and Spaniards. Spain already had a foothold in the Netherlands at this time, so it wasn't that unrealistic. But the plan failed, since the king died and Denmark got support from England.

It was the will of the Sultan Murad I that his descendants should never unmount from their horses, meaning that they must keep riding, keep fighting, keep leading in front and never fall into palace comfort. Ahmed III was one of the worst Ottoman Sultans in that respect. You can see that the Ottomans were still the superpower of that era, thanks to the preceding excellent administrations, but corruption and non-stop machinations in the court, including grandviziers, sultan's mother and even the sultan himself, made it sure the Ottomans had lost their gust of the past 16th and 17th century.
The Ottomans were well established up until the 1740-1768 where they started to lag behind economically,militarily and scientifically and coincidentially it was around when the Industrial Revolution starts to kick in during the 1750s.
As a Turk, I am ashamed of this situation. The war was won much more precisely than described here. Even a Swedish could see it better than a Turkish. And he tried to explain this situation to the Sultan. He was not allowed to tell. He developed tactics to explain. In other words, Turks have given foreigners many capitulations throughout their history. The sultan offered the man money, the man did not accept it. Look at that dignified stance.
I think that the Demirbaş followed this situation in astonishment and thought: there is something wrong here, I shouldn't leave leaving the situation like this. The war, which will destroy a great empire, turns into defeat due to bribery. Here is the typical 1700 to 1900 BC Ottoman period, the situation is very significant, A rare event that will set an example for the causes of the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.

I do not think that a massive gain was granted.... Probably a humiliating peace and the captivity of a Christian ruler would have triggered the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Austria to attack on multiple fronts the Ottomans, as both of them were interested in territorial concessions and in weakening both the Turkish and the Swedish armies.
From Ottoman perspective, it was reasonable to have a little gain immediately, instead of an uncertain bigger gain in the future.

It is a great example of how the ottoman court in 18th century, massive army, power etc but lots of bribery around, even Charles as a foreigner understood something wrong but Sultan didn't.
The Grand Vizier mainly the corrupted ones were replaced as shown in the video.The Sultan wasn't gullible and the ottomans was well off until 1783.

This guy seems like the Austrian General Von Hotzendorf if he could win battles. High energy, enthusiastic and grand dreams, but completely unrealistic in how to achieve them.
Not really, he wasn't that far from victory.
He was extremely unlucky in the winter of that year which seriously crippled his army, he also could have settled for a less ambitious peace treaty with the Russians but he was determined to get a complete victory.
*Could* have won battles? That just triggered me, ngl. I just wanted to list a few of the victories this great general achevied in his early life (thus not counting the stuff where he was older than 27).
-Narva - 4:1, done by Charles XII as an 18 year old boy
-Duna 1701 - 3:1 across a defended river held by the enemy
-Pultusk 1703 - 500 man less than the enemy
-Punitz 1704 - 4:3 swedish cavalry led by Charles against saxon infantry
-Grodno 1706 - enemy had 7,000 more men
-Grodno 1708 - 10:1 ratio, led by the king
-Krosnokutskt 1709 - 400 vs 7,000, again by the king.
It's not that he couldn't win battles. It's just that the enemy never called for any reasonable peace demands, and that they managed to summon the coldest winter in 500 years. Really goes to show, no matter how good you can fight, luck can and will win wars for you.

Napoleon should have looked to charles campaign to Moscow to realise that it was a bad idea . On another point I can’t wait to see more ottoman videos to see how the empire developed from the post suleyman era to this more european esque era in the early 18th century where they was much more open communication with europe . Anyway One can only imagine what charles would have done with a 200 k ottoman army at his back ...

My ancestors was a carolean and he accompanied King Charles in Bender and he fought in Poltava. It was lucky he survived everything.

As a Finnish military historian I can also tell you with certainty that there's several errors in the currently on-going Winter War series, errors that are easy to spot with a bit of research, even from just English sources. I know making these videos must be a huge ordeal and some mistakes are bound to slip through the cracks, but I was a little surprised at this one, when the source can be checked simply by Googling the quote. The quoted "Swedish veteran named Roos" is in reality the (main?) character "Richard Roos" in the aforementioned fictional book by Franz Hoffmann.
I have noticed this channel releases several videos a week, all from wildly different conflicts. I wonder if this sort of "video production on a conveyor belt" is a bit too harsh on the research time that the topics they cover truly deserve.

The great northern war was far more interesting leading up to Poltava, a war fought on many fronts showing the prowess of the swedish military. I think you missed out on many facinating encounters, like Rehnskiöld's double envelopment at Fraustadt or the crossing of the Düna.
Also, you should make a video on the second northern war, with Charles grandfather. The polish still sing of this war and it's destruction to this day in their national anthem.

Spoiled ? Charles XII was the greatest King of Sweeden of all time ! Not his fault that unlike Peter and Augustus he liked to get his hand dirty and fight like a proper solider. Hell, he even got killed whilst he was acting a solider inspecting engineers in a campaign in Norway. For a King who handled Russia, Poland-Lithuania, Denmark-Norway and Great Birtain like that, I believe you need to be very mature to do it, rather than spoiled. Wow, thank you, I had no idea of Charles´continuing trying to relaunch his campaign against Russia with Ottoman troops, and of his stay in Moldava. I read a very good bio of Peter the Great, and all I learned in of what happened after the battle of Poltlava was Charles going to the Porte and then leaving for his German territory on horseback after some time as the Sultan's guest. So, thanks again for this great snapshot of this moment in history!
